"I'm new," Christian confirmed. "Though I'm tempted to say you were just that hermit-y, just to see what would happen."

"I'd pout, probably. Sooooo, where ya from and all that noise?"

"London," Christian answered. "But a hundred and fifteen years ago. I still don't understand how that works, do you?"

She was doing science -- she just might.

"What about you?"

"The exact mechanics? No. My current theory is that the island is on a nexus of certain forces that the science of my time has yet to discover and describe, which can bend the fabric of reality in a selective fashion."

Was that sciencey enough for him?

"I'm from Minnesota. Which . . . might have been a state a hundred and fifty years ago? I'm not sure. History's not my best subject."

"American history isn't one of mine, either," he said. "But Minnesota does sound familiar. Not that I know more about it than the name."
