Starburst Campfire [Saturday, Late Morning]

Chuck had acquired a talky ten-year-old, somewhere between the time he went to bed on Thursday night, and been woken up on Friday morning with an unending stream of Japanese chatter in his ear.

... And no Gameboy.

They might not understand each other on a linguistic level, but they did have some very similar tastes in food and entertainment, at least. So this wasn't so bad, and they were out near the campfire (unlit, because he didn't trust himself near open flames, let alone himself with a little kid), entertaining him throwing stones to try and knock targets, empty cans and the like, off the logs around the fire pit while trying to encourage him to eat the odd slice of cold pizza for breakfast between rounds.

As if the kid really needed to convince her that much; still, Ariel let him pile up the stones in her hand as she snorted slightly at what Chuck said, because, really, that sort of depended on how you threw them. She smirked at Chuck a little before holding out her hand to the little boy to say that she was probably pretty good and then shifted one of the stones to that hand to get it ready to throw.

It would be just like baseball, from the other week in class, right?

Ariel wound up for the pitch, and the rock sailed no where near the cans, but somewhere in the vague vicinity, finding itself in some brush.

...well, at least it didn't find itself through a cabin window, right?

Ariel was giving the kid a look like yeah, nice going, shortstack; you try hitting the cans when you're used to throwing stuff underwater. Then let's see how you do, but it easily shifted into a much more appreciative expression toward Chuck. She smirked, shrugging a shoulder as though she wouldn't mind at all because, really, he was doing pretty well on the pretty, too, over there.

Awwww. Ariel rather liked the babbling; she thought it was terribly cute, even if it made her feel a little bad because she couldn't exactly babble back. In fact, she wondered if maybe that had more to do with people babbling around her, that they felt they needed to fill in the extra space she left in conversation, but it was much nicer to think that maybe he did it because he was nervous because of the aforementioned prettiness.

And he was really cute that Ariel was thinking it was a darn shame that she hadn't noticed him before. So, she went ahead and tapped the kid on the shoulder to get his attention and, the moment he turned around, she was going to dump all the rocks back into his hand, whether he wanted them back or not.

Because she couldn't pull out her handy dandy pocket notebook with rocks in her hand. She quickly scribbled something down with her pink floofyball pen that was also in her pocket, and then handed it over for Chuck to read.

Hopefully, he could read.

"That's why you look familiar!" it said. "And, no, I took it on purpose. You don't need to be any good at something to still like it, right? And sorry about the writing thing. I can't talk :( So this is the only way I have to communikate, unless you know sign language?"

Yup. Totally adorable, but in that dorky kind of way, but Ariel liked that, too. After all, her best friend was the dorkiest fish under the sea...

And Chuck should feel glad that he still wasn't as dorky as his ten-year-old friend running himself to possible sickness over there...

"Thanks," she had then written, handing it over with a sweet smile. "I'm getting pretty used it it, but, believe me, if I still had my voice, I'd probably be holding up my talking end of things pretty well, too."

Yes, congratulations, Chuck. You beat out a fish and a ten-year-old electronics device.

Ariel smiled a little, shrugging her shoulders, like it was no big deal, like it was something you just kind of got used to. But she did like that, that it added mystery, so she just let the shrug and the smile do all the talking for the moment.
