Francine's Birthday Party, Sixth Floor Common Room, Thursday Late Afternoon/Evening

Katchoo had felt justified in blowing most of her last paycheck on food for this party, because this was a girl who would eat half-raw macaroni and cheese if left to her own devices and you really didn't want her cooking. It helped to have a radio cohost who ran the diner and could be shamelessly self-modded and had the weirdest mushy soft spot for her and Francine, so she'd been able to call in favors from Lacey, who'd supplied trays of sandwiches, salads, a couple of fancy-looking pasta dishes, and a large chocolate and raspberry mousse cake.

She'd thought setting up for the party would be a lot harder, but . . . eh, this wasn't the kind of party that you had just to see how many high-profile politicians you could get blackmail material on in one night. Simple enough. And as far as Katchoo was concerned, a hell of a lot more important.

The music for the night was a combination of Griffin Silver and the Beatles, there was extra room on the tables for food in case anyone else felt like bringing stuff, Clocky made occasional tweeting circuits of the room, and the ball pit was there for you if you needed it.

And Katchoo was even around, her usual diffident expression dialed down half a notch. The things we do for love, man.

. . . and then a bed of plastic squirt flowers sprang up in one corner of the room near the ballpit. Sigh. Happy frikkin' April Fool's.

...Close enough, though it kind of sounded like she was going to help somebody deliver a calf.

"Thanks!" Francine grinned widely. "Now I'm old enough to.... do the stuff I've already been doing on this island anyway."

"I still think it is a strange way to decide one is adult," Firekeeper admitted, with a bit of a confused headshake.

"Turning eighteen?" Francine nodded. "I don't know why they picked that age. Merlin says people get married younger than that where he's from."

Firekeeper nodded. "My friend Elise were seventeen when Sapphire's brother propose," she informed Francine. Not that that engagement had lasted, exactly, but it had happened.

Francine remembered that name. "Wait, isn't she going to have a baby with your friend Doc? Is that Sapphire's brother?"

Firekeeper made a face. "No! Doc is much better match. Jet only proposed because he thinked it make their chances of being named King Tedric's heir greater." Politics still confused her a little, to be honest.

Francine would proudly join that club. Though she had some rudimentary ideas of royal succession, they all pretty much went 'and then someday Arthur will be king and Camelot won't suck' so she had to ask, "Does the king not have any kids of his own?"

"Did have," she admitted. "They all die, though. Earl Kestrel were looking to see if Prince Barden still live when he find me, instead."

Firekeeper nodded. "Blysse were same age as me, so he gived me that name, and hope it make others think she is me. I is her?" she frowned, unsure of how to phrase that.

"You were her?" Francine wasn't sure entirely either, especially since a little girl named Tamara made her pretty sure that none of those conjugations was true. "It's hard to think of you as anything but Firekeeper anymore, though," she said. "It goes better with Blind Seer, anyway."
