If there was something Dimitri was good at when it came to camping, it was building a decent fire. He could even manage the part about sitting and staring at the fire while his mind churned through all the things he wasn't supposed to be worrying about. It wasn't emo, guardians didn't get emo, it was more an unfortunate awareness.

Clearly this was why God invented campfire food. And why Dimitri had gathered a pile of sticks and a bag of marshmallows.

In a week everything would be different. Back to a normal he didn't want to remember where his heightened senses would be of better use than determining just when his marshmallow was cooked to perfection. And a normal where he wouldn't allow himself to remember where he'd learned this particular method of burning marshmallows.

Dimitri sniffed the air. Acquired tastes be damned, his marshmallow was burnt as hell.

For once Rose didn't feel like being outside - something about the humidity or the thunderstorms or whatever. She didn't feel like being in her room which still felt too empty without Morgana there either so she found herself down in the common room with the music turned up loudly.

Even better, in the refrigerator, there was a tube of chocolate chip dough. Rose eyed it warily. Should it be eaten with a spoon or should she try to make cookies? The oven was on and a cookie sheet was out, but the possibility of ruined cookies was high once they actually went in the oven. Difficult choices for a Monday afternoon.

The television wasn't the reason why Kyle was in the common room. The lighting was better in here and he had a hole in his shoe that he was trying to fix. There was a pair of pants hung over one of the couch arms with a tear in it that needed fixing too, but that would come next.

Or would have, if the guy in the TV didn't start talking to him.

"Hey. Hey buddy. What are you doing?"

At first, he figured it was a show.

"Yeah, kid with the shoes. I'm talking to you!"

Kyle looked up. "Are you talking to me?"

"Maybe. What's it to you?"

"You're a TV. You're not supposed to talk to me."

"Says you. Get a haircut."

"There's nothing wrong with my hair."

"You look like a hippie. Who lets their hair grow that long? Hippies, that's who."

Kyle didn't know what a hippie was, so he just stared for a while, wondering if he should have eaten that cheese at the back of the fridge.

The cabins were starting to get to Alex. Sure, he and Griff often got into fistfights or bitch fights or any other type of fights but he'd only had to deal with one person when he was in a pissy mood. And Griff wasn't one to nag or be nosy so it'd been a copacetic situation.

Now, just to stop feeling like the walls were closing in on him, Alex had bolted out of his cabin and towards the campfire with the intention of smoking enough cigarettes to calm himself down. His mood was just fine, for once, but he was not built for cabin living.

At least the sun was going down and taking the temperature with it. Alex found a spot near the campfire, relaxed back against a log and stretched out, already lighting up a smoke and taking advantage of being outside to indulge in his favorite vice.

See, he already felt better.

Jake had been up early. Freakishly early and he'd taken the time to just run around the preserve, letting his wolf instinct take over to clear his mind. Whether it'd helped was another question as he was now lounging (shirtless) in one of the chairs on the deck with his bare feet propped up on the railing. He was toying with his mobile and finally started typing up a text.

Why did you let the leech come here?

It didn't take long and Jake guessed that Bella must have fallen out of bed.

Bella: Don't call them that. Who are you talking about?
Jake: The tiny one. Alice. Why's she here?
Bella: She isn't there. What are you talking about?

Huh. He stared at the lit up screen, trying to wrap his brain around it. His mobile beeped once more and he automatically pressed to read the next text.

Bella: Can we talk? I miss you.

He wished she wouldn't and he sent her a two letter reply before flipping his mobile off, aware that he was being a jerk. That he was breaking promises, but there was no point in talking. She'd made her choices.

... Now what the hell was that freakish scent that was hanging all around the grounds?

The Second Floor Common Room was no more. The entire area was now a mish-mash of pillows, chairs, blankets and couches. King Edmund had a cardboard crown on his head. He surveyed his creation and nodded in satisfaction.

Now he just needed some subjects to rule! Or, more likely, someone to tell him where to shove his kingliness.

Playing with wee Tony the afternoon before had been enough to convince Jack he should watch the entire Space Battles trilogy. It seemed to be valuable cultural knowledge ... and apparently it had a princess tied up while wearing a gold bikini in it.

He ordered a few pizzas in case some of the lurking children needed to be fed, took a slice of pizza with extra cheese, and settled onto the couch in the common room as the DVD started to play.

Trouble with being six, rather than sixteen, was always going to start with the size problem. Mostly the height problem. Everything good always seemed to be kept just out of reach of small hands, and that included a decent breakfast.

Effy didn't really want to starve, but at the same time, there wasn't exactly anyone around to do it all for her.

So she was going to stand and stare up at the higher cupboards, like maybe she could make them relinquish the food in there with just the power of her mind.

Clearly it wasn't going very well.

The TV was blaring some infomercial about some stupid egg-cracking device because apparently cracking eggs was too hard for people.

Kyle, however, wasn't paying much attention to it. He was very, very wired from too much caffeine today and as such was highly strung and focusing on constructing a small town that looked a lot like Fandom (only with primary colors) with some Lego blocks he'd found in one of the storage closets.

There was room on the floor for plenty more buildings though.

After last weekend, the students of Fandom were probably hoping for a nice, lazy weekend before their week filled with finals. Unfortunately, it could never be easy for people who lived on the island. Where there was once still and quiet, there was now a shrill fire alarm going off, blaring loud enough to even be heard by the deepest of sleeper.

Time to evacuate the dorms, students! And, once everyone started spilling out onto the lawn, they'd find that Fandom had another treat for them. It was warm, that was good, but at some point that night it'd started raining. And it wasn't just ordinary rain. It was raining chocolate syrup and occasionally hailing down marshmallows.

Just another typical late night out on the lawn of the dorms for a fire drill! Hope you brought your umbrella!

Jack had arranged his week to have a three-day weekend for ease of travel back and forth to Baltimore. Of course, now that he wasn't visiting Baltimore so much, it meant he had a long chunk of dead time at the end of every week. It bothered him.

Today, he was trying to fill that time in the common room. There was some rerun on the television -- a wacky doctor show, full of adults acting like children in ways intended to be humorous -- but Jack's attention was on a chess board he'd pried free from the back of the storage shelves. He didn't play chess regularly, but he was decent enough to find it a good mental exercise.

He was playing himself. Right now, the black side seemed to be winning, but Jack saw a way for his white pieces to regain their advantage.

When Alex woke up, he'd been wet and cold. For a second, he thought he'd gotten drunk and passed out outside somewhere but that theory didn't last long. No, he'd quickly discovered there was some fucking thunderstorm happening above his head (and only above his head) that followed him around. As the storm continued, Alex had gotten more angry which had caused hail.

All right, so getting angry hadn't been the best of ideas so now, after forcing himself to calm down and into a mood that was half his regular misery and half mellow. It still meant things like occasional rain showers and a gusty breeze but he'd dressed warmer and stuck a hat on his head to deal with it.

So, that was where he was at now with this strangeness. He'd taken his storm down to the common room and flopped down on one of the couches, feet up and hands behind his head. There was nothing on television but it was on anyway while Alex tried to quietly read a book. Every so often, he checked his phone before going back to his book.

Puck lounged on a sofa, a few boxes of Chinese food before him, as he flipped aimlessly through channels before finally settling on VH1 to watch the Top 100 Worst Songs ever, or something.

He wasn't all that interested, honestly, but it was something to have on in the background while he conducted a little experiment he called, "Does food really attract cute girls people to common rooms?"

Puck being Puck, cooking was out of the question unless everyone wanted something flambé. So he had purposely gotten way more food than he would normally eat (though, you know, it was Chinese food. He'd still eat it in an hour if no one showed.) and set in to wait. Meanwhile, some horrible band with frizzy hair squalled away on the television.

Rose hadn't found herself in Common Rooms all that much recently, but tonight she had a stack of magazines, leftover Easter candy, and Paperboys Newsies on the television.

There was nothing bad about that.  The singing and dancing was completely dorky, but she and Lissa had watched the movie so many times as kids that Rose knew every word.

...okay, that was totally dorky.  But she also had the magazines and was flipping through them to get ideas for Prom dresses.  So what if it was at the end of the week.  There was plenty of time.  Plenty.

Really, it was way too fucking nice to smoke in his room tonight. And honestly, he'd been spending so much time in there, trying to let his bruises heal that he was sick of it. He felt fine, it was warm and he hadn't been up to the roof in awhile. It was the perfect day to do that.

So, after pushing onto the roof, he had a cigarette lit almost immediately before hopping up on the roof's ledge and laying flat on his back, letting the setting sun warm his face. Jack Dawson had found Rose, which was the kind of good that went beyond words like good and well into what might be termed the supercalifragelisticexpialidocious territory. He still wasn't sure about this place -- the time travel stuff was just freaking strange -- but the people seemed like they'd be good people to be around, mostly. Nobody except Cal had been snotty to him. And of course, Rose was there. Nothing could go too bad when Rose was around. Maybe he could get a job and stick around until he saved up enough money to get up to New York.

But all of that was for later.

For now, he sat at one of the tables outside the dormitory building, half-smoked cigarette clenched between his teeth as he enjoyed the sunshine and sketched anything that caught his eye. It wasn't serious artwork, but it helped to pass the time.

It was sunny out, and the cold felt more like nearly spring to Rose than the middle of winter.  And it was sunny out which is what she was really looking for.  Sure, it'd be sunny all next week in the Bahamas and maybe she should spend her time packing instead, but the sun now was the point.

She stretched out on one of deck chairs, feeling the sun on her face.  She was trying not to think about anything.  Definitely not the past few weeks, definitely not wondering how it'd be to go back to living completely nocturnally again once she returned to Lissa, and definitely not what was going to happen with whatever understanding she and Dimitri had reached over the past few days.

Except as happened so often, between not actually doing anything and trying not to think about things, Rose found herself pondering all of them and paying less attention to the warm sun.  She so needed to get up and find a distraction.

Two very simple and important facts: Rose was back in Fandom, and Rose had had a rough trip. The really bad kind of rough trip, it sounded like, from what she'd said on the phone.

Elena didn't know the specifics yet. She didn't need to. Not until Rose wanted to tell her.

In the meantime, there was a roof, and there was alcohol, and there could be talking, or silence, or staring at things. Whatever worked.

Having all of his classes tomorrow didn't mean Bod was going to stay in his room and make it an early night. He'd thought about taking another walk down to the graveyard but decided to save that for later in the week. There was time and Bod knew neither he nor the graveyard was going anywhere for awhile.

So, he'd wandered down the hall, book in hand, to the common room. Yeah, he knew he could have just closed himself in his room to read but the common room was bigger and had food. Food that Bod immediately started scrounging for. It was a little difficult to do considering he was holding his book open with one hand and reaching blindly into the refrigerator with the other. He'd pulled out the box of baking soda three times.

Putting the book down would have been easier, Bod knew, but not as fun. So, he kept trying. That box of baking soda got pulled out two more times.

Just a few hours ago, the flamingoes had given up on their sudden, magical performance, and retreated to their usual perches for the night. The lights had gone out across Fandom Town, and so no one was awake to witness the start of the gentle tinsel snow. Glittering paper floated down, spreading across the fresh snow, coating it in shimmering colours. It was pretty, it was unnoticed, it was...

The fire alarm cut through the air without warning. The fragile peace of Sunday night shattered into tiny little shards, like a lunatic firing bullets into Christmas decorations with utter abandon. The tinsel? Kept falling. The alarm? Would not stop blaring. The firemen? Were out on the town. It was time for the annual 'strange weather' drill, and no man, woman, or angry pseudopod was going to dissuade them from ushering all the students away from the school.

As they rushed into the school, the tinsel kept falling. Enjoy, kids. We hope you stole a coat upon leaving, or you're going to be plenty cold.

Really, he still had no intention of getting into medicine but, somehow, he'd ended up doing so in some other life. That sort of thing tended to pique a guy's curiosity.

After the week he'd had, Alex was pretty glad to be done with it with a week long vacation in the forecast. Of course, he'd had to listen to the guy (who'd been dressed in full lumberjack apparel, complete with ear flaps, for some reason) drone on and on about how cute otters were for the longest time before throwing money at him and leaving with the purchase. The brownie hadn't been any easier to acquire since he'd gotten stopped by some street vendor on the way back who'd waved Miley Cyrus' CD in his face and promised a brownie if he'd give him a soundbyte for some website.

Grabbing a bag of cookies, Rose flopped down on the couch and flipped the tv on. It ended up on a bad ninja movie, but she wasn't so much paying attention as she went over the events of the week again.

[Omg, I am so bored at work. Plz help.]

Alex was finding himself more attracted to the roof than the deck lately, which was a change from earlier in the summer. He couldn't really pinpoint why save for the fact that he liked smoking on the roof. Today was no different. He'd lit up as soon as he'd pushed onto the roof and was halfway done before he'd even sat down on the ledge.

Things felt slow lately, like they were moving in slow motion and it was making him itchy. He really didn't want to think of it as bad omens considering he still was trying to not think about that other Fandom but those thoughts crept in more likely than not.

He shook his head at himself and made his mind go blank. Easier to deal with.

[i'm bored and it's about to storm like hell. so, natch, this is open!]

One would think that after the bit on the beach with the nakedness and the staring, Rose would have learned to run far, far away from gremlins when they ventured near.

One would think.

Rose, however, was special too busy berating the gremlin for stealing her clothes in the first place to notice him coming closer, fangs bared.

Which was why shortly there after, Rose came rushing into the common room, her hair fixed by little birdies caught back in a ribbon and the long skirts of what looked like one of Morgana's dresses swirling about her ankles.

"Oh my! This is a terrible mess," she exclaimed, clapping her hands together in front of her chest as she surveyed the Common Room. "We'd better clean it quickly before our little friends come home from the mines. They'll have had a long day's work, and they'll want their dinner."

A moment later, she was skipping around the room, wielding a duster and a mop and somehow managing to leave everything sparkly clean in her wake.It was probably the song that Rose was happily carolling that did it.

"Just whistle while you work
Put on that grin and start right in to whistle loud and long
Just hum a merry tune
Just do your best and take a rest and sing yourself a song"

[OOC:  It's been a Week.  Crack is happy-making.]

The sun had set, and darkness was falling, but Rose didn't want to go up to her room.  She also couldn't quite shake the feeling that something was going to come out of the trees, and that it wasn't safe to stay outside without a weapon or a patrol.

Which was the reason that Rose sat down in one of the chairs, trying not to think about anything other than fun way she'd spent the afternoon and playing with her phone until it was late enough to text Lissa.  She wasn't going to let some stupid fear worry about a world that wasn't hers drive her inside before she was good and ready to go, dammit.

[Not having a roof on the deck, it seems to be open!]

Alex couldn't really stand the thought of spending time in his room today just because he'd spent three days sleeping on the floor. He needed to be out and moving so he went instead of low and found himself leaning against the edge of roof and sucking on a cigarette.

Three days without one for a guy with a fierce nicotine addiction was almost another version of hell on earth for him. And while the cigarette was nice, the quiet meant his thoughts skittered to unpleasant places again and he really couldn't stop them.

At least he didn't have to worry about getting his ass killed anymore. Well, not by vampires, at least.

[roof is open!]
