Second Floor Common Room [Friday evening]

Katniss and Rue had, on the floor before them, a truly bizarre assortment of food: several different kinds of fruit, a couple loaves of bread, a box of Twinkies (she had to prove they were real), and as much candy as Katniss had been able to carry.

"Even I haven't been able to try all of these," Katniss admitted, tentatively pulling a Twizzler.

That got an impressed raise of her eyebrow. "Really?" she asked. "Good work. I missed him entirely. That was a tough shot. I'm impressed, Wesley."

"Oh - thank you," he said, blushing. "Well, if you'd like, I could show you more of how to shoot later this week. And perhaps Rue as well, if she's interested," he added, giving Rue a friendly smile. "The trouble with Professor Price is that he doesn't quite demonstrate the basics for beginners."

"Rue won't be here long enough for that," Katniss said, before Rue could even open her mouth to answer. Because Rue didn't shoot. Katniss refused to expose her to more violence, now. She'd seen enough in her young life. "I'd like that, though. Captain Price said he'd let me have my bow the other weeks, thankfully. I was a little lost without it."

Wes got

that there was some mothering going on, but diplomatically elected not to comment. "Understandable," he said, nodding. "And that was rather nice of him. I'd rather expected that he would be more - er, specific. But I'm sure with your bow you'll be much more comfortable."

"I hope so," she said, unwrapping a Starburst. "I'd sort of expected him to go over the basics more, too? But, really...if you were able to hit that target today, you probably don't need it," she said with a little smile. "And my aim is usually very good, as well. Maybe he thinks we don't need basic instruction."

"It's possible," Wes agreed. "I saw more than a few people hit the target today, in fact, and those who didn't may well have been people like you who are accustomed to different weapons. Perhaps our class is advanced enough that he's simply skipping the earlier lessons."

She nodded. "Plus it was a really hard shot." She knew she wouldn't have gotten it with an arrow, either. It was way too far away. "Is that the kind of gun you're used to?"

"Oh, no," he said, laughing. "That kind is - much larger and bulkier than the kind I learned with. It's designed for large distances, whereas I was taught to ise a smaller handgun."

Katniss held up her thumb and two first fingers in an approximation of a handgun. "One of the ones that look like this?"

"Precisely," he said, nodding earnestly. "Do they still have those in - er, your time?"

"They use guns in the Capitol, but theirs are bigger," she said, nodding. "Mostly I saw people using them in Marksmanship."

"Oh." He blushed. "Yes, that would - make sense."

"Are large guns and bows the main weapons in your world?" Just cause Wes was an inquisitive nerd about everything, but guns were his favorite topic.

"Not many people use bows. I'm just fond of mine because my father taught me to use it," Katniss said, a little shy. "Um, some people use swords, clubs -- it depends on your district, in a lot of ways. Most people in District Twelve know their way around a knife, for necessity's sake, and our Peacekeepers carry clubs. I only know one other archer, personally, but there have to be others. In the Capitol, they have more...things. So they have guns. It's something of a luxury item."

Katniss was grateful for Rue's preoccupation with her food at that moment. She hadn't mentioned the weapon that had killed her friend, but she still wanted to shelter her. Even now that she was dead.

Wes nodded. "Fascinating," he said, because it was. You know. To him. "So you're rather like a relic," he mused, now off in nerdy Wes land. "From a future world, as weLl. You retain a skill no longer particularly common. Thus, a relic."

Oh, man, Wes. Quickest way to a girl's heart: make her feel outdated.

It got a smile out of her, though. "Sort of. My father taught me to shoot when I was little, because he did, to feed us. After he died, I picked up where he left off. But it's illegal to hunt in the woods outside our district, so most people don't. Plus I like my bow because I'm...well, not very big. My friend Peeta, now, he's very large and can handle a sword or a club. I'm much more comfortable hiding in a tree and waiting." She shrugged. "But yeah -- we have these other things, that people in other districts or richer districts use. But I never had access. So, I guess I'm kind of a relic."
