3rd Floor CR, Sunday Afternoon

Playing with wee Tony the afternoon before had been enough to convince Jack he should watch the entire Space Battles trilogy. It seemed to be valuable cultural knowledge ... and apparently it had a princess tied up while wearing a gold bikini in it.

He ordered a few pizzas in case some of the lurking children needed to be fed, took a slice of pizza with extra cheese, and settled onto the couch in the common room as the DVD started to play.

The smell of pizza wafted down to Jonas's room and, before he could stop himself, he found himself peering interestedly into the common room, eyes on Jack and then the food and then back on Jack.

John had a feeling he didn't come here often, but it had been warmer to curl up near here than to stay in the wet grass by the causeway.

Eventually, lingering had turned into exploring, and now here he was, cautiously poking his head into the common room. "H'lo?" he asked, Irish accent thick as anything.

"Hello," Jack told the shy boy. "You can have some pizza, if you want it. It's good."

"Hello," Jack said, not quite placing the accent yet. "You can come in. There's pizza and a movie, if you want it."

"What's a pizza?" John asked, dubiously. Only then did he scoot further into the room, clearly not entirely at ease yet. "And a movie?" Maybe he should go back, find the pup, make another day of it.

"You're bigger than me," Jonas observed but moved into the room and towards the pizza. "Are you old like the Elders?"

"Pizza is tomato sauce and cheese on bread dough. It's Italian," Jack said. "Movies are" -- he gestured at the screen, where the hairy fellow and the pilot were shuttling a ship through the stars. "That. Filmed plays and things. It's not bad."

"Where are you from?" Ireland, by the sound of it, but George Cooper sounded vaguely English and was from another world entirely.

"I'm hardly ever bigger than anyone," Jack said, with a tiny smile. "I'm 18. How old are the elders?"

"Killiney," John said, pottering on towards the couch so at least he'd have somewhere to sit. And he was starving, too. "Me mum says we're but a stone's throw from Dublin, but I'm not sure that's accurate."

He'd thrown stones, after all.

"Thank you," he added, sincerely, and took a slice.

There were good smells coming from this Common Room, and a growing dhampir girl needed food. Lots of food.

Which was why there was a dark-eyed girl with long dark hair flying behind her bursting into the Common Room and looking for the source of the smell. "I'm hungry! "

"Old," Jonas said because he didn't really know. "They were a lot of them. They weren't my friends. I didn't have many of those. We didn't have pizza either."

"I've never understood how far a stone's throw is," Jack said meditatively. "It's like measuring distances 'as the crow flies.' I'm not a crow."

"We didn't have pizza at home for me, either," Jack told him. he hadn't so much had friends his own age, either, but: "Friends ... maybe you can make friends here?"

"Maybe." Jonas didn't sound so sure but he did pick up a piece of pizza that was the size of his head. "I made mud pies with Karla yesterday. She called me her friend."

"We have food!" Jack said, gesturing to the boxes of pizza. "The cost is ... you have to tell me your name."

He was getting bored with the guessing game.

"And I've never thrown a stone that landed in Dublin," John said, completely agreeing with that.

He took a bite off the slice, and gave it a good blink. "Well, that's brilliant."

"If Karla said it, it's probably true," Jack decided. "I'll be your friend, if you don't mind an older one. My name's Jack."

"Hi," Jonas said, giving Jack a wave while balancing the pizza. "I'm Jonas. I live down the hall by myself. That's good, right?"

"Glad you approve." There was a lilt in Jack's voice that threatened to become laughter at the matter-of-fact judgment. "There's plenty more, if you finish that. My name is Jack, by the way."

"I'm Rosemarie Hathaway," she announced. "Are you a grown up or a student?"

"I'm John," he said.

At which point he swallowed.

He had better manners than that. Honest.

"It can be," Jack said. "It can be a little lonely, but it's not like you're all by yourself in the building."

"I graduate in a week," Jack said. "Which does that make me?"

"And my name," he added, "is Jack. Hello, Rosemarie."

He'd never called Rose by her real name in his life. It felt odd.

"No," he said and took a bite of the pizza. "There's a lot of people here. More people than home. I thought I'd been Released at first but no one else knows what that means so I guess not."

Eh, Jack's manners the first time he had pizza probably hadn't been all that much better. Besides, now he'd assembled the Irish thing, the boy's coloring, and the name... and realized this particular batch of island madness seemed to be getting teachers as well as students.

Strange. He gave himself time for that fleeting thought (and a wish Kate was about), then:

"It's nice to meet you. How do you reckon you got here, John?"
