Main Campfire | Wednesday Night | 6.2.2010

Peter was technically tempting fate, lying down near the campfire. He made sure his feet were far enough from the fire that he wasn't in danger of accidentally setting himself on fire.

He was humming 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds' to himself, looking up at the stars. This totally beat random TV in a common room.

Ellie didn't feel like being inside tonight, so she headed out to the campfire

"That's one way to relax," she said to Peter as she sat down near the fire.

"I figured something low key tonight," Peter remarked. "So best to enjoy something that won't cause people to make thinly veiled threats at me."

"Do people often make thinly veiled threats at you?" Ellie asked, amused.

"Only when I set off fireworks, apparently," Peter said. "Some kids are just from the extra-jumpy universes."

He sat up, and gave Ellie a little wave. "Peter Bishop. Nice to meet you."

"Oh yeah. That happens around here," Ellie grinned. "Ellie Bartowski. Nice to meet you, too. You're from an earth universe of some kind I'm guessing?"

"You know, I never thought I'd meet girls who have to use the phrase 'earth universe' in a context that isn't a Galactic Battles convention," Peter said. "But you're right. 1996 plain old Earth for me."

"Well, I grew up with a brother who's into sci-fi. Plus, I've been here a year and got used to the whole different universes thing," Ellie explained. "We're from the same era. It's 1997 where I'm from."

Claudia wandered up. "You look comfy."

"Hey, practically the same year," Peter said. "It's almost terrifying that this is something to potentially bond over."

"You should try it," Peter said. "It's amazing, people have been finding the ground comfortable for centuries. And yet, some avoid it like the plague."

"Well, some of them don't want to get dirty." Claudia plopped down to sit by him. "Me, I mostly just don't wanna accidentally lie down on a rock."

Ellie nodded, laughing slightly. "At least some of the tv shows from this time are good, but the music is better in the 90s."

"Well that's just a matter of checking before you lie down," Peter said. "Diligence is always a good idea. Unless you're in a hurry, and then, well, definitions and all that."

He sat up a bit. "So I heard about your trebuchet."

"Yeah? It's gonna be pretty sweet. And very shiny."

"I think it's my new goal in life that when I get back to my own time, I have to make sure that T-Pain never has a recording career," Peter said.

"How big are you building this thing, anyway?" Peter asked. "I ask mainly because of wondering what you plan to use as ammunition in case of one of these invasions I keep hearing about."

"Hey. We're in a few of the same classes, I think," Ellie said, making conversation.

"I think a lot of people would thank you for that," Ellie told him.

"Ah, but they'll never know what I saved them from," Peter said. "I'll just have to live in my own happy satisfaction."

Which was what he did normally, really.

"So, what brought you to this fine new branch of higher education?"

"I think livestock might be traditional. Or flaming balls of flaminess. I was thinking maybe giant water balloons, to start off with."

Look, she was having fun with this idea, okay?

"You know, for test runs. We can save the fireballs for actual invasions requiring fire."

"Probably." Claudia offered a hand. "I'm Claudia."

"I'm not sure giant water balloons are exactly aerodynamic," Peter said. "I mean, getting something that can handle being flung at a great velocity and hold that much volume, but still breaks on impact? You've got your work cut out for you."

"True. But that just makes it more interesting."

"Could always try Jell-o," Peter said. "Just as non-lethal, and a little more solid."

"Plus it comes in bunches of different flavors. It would probably liquify before impact, so you'd get some good splatter." She tilted her head. "I should look up what paint ball shells are made of."
