Wednesday After Period 3

Cassidy had really enjoyed her classes so far here at the school. However, there was still some tension in her and so she had to go to the one place that always drew her to it.

No matter where she was, a garden always made her feel so much better. That would be why, after changing her clothes and leaving a small container of cupcakes in their room for Hiccup, Cassidy was now on her knees in the dirt of the garden.

As she weeded and moved soil around, she could feel a lot of her worry and tension leaving her.

And yes, she had shielded her hands before starting her work.

"Oh, my mother heard about this school and she thought it would be a good place for me to meet other people so I wasn't so shy all of the time."

Well, that and because they thought she'd be a little safer here with all of the stories they were hearing about things happening to witches in the Realms.

Jonas nodded at that and let some dirt slip through his fingers. "Were you able to get a good roommate and big sibling?"

"Oh yes," Cassidy nodded, moving some dirt around a flower she had accidentally uprooted. She fed a little Craft to it in order to repair any damage she may have done. "My roommate is very nice and his dragon is so sweet and playful. My big sib seems pretty nice. She accidentally scared me at first, but felt really bad that she had done so."

Yes, making jokes about her being broken had not been the best thing to have happen upon meeting someone.

"See, and you seem to be talking to me without any trouble so perhaps your mother made a good choice when she sent you here," Jonas said, nodding. "I think you'll find that this is the sort of place where it's hard to be shy. There are always people around."

"You're interested in the land and that helps me not be so shy or quiet," she explained as if it was all of the reason she needed. It probably really was. "And you're very nice and not frightening." She tilted her head for a moment. "I've never been some place where there are so many people."

"I don't think I could ever be described as frightening," Jonas said, snickering at that. Frightened, yes, but not frightening. "I'm more on the shy and unassuming side of things for the most part. Home for me wasn't nearly this large either. It wasn't this loose and uninhibited either but that was more my home's fault than this island's."

"It's possible that that is why I am comfortable talking to you," she said with a smile. "Are you from a different world as well? Or is that rude to ask someone I've just met?"

Yes, she was still struggling to figure out how Protocol fit in here.

"It's not and...I don't think I am," Jonas said, still unsure of that fact. "I'm from a place called the Community and we were never really permitted to go Elsewhere unless supervised. Even then, it was just called Elsewhere. We didn't learn about other places so I have no real idea if I was on this planet or not. I assume I was."

His home didn't sound very nice at all, but Cassidy wasn't going to say that as it would be rude. She was enjoying talking to Jonas and saying something like that would probably end that very fast.

She turned her attention back to the plants. "How did you manage to come here? Did your parents hear about the school, too?"

"No, my parents aren't around," he said, going for the vague explanation. "I came here on my own. My last school was educational but it was very...narrow in scope. I was looking for something different."

Cassidy nodded, not prying about his parents. "I believe that you were very successful in finding something different," she said with a smile.

"I think the same could be said for everyone here," Jonas laughed. "From what I've heard, no one expected a school or even an island like this. It's...strange."

"I'm very sure that my parents never expected anything like this." She tilted her head. "How strange?"

"The other weekend, I woke up as a child," Jonas shared, deciding to be completely honest. "Or, I should say, I woke up as me but I'd de-aged several years."

Cassidy stared at him for a very long moment, but she didn't detect that he was teasing her. He seemed completely sincere. "Was it a spell that went awry?"

"Not that I'm aware of," Jonas told her, shaking his head. "Sometimes, things just...happen here. The island, it's almost magic on its own."

Cassidy thought about that. "Then this place really is a lot more different than my mother thought it was," she smiled at him. "Do strange things like that happen often?"

"Yes," he said and rubbed the back of his neck. "It's not constant, I promise, but more often than not, strange things happen that range from scale to rather...large."

...

"Rather large?"

"There have been...a few invasions since my arrival," he said, trying as best he could to put it lightly and innocently.

It was good that he wasn't Blood or he would have immediately sensed the alarm that was building within her.

"Someone tried to invade a school? What kind of twisted person would do that?"

Oh, that innocence in the witchling was doomed to fail, wasn't it?

"Well, it's not the school, it's more the island," Jonas clarified. "And it's happened more than once so it's not always one person either."

Cassidy nodded, not sure if that really made a difference. "Is this something that happens often?" Then she remembered the posters she had seen. "Is that what the reserves were created for?"

"I...perhaps?" Jonas shrugged. "I don't know much about the reserves to be honest. I've seen them mentioned but I don't tend to go as I'm not really skilled in either of those areas. And I don't know if they're organized during invasions. Everything's a little crazy then."

"Oh. I hope that no one gets serious injured during these invasions."

Of course, that news made Cassidy want to learn to be able to better defend herself if it was needed.
