Behind the Dorms, Tuesday After Workshops

When the reserves group gathered for today’s meeting, they’d be met with... Well, they’d be met with Zack, stepping forward and grinning brightly at the lot of them, maybe bouncing on his toes for good measure. Hey, just because there was the possibility of new people didn’t mean he was going to try to be all serious about it. Zack didn’t do serious all that well.

“Hey, guys! Welcome to the first reserves meeting of the new term!” He nodded toward the table that was set up nearby. “Help yourself to the cookies if you haven’t already? We’re going to take it easy today before we get into the serious stuff again next week. Introductions and things like that, in case there are any newbies around, you know? Starting with us, of course. I’m Zack Fair, SOLDIER 1st Class. I specialize in working with swords,” like the absolutely massive one on his back, “and take on some of the most heavy missions that my job back home can hand a guy. Usually on my own.”

“Kennedy,” the girl who was about half his size and cradling a crossbow in the crook of one arm spoke up. “Potential Slayer, trained to fight demons and your standard supernatural baddies. Long story, ask me later if you want to know. I know swords, not as much as Zack does, and knives and a few other things, but my real favorite is this baby here. I’ve been working with crossbows for nine years.”

“Jak,” said the blond who looked like he both desperately needed a haircut, and didn’t care much about haircuts to begin with. He also had ears that stuck out... at least several inches and tapered off to a pointy end, and a chunk of metal strapped to his thigh. “Freedom fighter. I’m good with hand-to-hand, but my thing is shooting things. Or blowing them up.” He took said chunk of metal from his thigh, pulled another chunk of metal off his back and pressed the two of them together. The whole affair stretched out suddenly, assuming the shape of a gun with a large blue cartridge shoved in the back. “Any questions?”

Name, experience, weapons that you’re skilled with and any other talents that might come in handy here in the military reserves!

"I'm Gunn," he said crossing his arms and trying to maintain his "bad ass" attitude. "Used to lead my crew back in LA against a bunch of vampires on a nightly basis. I'm good with stakes, swords, axes, crossbows, fists. You name it."

"I still owe you a throwdown in the gym sometime, don't I?" Kennedy asked, grinning. "We should get to that."

"We should," Gunn replied smiling back. "I also go out on patrol on a regular basis if you want to tag along."

"Hey, I don't 'tag along'," Kennedy answered, attitude-y but friendly, and also with the one-handed air quotes. "I must have terrible RP timing never run into you, 'cause I patrol pretty regularly too. I'm up for making it a field trip, though, why the hell not?"

"Shane Gooseman, Goose," Goose said, "I've had military training and blasters are my main weapon of choice, give me a blaster and I'll shoot it"

"Ino," she said, with a bit of a wave. "I'm not bad at hand-to-hand or with knives and needles," senbon, "but I'm primarily a saboteur and healer.”

And infiltration and assassination, but Ino wasn’t too keen on sharing that, really.

Kennedy had to ask.

"...needles?"

What, was it like a voodoo thing? Or not, but, you know, sounded trippy all the same. Thus having to ask.

"Senbon," she said, wondering if she should have just stuck with the actual name for them rather than simplifying. "Metal needles the length of my hand with points at both ends. Flexible, light and easy to carry and conceal, and can easily be coated with poison."

"Oh. Gotcha," Kennedy replied, much less skeptical now, and creeping towards weapons-geek mode. Okay, the poison part was still a little disturbing, but the reminder that weapons could be poisoned? Always useful. "Awesome. Can I check those out sometime?"

What? New and funky weapons were intriguing.

"James, Squire of Krondor," he said, one hand resting lightly on the hilt of his rapier. "Swords and knives, and some familiarity with distractions." Like the smoke bomb he currently had hidden in a belt pouch.

"Tahiri Veila, Jedi Knight," she introduced herself, still a touch uncomfortable with the full title but less so than when she'd first been Knighted. "I've been actively involved in the recently-ended war at home for three years: ground combat with lightsabers and blasters as well as hand-to-hand, infiltration missions, strike teams --" her voice might have caught for just the briefest moment there -- "and, um, I commanded a starfighter squadron for a little while."

She tried for a self-deprecating smile. "We're sort of expected to be able to do just about anything that gets thrown our way."

"Hello, I'm Asuna Kagurazaka!" She waved. "I trained in martial arts and the sword and I'm a little strong." Asuna was about to sit down when she remembered another detail and popped back up to her feet. "Oh, and I helped fight demons at home!"

By the time it was Madison's turn, she was feeling rather outclassed.

"Uh, I'm Madison Avery," she said. "I don't have any weapons experience but I took martial arts for a couple of years."

"What are martial arts?" Katniss asked, arching an eyebrow. If there was any disdain evident in that question, it was mostly because she didn't really understand how 'arts' would help in this kind of situation.

Well. Unless she meant she could camouflage, like Peeta. Then she saw the usefulness.

"It's a style of fighting," Madison explained. "The kind I did is called Taekwondo and it originated in Korea."

Given everything she had learned over the past few days, she had put two and two together to realize her roommate wasn't from a world like hers.

Yeah, given that, Katniss was barely able to follow. She took it that Korea was another country (though not one that she remembered well from school, if they'd ever learned it), at least, even if the rest seemed like gibberish. "Do you use a weapon while fighting?" she asked, setting aside her curiosity about the incidentals. "Or is it just hand-to-hand?"

Given that most of the hand-to-hand fighters she'd met in the arena had been boys ranging in size from Peeta to Thresh, she suspected that this was a less than useful skill unless matched with someone roughly your own size. It made her all the more grateful that she knew how to hold a knife, and to hide in trees.

"Blysse Norwood, House Kestrel," Firekeeper said with a nod. "And he is Blind Seer," one hand rested on the large wolf whose height nearly reached her shoulder. "We have fighted in a few wars and battles, Blind Seer have his teeth and claws, and I have some practice with a sword, but I am best with a bow or my Fang," she finished, holding up her hunting knife that she usually kept on her belt. "Also, wolf senses is better than human. We can smell and hear things that you- probably- cannot."

The girl with the wolf definitely caught Madison's attention. That was a giant wolf. Who thankfully did not seem keen on attacking anyone.

Madison offered a hesitant wave.

"Uh, hi," Madison said, taking a few steps closer though not wanting to get too close for fear of freaking out the giant wolf. "I'm Madison. One of the new kids."

"Cloud Strife."

This was the...no, he didn't remember how many times he had said his name out loud.

"Swords. The bigger the better." The Fusion Blades were still locked away, so he didn't have a chance to prove his point. Which was a shame. Next time, if he decided to come along.

And that was all he would say without nudging.

"I'm Leda, I've lived in a city where there's the occasional gang warfare. Uh, I'm best with a knife, both throwing and hand held, and I'm fairly competent with handguns. And I know a bit of combat magic too."

"I'm Dru Anderson," Dru said when it was her turn. "I've helped my dad hunt a bunch of different supernatural creatures. I'm pretty good with a gun and a knife. And I've studied Tai Chi and other fighting techniques for a few years."

"Katniss Everdeen," she said, raising her chin a little and speaking louder than she had in most of her prior introductions. "I've been hunting and shooting since the age of eleven. I'm best if I'm able to use a bow and arrow, but I'm handy enough with a knife, if needs be." She paused, almost hesitant, before adding, "And I'm really good at climbing trees and hiding."

No need to elaborate there. That was really what had kept her alive during the Games, and even if she was being watched, that wasn't a secret -- nor was her poaching, or her skill with a bow.
