Wednesday After Period 3

Cassidy had really enjoyed her classes so far here at the school. However, there was still some tension in her and so she had to go to the one place that always drew her to it.

No matter where she was, a garden always made her feel so much better. That would be why, after changing her clothes and leaving a small container of cupcakes in their room for Hiccup, Cassidy was now on her knees in the dirt of the garden.

As she weeded and moved soil around, she could feel a lot of her worry and tension leaving her.

And yes, she had shielded her hands before starting her work.

The last time Jonas had been out to the garden, he'd been half his size and making mud pies with Karla. He didn't have any plans to do that today but that wasn't going to stop him from wandering into the garden after his workshop.

"Hello," Jonas said quietly, trying not to startle the unfamiliar girl. "Are you planting flowers?"

Cassidy looked up and smiled.

"Weeding mostly," she said. "I plan to plant some later." She smiled at him again. "I'm Cassidy."

"Jonas," he said, crouching down nearby and sliding his own fingers through the unearthed dirt. "What's weeding, if you don't mind me asking? Is it what it sounds like?"

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Jonas." She nodded, her own hands were covered in dirt as she moved some more of the weeds out of the way. "It's pulling the weeds away from the plants that could interfere with their growth. I try to only pull the ones that are really a danger to the more fragile plants and flowers. That way, the plants we're trying to cultivate get the nutrients that they need and they don't have to fight off the more aggressive weeds."

"And you as well," Jonas said, returning that sentiment easily. "I'm sorry for the seemingly silly question. I've never seen someone weed before. I've only recently been exposed to botany at all so I'm still learning as I go. Is it a difficult thing?"

"It wasn't a silly question at all," Cassidy assured him. "Even the best gardeners back home need to learn how to weed in the beginning." She smiled and shook her head. "Not usually. It's fairly easy to learn, and you just need to be careful of the weeds that have pricklers on their stems or leaves. They can itch or make your hands bleed if you're not wearing gloves or have your hands shielded."

Please forgive the excited witchling with the passion for gardening, Jonas. She might very well continue to babble on about it.

"We didn't have a a real need for gardeners back home," he explained, sinking down to his knees and picking up some dirt so he could peer at it. "We had Landscape Workers so I'm sure there was weeding done but it wasn't something I was party to."

Jonas kept realizing how much, big and small, he'd missed. "Weeds seem like a fair nuisance. Is there a way to prevent them?"

"I love working in the gardens no matter where I am," she said, pulling out another weed. "I guess some people might have a way to do it, but back home, those of us with an affinity for the land don't mind doing it. Sometimes, when I have a problem I need to work out, weeding helps me with that."

"You're troubled?" Jonas asked, taking that statement and applying it to what she was doing now.

"Hmm? Oh, no, sorry," she said, giving him an embarrassed smile. "I'm not troubled today. I'm just getting used to being in a new place. Finding the garden helped make me feel more at home."

"Oh. Well, that's good," he said sincerely, smiling. "How are you finding things so far? I've been here awhile now and it's still confusing and sometimes overwhelming."

She pulled another weed and then brushed her hair back, before smiling again. "It's definitely overwhelming and the technology is taking some getting used to," she admitted. "We don't have a lot of things like that back at home in my world."

"We didn't either and I know of several other people who didn't as well," Jonas assured her. "Some of the technology is fairly easy to learn, like the toaster. Some of it is very difficult though. Where are you from that you didn't have technology?"

"Oh that's very good," she said with a smile. "I was hoping that I wasn't going to be the only one that was confused about all of it." She tilted her head. "I'm from Kaeleer. We use Craft to take care of most things."

"Kaeleer?" Jonas asked, almost surprised when that word pinged his few ragged memories. "The same Kaeleer as Karla?"

Cassidy nodded and smiled again. "Same realm, different territory. I was really happy to meet someone from home."

"She's offered to help me in learning how to bake," Jonas said, smiling at that. "We accomplished pancakes a few weeks ago without much of a mess. It wasn't too bad either."

"Baking is fun, so I'm sure that Karla is going to be an excellent teacher." Most witches were good at making things and she had yet to meet one that couldn't bake.

If she'd met Karla then she'd met one that couldn't bake. Jonas didn't realize that yet.

"What brings you here?" Jonas wondered, curious. "Kaeleer seems like a long way from here."

"Oh, my mother heard about this school and she thought it would be a good place for me to meet other people so I wasn't so shy all of the time."

Well, that and because they thought she'd be a little safer here with all of the stories they were hearing about things happening to witches in the Realms.

Jonas nodded at that and let some dirt slip through his fingers. "Were you able to get a good roommate and big sibling?"

"Oh yes," Cassidy nodded, moving some dirt around a flower she had accidentally uprooted. She fed a little Craft to it in order to repair any damage she may have done. "My roommate is very nice and his dragon is so sweet and playful. My big sib seems pretty nice. She accidentally scared me at first, but felt really bad that she had done so."

Yes, making jokes about her being broken had not been the best thing to have happen upon meeting someone.

"See, and you seem to be talking to me without any trouble so perhaps your mother made a good choice when she sent you here," Jonas said, nodding. "I think you'll find that this is the sort of place where it's hard to be shy. There are always people around."

"You're interested in the land and that helps me not be so shy or quiet," she explained as if it was all of the reason she needed. It probably really was. "And you're very nice and not frightening." She tilted her head for a moment. "I've never been some place where there are so many people."

"I don't think I could ever be described as frightening," Jonas said, snickering at that. Frightened, yes, but not frightening. "I'm more on the shy and unassuming side of things for the most part. Home for me wasn't nearly this large either. It wasn't this loose and uninhibited either but that was more my home's fault than this island's."
