The Roof, Saturday Afternoon

The roof, and the open air, was peaceful as Hinata slipped over to sit on the edge of the roof and just… enjoy the day.

There were things to be done, of course, but there were always things to be done and a little while to indulge in nothing more than fresh air and her thoughts would harm absolutely no one. Not even herself though she had to banish the thoughts of what her father would say of the sloth Fandom had induced in her.

She had a book with her, Hinata nearly always did, but for the moment... well, just watching over the roof and the area below was enough for her.

Hoshi probably had similar thoughts as she headed up to the roof. Fresh air was a must for someone as claustrophobic as she was, and recent events had her wondering what her family would say if she invited them to attend graduation.

"Hello Hinata!" she said, grinning as she spotted the other girl. "Enjoying the weather? It's nice when things warm up a bit after a long winter."

"Hoshi! Hello!" she said, smiling over her shoulder. "Have you come to do the same? It's so nice up here now that it's warmer. The snow is rather depressing."

"Yeah, I'm definitely not fond of snow," said Hoshi, looking out at the view. "Though I almost wouldn't mind being back in the middle of winter, because that would mean that graduation would be a long way off."

"That is depressing as well," she sighed, and offered her friend a smile. "Did you ever open your envelope?"

"I did, finally! Or rather, Joan took it from me and opened it because I was dragging my feet. I'm going to be going to a new university in Brazil in my time period," said Hoshi, smiling. "It should be really interesting, because they have a really good linguistics program that focuses on reviving dead languages."

"Dead languages..." she grinned a bit at that. "And then you can use a portal to go to places and times where they aren't dead and see how well you've learnt them, hmmm? And congratulations! I'm so happy for you!"

"Thanks," said Hoshi, smiling. "I know I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling by portal, but I doubt it will be for language practice. Somehow, Hurley and I waited until right before graduation to start dating. I get the feeling we'll be going back and forth by portal to see each other."

"You're dating?" she smiled slowly, pleased to hear that. "I'm glad for the both of you even if your timing could have been better--at least you both have happiness to take out of Fandom if th-that makes sense? I always feel bad for those left behind here."

"In a sense, we have been dating for a while," said Hoshi with a chuckle. "I mean, Hurley and I went to all the dances together and spent most of spring break together. It just didn't occur to me that he was ready to move on from Penelope until he kissed me. I just hope we're actually taking happiness out of Fandom and not leaving it behind."

"You only leave behind what you wish to," she said thoughtfully. "Nothing can take from you what you do not wish to have taken. Things can ch-change but what you had can't be changed."

"That's true. I know I certainly won't end any relationships after leaving the island," said Hoshi. "Which reminds me, I should warn you that I'll be writing every week, or as often as possible. I'll be expecting to get lots of replies."

"I shall send them," she promised, "though you will likely be bored. My life is quiet--perhaps I'll listen more to radio and send the gossip your way."

"I will be happy for any sort of news," said Hoshi, smiling. "Just knowing that my friends are still out there will be enough for me. I am a little wary of heading to a place where I don't know anyone."

"That's true," she admitted, gazing out off the roof. "It is never a fine thing to be all along even if it's in a place of your choosing. I am sure you will make friends quickly though."

"That's true. It should be pretty easy, being surrounded by other linguists wanting to practice their skills," said Hoshi, smiling. "How about you? How is the new roommate working out?"

Hinata laughed.

"He flirts," she said lightly. "Like some would breathe, that is how much he flirts now that he has gotten more comfortable with Fandom. He tries it less with me for he knows I am not as comfortable with it and he means it not when it comes to me anyhow." Her eyes crinkled at the corners. "Besides, should he ever become too much, I will simply set Yei on him. She adores his feathers and some times it takes him hours to put them to rights when she's been playing with them."

Hoshi laughed at the mental image. "That is the good thing about having pets around," she said. "Porthos certainly knows when to strategically place himself between people. But a little flirting can't hurt, either."

"If nothing else," she laughed, "I will get better at ignoring it. I do not think I'd care to respond towards the person I live with."

"I can imagine that it could lead to an awkward situation," said Hoshi, thinking of how lucky she was to avoid sharing cramped quarters on a starship. ~~Too bad she had no idea what her mun was planning.~~

~~Muns could be evil that way!~~ Hinata nodded. "If th-things went odd then there would be no place to be alone and think," she elaborated. "And the place where you sleep should be a place that you feel comfortable."

"Well, should your roommate ever make you feel uncomfortable, drop me a line and I'll come back to have a little chat with him," said Hoshi, amused.

"I doubt there'll be a need for it," she laughed. "But I will surely keep you in mind. Have you met him?"

"I don't believe so," said Hoshi. "I'd like to think that I would remember meeting someone who had feathers."

"Some of the time he hides them under a coat," she offered. "Before he came here, he'd hid them almost all the time."

"I don't think I would blame him. If I had feathers, I would spend a lot of time hiding," said Hoshi. "But it sounds like he's come to the right place. After all, this school used to have a unicorn as a student! I don't think anything can top that."

She glanced sideways, amused. "The unicorn was more accepted th-than poor Robin seems to be some days. Especially when he's never been nothing but kind."

"Has someone been mean to Robin?" asked Hoshi, surprised.

"Not lately, I shouldn't think," she said, shaking her head. "But always when the new kids come in you hear about 'that felt frog' and I know there's a few students who've never warmed to him."

"Is that any different from referring to 'the unicorn' whose name I can't seem to remember?" asked Hoshi.

"Attitudes," she said finally, "make the largest difference in it. Unicorns are well loved by many people."

"And people have a much different perception of frogs," said Hoshi, nodding.

"That's it exactly," she replied. "Luckily most people here get over it rather quickly though I can't imagine Robin is too fond of the days when it seems half the school is new."

"It does seem to be a never-ending parade of new students," said Hoshi. "I'm not even sure I got around to meeting everyone from the previous batch that came through!"

"It's difficult to be sure," she laughed softly. "So many of them and then they mix together and no longer can you tell who is new and who is old because all of them are 'Fandom' and are familiar to the sight."

"At least I've gotten better at dealing with large crowds," said Hoshi. "There was a time that the idea of a full classroom would lead me to a panic attack!"

She just shook her head.

"Take that as a measure of growth," she said, smiling. "And r-remember that when a whole new place has you fretting."

"Well, I hope there's nothing to fret about in Brazil, but I'll try to keep that in mind," said Hoshi. She may be singing a different tune after getting a look at tropical insects.

Her grin was tiny.

"Don't wish for perfection," Hinata suggested. "It seems counter-productive but if you set your sights on lower than everything going perfectly it works better. Less of a sh-shock if things go wrong and a joy if they do not."

"I'm sure it won't be perfect, but I don't mind dealing with little issues here and there," said Hoshi. "I already suspect that I'll be living elsewhere and commuting, since they don't really have a lot of housing available."

"Not a lot of housing on campus?" She shook her head. "That seems silly to me, but th-then, this is the only school I've gone to in any world like this."

"They are a fairly new operation and they're in the middle of the rain forest," said Hoshi. "I don't really mind, though. It will be nice to go home at the end of the day and be somewhere completely different."

"As long as there's a home," she said, smiling. "Having a home to go back to makes everything better."

"As far as I'm concerned, Fandom is my home," said Hoshi. "That makes it so much more difficult to leave."

"You'll be able to visit," she said hopefully. "And I will expect you to do so. It's amazing how the time has flown."
