Katchoo had felt justified in blowing most of her last paycheck on food for this party, because this was a girl who would eat half-raw macaroni and cheese if left to her own devices and you really didn't want her cooking. It helped to have a radio cohost who ran the diner ~~and could be shamelessly self-modded~~ and had the weirdest mushy soft spot for her and Francine, so she'd been able to call in favors from Lacey, who'd supplied trays of sandwiches, salads, a couple of fancy-looking pasta dishes, and a large chocolate and raspberry mousse cake.

She'd thought setting up for the party would be a lot harder, but . . . eh, this wasn't the kind of party that you had just to see how many high-profile politicians you could get blackmail material on in one night. Simple enough. And as far as Katchoo was concerned, a hell of a lot more important.

The music for the night was a combination of Griffin Silver and the Beatles, there was extra room on the tables for food in case anyone else felt like bringing stuff, Clocky made occasional tweeting circuits of the room, and the ball pit was there for you if you needed it.

And Katchoo was even around, her usual diffident expression dialed down half a notch. The things we do for love, man.

. . . and then a bed of plastic squirt flowers sprang up in one corner of the room near the ballpit. Sigh. Happy frikkin' April Fool's.

"Really?" Azula asked, welcoming the distraction. "What are you planning for your birthday? I can bring a Fire Nation cake, its sweet and spicy."

"Ooo, not sure yet." Dinah looked torn. "Last year, I had a cake for everyone to share. That sounds good, a Fire Nation cake." She grinned. "Ask me the week before. If I'm *really* lucky, Helena will be bringing me a present I've wanted forever that week."

"What present would this be? A dagger?"

Azula's ideas for a perfect gift were a little... different from other people's ideas of a perfect gift.

"Um. My own steed. Sort of." Dinah blinked, and said diplomatically, "Not that knives aren't cool. Arthur's teaching me how to throw them now."

"That's an acceptable gift too," she conceded then snorted. "Oh, Arthur's teaching you, is he?"

"Yup," Dinah said, a little cautiously. "Well. I wanted to learn something new. The sword work is cool, but knives might be more useful back home, so..." She shrugged and said, "I'm not very good at it yet. Unless I cheat and use the telekinesis."

"Don't," Azula said her tone serious. "You will only harm yourself if you do. Learning through hardwork will only make you better. Cheat in battle but never when you're learning a skill."

Dinah's face went solemn, and she realized that some things, Azula just would *not* compromise on. "I figured. But yeah. It's-- good to hear you say that." Her mouth quirked sideways. "When I get better, maybe you can take a look at how well I'm doing."

"Good," she nodded once and then smirked. "Let's see how good you can get, my-- my brother's fiancee is an expert on knives let us see if you can usurp her place."

"Oooo, a challenge," Dinah said, daring to tease her. "Right. Now I'm motivated to beat out Zuzu's sweetie pie. Much. More. Practice."

Azula almost laughed. The very image of Mai, the Fire Nation's very own deadpan snarker as a 'sweetie pie'.

"Yes, I would like to see how you would fare with Mai," then in her own teasing way, added, "but perhaps you need a decade's worth of practice to get near her level."

"Shucks. Story of my life," Dinah said in resignation. "By the time I'm caught up, everyone will be past-masters. Whatever comes after that." She shrugged, then grinned. "Still. Fun to try to get better anyway." She tilted her head. "What's the next thing you're going to learn?"

"Momoko seems to think I lack education in the 'sweets' department," she said in a dry tone. "And some people have mentioned I might need a little schooling when it comes to interacting with commoners."

Dinah snorted into her drink, and then giggled. "Gee, I wonder how they ever got that idea?" Heh. "But you should start with the cookies over there. I thought you knew from cake, though...?"

"Apparently not knowing marshmallows is a critical failure in my knowledge about pastries," she said tone still very dry.

"Ah!" Dinah drew a mock shocked breath, eyes wide. "Ohhh noooes. She's right! You need more sugar, stat!"

"Yes, because what I need is more sugar," she smirked then after snatching a cookie to taste. "That would solve all my problems."
