Second Floor Common Room [Friday evening]

Katniss and Rue had, on the floor before them, a truly bizarre assortment of food: several different kinds of fruit, a couple loaves of bread, a box of Twinkies (she had to prove they were real), and as much candy as Katniss had been able to carry.

"Even I haven't been able to try all of these," Katniss admitted, tentatively pulling a Twizzler.

Rue poured a handful out and poked at them suspiciously before trying a purple one.

"It tastes like...sugar," she decided. "And purple. Can something taste purple?"

"If anything can," Katniss said, selecting a green one, "I bet these could." She carefully tried the little candy, and frowned a bit. "It tastes green, yeah."

Rue poured out some M&Ms and compared the two different round candies. "Think those taste blue?"

"Those are chocolate inside," Katniss told her, recognizing the little Ms on them. "They don't taste like their colors. It's weird."

"Very weird," Rue agreed, poking them. "Are little circles important or something?"

"No idea. But they're everywhere," Katniss agreed, eyes wide. "Try a Twinkie, too. They're...different."

Rue poked it and giggled as it sprang back. "Is it cake?"

"With cream in the center. That's what Luke told me, and he seemed to be an expert on food," she told her seriously.

"How does the cream get in there?" Rue asked before taking a bite. "Ohhhh. Can you send these to Peeta?"

"Do you really think I should?" Katniss asked with a laugh. "Peeta might think I like these better than his cakes."

"Or he might see it as you sharing things from where you are now and not forgetting about him," Rue countered.

"I do need to send him something," Katniss said thoughtfully. "Twinkies might be the thing to show I haven't forgotten him. Or how we're in love," she added, trying to sound totally genuine. She sort of failed. Just a little.

Rue poked her finger through the cream and giggled. "I'm not sure they're quite that good."

Katniss had to laugh, too. "A sign of my devotion, anyway?" she suggested. "A reminder I'm thinking of him?"

"That it would do," Rue said. "Maybe send him candy, too. He wouldn't have tried those!"

"He can use it to decorate," she said thoughtfully.

Rue nodded, happy to have helped. "And then maybe the rest of the District would see the beauty too."

"Maybe," Katniss said carefully. "I did want to make sure he knows I miss him."

Because she didn't want to be executed.

"I'll send some sweets along with the herbs for my mother."

"She'll like that," Rue said. "What will you send Prim?"

Katniss thought for a moment, and decided, "Kiwis."

"Furry fruit!" Rue said, laughing with delight.

And that was why Katniss wanted to send them to her sister. She wanted to make Prim laugh that way.

"Exactly!" she said, laughing. "She can eat it with her cheese."

"Oooh," Rue said. "Is there cheese here too?"

Katniss nodded, grinning at her. "All kinds. And they have bread like Peeta makes, with the cheese baked into it."

"And the lights are on all the time," Rue said. "It's wonderful here."
