Behind the Dorms, Tuesday After Classes

"This week, I'd like to consider our shoreline again," Arthur began. "We mapped them last year - you can find copies of the maps we've made in the usual place." Being at the end of the table with the sandwiches. "There might come a time where we find ourselves beaten back to the very edges of our island. In order to cope with this eventuality, we need to know which parts are defensible, and how."

He nodded towards the preserve behind him. "Be it the cliffs of the preserve, or the beaches, or the docks," he continued, "The water is of course a natural obstruction. If we are dealing with a landborne attack, it will mean having a line we don't need to pay attention to - but also little chance of escape. Barring those of us who can walk on water."

Not meant as a joke here, no.

"If they're coming in from water or the sky, different strategies might be needed. I suggest you all pair up and head to different areas on our shoreline. We can compare strategies next week, or earlier for those of you who'd like to reconvene ahead of time."

That would be that.

[[ wait for the ocd up and open! ]]

Okay, she had to admit?

Ino was feeling kinda crappy today thanks to loss-of-children and all the thoughts that brought along.

The mention of walking on water and the fact that her maps were being used, though, was going to get Arthur a bit of a grin. Shut up, she liked being useful.

Ino shifted from foot to foot almost impatiently. She had some ideas for what she'd do but she wanted to hear what other had in mind.

But for that she needed a partner!

“Oh fearless leader,” she chirped, wandering over to him. It should be noted that Ino did not particularly feel like chirping but that she was bound and determined to do so anyway. “How much time will you spend scouting the area?”

She was curious. She was also a bit of a brat. Ino couldn’t help that—or, well, she didn’t want to. Shush.

Her lips twitched.

“So an hour?” she teased, arms behind her back, eyes wide and amused. “Maybe two? Afternoon turns to evening pretty soon, you know.”

“Can’t it be both?” she wondered. “I swear I’ll refrain from bringing up the events of the weekend, even, if you’d prefer that.”

Ino preferred that. Her feelings on Angeal and Inori were rather mixed and frankly uncomfortable.

“Not point,” she said agreeably. “Considering it’s a year off for me to even have the chance of them coming back and probably a lot further away for you, yeah?”

Ino? Didn’t really care.

She fidgeted, casting a glance at him that was a bit dubious. “You talked much to Zack lately?”

“If you mean that weekend where everyone wasn’t themselves...” she said, with great dignity, “then no.”

A pause.

“Not really. Hold that thought—that one might come back and make a liar of me. But no, this is new and shiny trauma.” Her words were flippant, but her expression was far less so.

“What do you know ‘bout his home?” she asked, head tilting. “’Bout who all is important to him and the current situation?”

She had to ask. Ino knew too much about Zack’s world from two different times. It all mixed together and she knew she had to be careful.

“His mentor’s dead,” she said bluntly.

Then added: “Zack killed him.”

Mat tended to prefer long walks on beaches for something other than tactical purposes, but anything that was vaguely distracting today was a good thing.

Here she paused, not sure of how much she could say.

“There were experiments... Angeal—Zack’s mentor—was one of the people who they’d been done to without his knowledge. It turned him into a monster and he... couldn’t stabilize himself as who he was rather than... what he was becoming.”

Ino met his eyes.

“He wanted to die. He asked for it. When Zack said no, he pushed the issue until Zack had no choice; he turned himself into a monster, of his own will, so Zack would have to kill him. The sword Zack carries was his.”

Bigger and far heavier than the one he’d been using a few weeks ago. And she thought that was safe enough. It left out more than it said and mentioned nothing of anything but Angeal.

“Cruel, yes,” Ino replied seriously. “But I don’t think it was dishonourable. Honour was always important to Angeal.”

She only had to hear Zack talk about him to know that.

“He chose a way to die that he thought was fitting for the monster he’d become and for the human he’d been. He decided it and he trusted Zack would do it. In its own way... that’s an honour. That’s a trust and that’s faith in someone he cared about. It’s cruel too. It can be all of that.”

Ino had a different way of looking at things, yes. And she would never tell Zack her take on why Angeal had had him do it.

“Thank you,” she added, “I thought you’d want to know.” Zack was one of his men, after all. “You’ll have to catch him outside, though.”
