The roof, Saturday afternoon

So, it was official. They said it on the radio and everything. Fandom sucked, and was out to get her.

Okay, so they didn't say that bit. But they did confirm that the latest weirdness meant it was, like, the one time she could have gotten any of her family to actually visit the island. She figured it would have been nice if her parents showed, but she could forgive them. She barely even remembered them -- she'd been too young when they'd died. But to have Joshua not show up?

That was just . . . mean.

So she was up on the roof, staring vaguely over the edge, watching out for people wandering around with their dead loved ones and generally being grumpy. It was probably a really good thing she and Scully hadn't put a trebuchet up here, yet.

Admittedly, if he hadn't been to Fandom, he probably wouldn't have thought it possible. Now, well... It still sounded a bit out there, but he wasn't going to instantly wave it off.

He straightened up and turned to lean against the side. "Okay, so how could you find out for sure?"

Claudia thought that over. "The experiment. I have to go to his lab and do the experiment and find him."

Okay, that was... full of plotholes. "But what if you're wrong and you end up killing yourself?" he asked. "There's got to be a way to figure out if he's alive that doesn't involve blowing yourself up."

Claudia shook her head. "No, no, 'cause I totally know what might happen. I can prepare for that."

"So you've found a way around it? It'd be completely safe?" he checked.

No. No she hadn't.

"Totally. Absolutely no vanishing or exploding on my end."

"Good. You can try it out on me first then," he decided easily. "I might as well make myself useful if I'm tagging along."

"No, you are gonna stand back and keep those wolfy senses trained for campus security."

"I can multitask," he assured her. "Besides, what am I supposed to do if it works and you're off god knows where? I'm not taking up knitting while I wait for you to get your ass back."

"I've always figured crochet was more your style, anyway." Claudia shook her head. "I could always just go by myself. Then you wouldn't have to take up any crafts while you wait."

He raised an eyebrow at her. "No, you're not going alone," he told her. "You need someone to have your back."

"And keep an eye out for campus security," Claudia said cheerfully. "So we're agreed."

"Yeah, we're agreed," he said, holding out his hand.

"Cool. I should have everything ready by . . . next weekend."

"Okay," he nodded. "Anything you need me to do? Are we driving or grabbing a portal? Minnesota's a bit of a drive from here."

"Portal. We drive, we'd just waste the whole weekend on the road."

"Okay, that's what I figured," he said, but well he still wasn't exactly rich. "Maybe there's some last minute promotions."

He had no clue when he'd become responsible. Ew.

"I've been saving up? I can probably spot you some of it."

He made a face and there went that stupid pride thing. "No, I can manage it. It's fine."

"No, seriously, let me help. You wouldn't even be going if it weren't for me. It's only fair."

"Sure, I'll let you help if you let me test the experiment first," he smirked at her.

Claudia rolled her eyes. "Fine. Pay your own way, then."

Yeah, that probably wasn't going to make him feel better about her doing the experiment.

No, it wasn't, but he wasn't really okay with owing someone money either.

"Stubborn wench," he teased, because obviously this was all her stubbornness' fault.
