Katchoo had felt justified in blowing most of her last paycheck on food for this party, because this was a girl who would eat half-raw macaroni and cheese if left to her own devices and you really didn't want her cooking. It helped to have a radio cohost who ran the diner ~~and could be shamelessly self-modded~~ and had the weirdest mushy soft spot for her and Francine, so she'd been able to call in favors from Lacey, who'd supplied trays of sandwiches, salads, a couple of fancy-looking pasta dishes, and a large chocolate and raspberry mousse cake.

She'd thought setting up for the party would be a lot harder, but . . . eh, this wasn't the kind of party that you had just to see how many high-profile politicians you could get blackmail material on in one night. Simple enough. And as far as Katchoo was concerned, a hell of a lot more important.

The music for the night was a combination of Griffin Silver and the Beatles, there was extra room on the tables for food in case anyone else felt like bringing stuff, Clocky made occasional tweeting circuits of the room, and the ball pit was there for you if you needed it.

And Katchoo was even around, her usual diffident expression dialed down half a notch. The things we do for love, man.

. . . and then a bed of plastic squirt flowers sprang up in one corner of the room near the ballpit. Sigh. Happy frikkin' April Fool's.

"Yeah? I think I thought you guys came here together, or ... weren't you at her last high school?" Dinah could've sworn Francine mentioned that, some class they'd been in together.

"She got here before I did," Katchoo answered, running a hand through her hopeless tangle of hair. "By half the summer. It was months for her, but two years for me. Frikkin' Fandom."

Dinah set out the cups, and gave Katchoo a glance of total sympathy for that one. "Yeah. I hear that." She made a face, thinking of Jak. "But at least you guys were still friends, even after two years for you, right?" She paused, and blinked at Katchoo. "Wait, so you're, what? Nineteen? Twenty?"

"I was twenty in November," Katchoo answered neutrally; she wasn't big on celebrating her birthday. "You might be about the only person besides Francine and maybe the guys who knows that now."

"Oh." Dinah cut her a glance, setting out napkins and food, and thought about that a bit. No wonder Katchoo didn't have a lot of patience for the rest of the students; she was older, had quit high school and come back, she guessed. And it was probably off-base, but she felt obscurely... trusted? That Katchoo had told her that. She wasn't going to mention that, but she did say, "You must be the person most looking forward to getting out of here, then."

"Nah." Katchoo thought Arthur had that pretty well wrapped up, and as much as she complained, where the hell else was she going to go? That was still pretty up in the air. "I don't love it, but there are worse places to be."

Like the one she'd escaped.

"True." Dinah worried about Karla after Graduation in another few years, for a start. Plus a few other people. "But I'm not going to miss the concussions. Just about everything else, but..." Like she'd be getting fewer of those in New Gotham.

Katchoo snorted, faintly amused. "Talk to Tiny Creepy Kid about that. I think that's her specialty, getting knocked on the head." She idly toyed with the stray end of a streamer. "I just know wherever she goes is where I'll be."

An "aawwwww" would get her kicked, wouldn't it?

"Awwwwwww."

Totally worth it if she was kicked!

Was that an almost friendly smile that Katchoo leveled at her? Mingled with a good dose of 'rargh,' yes. "Bite me, bouncy cheerful hellspawn."

Snickering, Dinah bounced the rest of the food to the table, and said, "Naaaah. I'll leave that to Francine, if she wants to nibble."

"And we won't be telling you about it," Katchoo replied, smirking. With just a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny hint of squee in the words. Hush.
