The Roof, Sunday night

Momoko was up on the roof, but not because she was upset. She was actually very happy and excited; she couldn't remember what the holiday was, but she loved any celebration with fireworks and the roof had the best view she could get without actually being in the sky.

So as soon as she'd heard the first familiar 'boom-crack-speeeeeew-shooosh', she'd grabbed her music player and made a quick dash to the common room for snacks. And now there was a very hyper red-head ~~bouncing~~ sitting on the edge of the roof, enjoying a night sky full of pretty lights and explosions to some soft pop music.

There was plenty of sky, roof, and food if anyone wanted to join her.

Robin had come up to the roof, saw that Momoko was there, and then made a mad dash back to his room to get something.

Then he was back up on the roof hiding something behind his back.

"Hi Momoko! Happy 4th!"

Momoko turned and grinned, waving him over. "Hi Robin! Come sit! Come sit! You can see everything from here! Happy 4th to you, too!"

Robin came over and then held out what he'd been hiding. A carefully folded up t-shirt for a Broadway musical. "For you."

"Wow! Thank you, Robin!" Momoko took the shirt and held it to her. Ooh! She had a pair of jeans that would look awesome with it. And those new sandals she'd ordered online! "It's awesome! I didn't know we were supposed to exchange gifts today, I'm sorry! I'll totally get you something tomorrow?"

Now she really had to look up what the holiday was about.

"Oh no, this isn't because it's the fourth." he assured her. "I just saw that while I was in New York and thought you'd like it." And if he'd known it was her birthday a few days ago that would have been the reason.

"Ah! I do, I do!" She reached over to give him a hug. "Thank you! It's my second time being in America for this holiday and I still don't remember what it's for." She chuckled. "Was New York fun? Did you go see this musical?"

"Uh huh! I went to audition for a school up there, and then stayed to see the sights. And the show was really good. Oh, and the 4th of July is when we celebrate the United States' Independence from England."

"Eh?" Momoko blinked at him, confused. "You're transferring to another school?!"

"No, I'll keep going here till graduation. But I think I'll be going there for college." The possibility had existed for him to finish out high school there, but he rather liked it here.

"Oh! And you had to audition? A whole year early?" She was impressed. "Wow! It must be a good school if it's that hard to get into!"

"There's a lot of people who want to get in, so they stretch the auditions over a long period of time." Robin nodded. "I had to sing, play the banjo, and do a monologue. I tried dancing but that didn't work out so well."

"I see! It still sounds pretty hard to get into, though. What happened with the dancing? And when will you know if you got accepted?" Momoko held out a bag of chips to him. "Want some?"

"Thanks!" Robin took a small handful (naturally) of chips and munched on them. "Sometime around Christmas I think. Enough time to apply for other schools if necessary." He had to take a moment to consider this. "I can't believe I'm getting ready for college. I'm going to be a senior this year!"

"I know, me too." Momoko sagged a bit. "I'm totally not sure what I'm going to do, though. I'm just not ready!"

"I've always felt kinda lucky." Robin said. "I've always known I wanted to go into show business. But a lot of my friends back home have no idea what they want to do with their lives.

"Well, you are very talented. If you didn't do something musical I'd probably yell at you a lot." Momoko grinned and munched on a chip as a spectacular red and white combo split the air.

Robin giggled, then the fireworks went off. "Oooohhhhh! Are any Japanese holidays that use fireworks?"

"All the time! It's my favourite part of going to festivals!" Momoko beamed, watching the lights shimmer against the dark sky. "Except for the food, of course! I don't know why more of your holidays don't use fireworks."

"Well some people set them off on New Years." Robin said thoughtfully. "But you're right, there don't seem to be many occasions where we set them off."

"They're so pretty! It's a shame, but I guess that makes them even more exciting for some people, if you only get to see them once or twice a year? Kind of like seeing an old friend you haven't seen in a while."

"Yeah I bet that's it." Robin agreed. One of the fireworks went off in a burst of red and blue, then seconds later, a rapid fire storm of white erupted. "Woooow." And one nice thing about the 4th here? No scared tadpoles crying. "The echo is neat too."

"I like the whole thing! The colours, the sounds, the way you can sometimes feel the boom in your chest if it's a really good one..." A rapid series of booming rockets apparently took that as a cue, setting off huge glittery blossoms of red then white then blue then red then white then blue.

"Like that!" She laughed.

That one almost knocked Robin onto his back. "I see what you mean." he said laughing, and righting himself.
