"Hey, guys," said Zack once people seemed more or less assembled for today's reserves meeting. "Since we're working on getting involved in some more in-depth exercises in the future, I thought that maybe keeping it simple today would be for the best. You more or less know one another by now, I think, but do you know how the other people here in the group work?" He grinned a bit, and then shrugged. "Unarmed sparring. Grab a partner and go at it. Don't do anything to seriously hurt your partner, though. I want to see you going for grabs and holds and light contact, but not force. We want our crew in one piece, here. And if someone does get hurt, come see me. I have potions, or else I can help haul your butt to the clinic."

The look that he was wearing was one of those very serious looks that suggested that he would be very displeased if it came down to hauling anyone's butt to the clinic, okay. And considering the bouncy puppy that he was a semester ago, it probably seemed all the more severe if you happened to know Zack.

"Before we get started, I want to announce the other two leaders who will be stepping up to help me lead the group. Jak and Kennedy both have some excellent ideas about further training exercises, and they've both agreed to take leadership roles here, and so if you see them be sure to give them a pat on the back, or at least a little respect, okay?"

Whatever your idea of respect was.

Someday, Zack would get used to the face smooshing. For the time being, he'd just smile tolerantly and work on not wincing!

"I have my moments," he laughed. "And I'm sure paint is easy enough to find in town. Turtle and Canary has almost everything."

Except for duct tape.

"Do they have turtles?!!?! And canaries?!!?!"

... There was a fair question in its own right.

"Actually, I think Everything But The Monkey probably has those," Zack offered, along with a sheepish smile. "I could take you sometime, if you want to get a pet."

Because that was just what the school needed. Another crazy student with a small animal.

Mr. Winkles disapproved from somewhere in the depths of Zack's pockets.

"I'm not allowed to have pets," Dandelion said with a frown. "That's one of the rules the band has. Possibly because I adopted a warthog one time and they never seemed to get over that."

"Not even a goldfish? Or a pet rock?" Zack was kind of left agape, here. "What's a warthog, anyhow?"

Gaia didn't have much in the way of lumpy pigs, apparently.

"It's a giant pig with tusks," she said waving her index fingers where the tusks would be on a warthog's face. "And apparently they can't be housebroken.

"... Ew."

Eloquent, Zack.

"Well, maybe we'll get you a pet rock, then. There's no problem with housebreaking those, and as an added bonus, you can use it as a weapon against the viking dinosaur horde."

"A rock?"

Cue big watery eyes.

"A pet?"

Yep. The eyes got bigger.

"Weapon for the viking dinosaur horde?"

Cue gut busting hug.

"BEST! SIBLING! EVER!"

"Hnngh!"

That was a 'hnngh' of love. Truly!

"Now the big question is, should I spray-paint it green for you, first?"

"Hmm. Good question," Dandelion said releasing her brother and assuming a thoughtful pose. "Does it need to be green since it already is from the Earth. Hmmm."

"Maybe if I glue some googly eyes onto it, that'll be good enough?" Zack was going to take this opportunity to do that breathing thing. He'd heard that breathing was good for him, once, and so he had made a promise to himself to do it as often as possible. Hopefully all of the time, if he could get away with it. "If you get really lucky, it'll just stare the viking dinosaurs down!"

"But then how will I win any staring contests with it?" Dandelion said her usual veering way. "Nope! No eyes. Also that way it can't see me or my roomie naked."

... You know, the awesome thing was that this was logic that Zack really couldn't argue with.

"I could paint eyes onto it, instead? Closed ones? That way, you'll win all of the staring contests. Ever."

"Genius!" Dandelion declared. "Though how will I know if it's dead or not?"

"That's the best thing about pet rocks," Zack replied, laughing. "They come with a lifetime guarantee! He'll outlive you, easily, unless you decide to take a sledgehammer to him."

A pause.

"Which would be a kinda mean thing to do to your pet."

"Unless it was a viking," Dandelion agreed. "But Viking rocks are hard to come by."

"I'd probably have to get those ones imported," Zack decided.

He still didn't know quite what a Viking was. He suspected someday he'd have to look it up.
