Alex didn't have classes until Thursday. Sure, that left him with all his shit to do during the last two days of the weekend but it was pretty freaking sweet right now. It meant he could do absolutely nothing or as much as he wanted without having to worry about a class.

Currently, he was filling all his free time with some good ole smoking. He'd even foregone sprawling out on the ledge so he could just sit up on it, feet dangling over the edge while he smoked. The sun was still out, it was still fairly nice and he was still in a fairly good mood. That didn't happen often. He knew why and, at those thoughts, couldn't help but pull out his phone and look through a few certain things.

Yep. Still in a good mood.

Well, it would be seen how long his good mood would last after Karla made an appearance. "Kiss, kiss," she said, upon seeing someone had also had her brilliant plan of spending some time out on the roof.

Oh, Alex knew that voice fairly well. And see how good a mood his was when he didn't immediately start in on her? Rare thing, that.

"Maybe next time," he quipped though it was mild. "We might wanna start with hugging."

Funny, though, since Karla's voice instantly went flat [joke goes here] when she recognized his. "Oh. It's you."

"You sound so thrilled to see me," Alex said, eyes flicking back to the dirty pictures on his phone for a minute. "And all I did was say hello. Hair trigger today, Karla? Cigarette might calm you down."

"I'm always about this thrilled to see you, Alex," Karla said, sauntering over to the edge of the roof. Hey! She wasn't about to run off just because he was up here. No way. Though she did sit with plenty of space between them--knowing full well that no matter where she sat, it would invite some kind of comment from him.

"And no thanks," she said, flicking her eyes down to the cigarette. "I don't like them."

Jack waved, a bit lazily. "Hello there, Karla. It's been a while!"

Unlike some people on the roof, Jack got a happy smile and a wave of greeting. "It has been," she agreed, shifting over a bit so he'd have plenty of space if he wanted. "I spent most of last week sulking in my room, so I wasn't about to be seen. Or fit to be seen for that matter."

"I was a terrier pup," Jack shared. "That's my excuse. Why were you sulking?"

"I don't like graduation," Karla admitted, since it was one of the things she could admit to. "I'm not at all fond of my friends going away."

Abandonment issues, thy name is Karla.

"And then I got arrested." That last might have been said with a bit of studied nonchalance, yes. With a bit of peeking out from under her lashes to see his reactions.

Lindsay was sort of wandering aimlessly through the dorm halls, which led her to the roof eventually. She wasn't really surprised to find someone smoking up there.

"So is this the designated smoking area?" she asked curiously.

"Don't think it's specifically designated but fuck if that stops anyone," Alex said, peering at the new arrival. Didn't recognize her so he figured new student. "You looking for a place to smoke or a place to avoid?"

"I just kind of wandered up here. Looking for a place to think, I guess," Lindsay said with a shrug. "I'm not really a cigarette smoker, but I'm not gonna stop anyone else from smoking."

"A place to think?" Alex repeated, raising an eyebrow and offering a cigarette anyway. Pretty girl and all. "What's wrong with your room?"

"No thanks," she said, passing on the cigarette. "Nothing's wrong with my room. It's just not outside."

"I wouldn't try it if I were you," Karla warned direly. "Not only are they bad for you, but this world's Healers can't even fix the damage!"

She sounded almost put out by the whole idea. And fairly incredulous, too.

Lindsay raised an eyebrow at that. "You're not from this world?"

She couldn't believe she was asking this.

Karla shook her head. "Nope. I've been here about a year now--came for the first summer session last year. And even now, things about this world boggle me."

And not in the good way, her dark look at Alex seemed to suggest.

"I'm Karla. From a world called Kaeleer. Welcome to the island," she said, glancing back over to Lindsay and smiling.

"Thanks," Lindsay said, trying not to boggle too much. "I'm Lindsay. From Michigan. So is this Kaeleer another planet or something?"

"It is if you don't want to annoy your roommate," Jack said dryly. "Though I don't mind the view, either."

He gestured over the island vista in illustration.

"I'm Jack. You must be new."

"It's definitely a nice view," Lindsay agreed, looking over the island. "I'm Lindsay. And you guessed correctly. Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you," Jack repeated. "What brought you here, Lindsay?"

"Evening," Jack said, meandering up and standing so he could peer over the island. It was rare for him to be on the roof while it was still light, and something about that had him oddly sentimental.

That lasted all of a moment before he pulled his own cigarettes out of a pocket.

"Terrified any new kids yet?"

"Haven't had the chance yet," Alex said, glancing across at Jack. "Shame, isn't it? You?"

"I'm nice," Jack answered.

Which anyone who'd spent more than an hour with him would know was a lie, but eh.

"I haven't even met any of them yet, other than the ones I saw in class today. I'm falling down."

"Two girls thought I was a fucking tour guide or a suggestion box and kept telling me they were lost and Emma tried to get me to take off my shirt but that was about it for my new kid picnic."

Pretty slack if he didn't say so.

"What've you been doing with your time? I expect more from you, Jack."
