Katchoo being shorter than Francine wasn't new; Katchoo being this much shorter than Francine was.

Also not new: Francine feeding people, where for the time being the term 'people' encompassed her tiny four-year-old roommate-slash-girlfriend, currently plunked down three feet in front of the TV and flipping through the channels because nobody wanted her anywhere near the food preparation. That remote control might get thrown sometime soon.

Why?

"STUPID GOLF! I WANNA WATCH SOMETHING ELSE!"

Because of that.

This could get messy, and that was even before the food.

"That's kind of jerky," Francine agreed. "Did you pull his hair back for it?"

Evil. That was what she was going to Hell for, not thinking of getting her own hair pulled during-- anyway.

Merlin held out for five whole seconds before giving into the pressure. "I didn't know!"

"No one told me!" Merlin insisted. "And he started it!"

"No one has to tell you," Francine said.

Unless you're Francine Peters and then people have to BEAT YOU OVER THE HEAD FOR FIFTEEN TWO YEARS.

"It just is. It's a sign, not something you do on purpose to show somebody you like them. Like, say, bring them cookies or flowers."

She wasn't going to outright lie to a kid even if in two days that kid would be Merlin and think it was vaguely, embarrassingly funny. "Well... it can be."

"He's a jerk! I hate him!" And his pretty hair.

"I think you might feel different about that when you're older." Sigh. Somewhere her ten year old self was kicking Francine in the shins. "Iiii happen to know you're not really very good at hating people."

"But I hate him." With every fiber of his being. "He's rude and mean and hits."

His very very tiny being. "Well, that's not cool. You should--"

Kick him! said Francine's ten year old self. It was a phase. A very short phase, and certain dumbheaded annoying older brothers had generally been the very deserving target.

Tell him that behavior's not very princely came next, and Francine sighed and didn't say that either.

"Try giving him a hug. See how he likes them apples."

"Sounds like he hasn't had enough of those if he's being so mean, doesn't?" Francine crouched down to eye level to impart some slightly more secret adult wisdom. "Besides, he'll probably go eeeeeeeeeew, right? That'd be fun."
