"This week, I'd like to consider our shoreline again," Arthur began. "We mapped them last year - you can find copies of the maps we've made in the usual place." Being at the end of the table with the sandwiches. "There might come a time where we find ourselves beaten back to the very edges of our island. In order to cope with this eventuality, we need to know which parts are defensible, and how."

He nodded towards the preserve behind him. "Be it the cliffs of the preserve, or the beaches, or the docks," he continued, "The water is of course a natural obstruction. If we are dealing with a landborne attack, it will mean having a line we don't need to pay attention to - but also little chance of escape. Barring those of us who can walk on water."

Not meant as a joke here, no.

"If they're coming in from water or the sky, different strategies might be needed. I suggest you all pair up and head to different areas on our shoreline. We can compare strategies next week, or earlier for those of you who'd like to reconvene ahead of time."

That would be that.

Ino was feeling kinda crappy today thanks to loss-of-children and all the thoughts that brought along.

The mention of walking on water and the fact that her maps were being used, though, was going to get Arthur a bit of a grin. Shut up, she liked being useful.

Mat tended to prefer long walks on beaches for something other than tactical purposes, but anything that was vaguely distracting today was a good thing.

Yay sandwiches, maps, distraction. Dinah had way too much to think about today, so having all this to deal with was good.

Water-walking might be a way to start.

Kennedy took three or four sandwiches and retreated to a quiet spot to look over one of the maps-- it was boring work, honestly, not really up her alley, but this morning's call with her Watcher had actually been a lecture on just this sort of thing.

If she was a little distracted and thoughtful today, it didn't have so much to do with the task at hand, or with missing the kids as it did with a few things they'd said and done that prompted thinky sorts of thoughts. Like that thing Des had done with the ice, for one. And other... stuff. Yeah.

Tara normally didn't go anywhere near reserve meetings, and she was halfway expected to be kicked out of this one. But it had the advantage of being a place where she knew she could find Kennedy, so --

"Hi," she said once Arthur was done talking, so very fake casual. "So, do you guys go for walks on the beach a lot?"

"Sometimes we climb the Rocky Bits," Kennedy offered jokingly after a moment of surprise at seeing Tara here. "He's in super strategy mode again. Something up, babe?"

She figured something had to be for Tara to risk Arthur-glareyface.

Arthur and Tara were .... kind of in-laws, now, through some bizarre conglomeration of alternate universes. His glare held no power over her.

Well. Not much.

"Not in particular?" she frowned. "Just -- I was pretty busy with Rosemary last two days. Wanted to see how you did with your two."

"Oh, God," Kennedy replied, laughing. "Those two wore me out. Birgitte got into it with this scary other kid of Mat's and tried to make a cross-dimensional playdate with one of Dinah's kids, and I'm pretty sure Des homed in on everything sugary on the island ever, and God... am I that exhausting to deal with?"

She paused, then added quickly, "Don't get me wrong, they were great kids and I'm not really complaining-- much, even though Birgitte can out-brat even me and that's saying something-- but I'm glad that's some other reality, not mine."

There was a tiny, tiny bit of wistfulness there. Hush.

Ino shifted from foot to foot almost impatiently. She had some ideas for what she'd do but she wanted to hear what other had in mind.

But for that she needed a partner!

Arthur was in his usual location, or close to it - he was actually scanning Ino's maps a bit, carefully memorizing them yet again.

“Oh fearless leader,” she chirped, wandering over to him. It should be noted that Ino did not particularly feel like chirping but that she was bound and determined to do so anyway. “How much time will you spend scouting the area?”

She was curious. She was also a bit of a brat. Ino couldn’t help that—or, well, she didn’t want to. Shush.

“So an hour?” she teased, arms behind her back, eyes wide and amused. “Maybe two? Afternoon turns to evening pretty soon, you know.”

It took Zack a moment to shake himself out of the haze that he'd managed to work himself into. Haze was easy. Haze meant that he wasn't dwelling on things. But once he managed to come back to the light, so to speak, he even managed to offer Arthur a bit of a smile and a nod.

"Sure," he replied. "What can I do for you?"
