Cabins Gym area, late Sunday morning

After finally figuring out what was going on, Momoko had rushed back to the dorms to check on her room on Saturday. She was very happy to discover that this year her remote-controlled colouring bug had not come to life and coloured all over her walls again.

While in her room, she'd grabbed the swimsuit she'd somehow forgotten to pack and today tried to sneak from her cabin down to the beach for a nice relaxing day in the sun and surf.

Which didn't happen, because a certain blonde sempai had been lying in wait and Momoko was stuck in the camp gym doing katas instead of swimming. At least Dinah had let her put clothes on over the swimsuit; that would have been just too embarrassing.

"Are you suuuuuure we can't just skip and go to the beach today? It's too hot to exercise! Ooh! Or we can exercise on the beach! That's perfect!"

"As long as you don't challenge her to anything. She plays almost every sport invented, she's been boxing and wrestling since she was young. And she's stronger than me and Miyako combined."

Momoko watched Dinah and for a second wished she could do the movements that well and fast. Then she lost her balance and fell. "Ugh. I need to pay attention to what I'm doing. One more time, for the level twos, please? Then I am totally ready to move to the next exercise."

Dinah did it more slowly, hands extended correctly, kick going out at the right angle, and said, "It depends a lot on starting with the right balance, on the correct foot. You'll get it eventually." She looked over at Momoko, and grinned. "I'll challenge her anyway. Remember, I'm used to Helena slamming me into the mat."

"I know the movements, and they get easier each time? But it's been forever and I still can't seem to do them right." Momoko followed her, this time without falling, but still stuttering. When completed, she dropped her form and reached for her water.

"And if you challenge her, I will totally have an ambulance standing by," Momoko laughed. Kaoru would go easy on Dinah, but she was totally going to get a stern reminder to do so anyway.

Wow, was that a familiar sentiment. "Just work in the now. I know I've gotten better this year, and it seemed like I'd never get it when I started."

"Probably a good idea," Dinah teased. "She's probably better than me. But would she want to train full-out, with someone who has telekinesis?"

Momoko =/= patient.

"Totally!" Momoko rolled her eyes fondly and took another sip of water. "Kaoru loves a challenge most of all. She'd probably lose on purpose a few times at first just to see what you could do."

"Okay, what's next?"

"Now, face me, and we'll spar our way through this, okay?" Dinah grinned, and got into ready position. "We'll go slow-speed. Not connecting much. Let's see if you know what to do now."

Waaah! Momoko's face fell; she hated sparring! Or, well, she hated it when she had to start. She just didn't feel like attacking Dinah!

But, start she did. She aimed her left fist at her friend.

The low punch didn't come close to connecting, but Dinah mirrored it, using her right arm to knock Momoko's to the side. "Now, do the same, when I come back at you--" She slow-punched toward Momoko's right, waiting for her to use the same comeback.

"Right," Momoko nodded. She pushed her arm out to block Dinah's, feeling a slight body memory of the movement as she did and then followed into the next attack. "It is totally weird to be turning simple exercises into actual punches. I mean, I know that's what they're for, but it doesn't seem like it when I'm practicing them."

"What does it feel like then?" Dinah asked, using the high block to push Momoko's arm up as a punch went by her ear, then following it with the low punch toward the sternum. "Just good exercise?"

Block the low punch, move out of the way, but keep within your box, ready for the next move.

"More like learning a new dance. Or pieces of one, I guess. And I can't wait to be able to be done and put them all together so I can just move."

Dinah snickered. "Well, now you're practicing it with a partner. One-two-three, one-two-three," she chanted, speeding up just a little, and then aiming a kick at Momoko's hip that she could hopefully knock down. "And when your body knows it, you can improvise some new steps."

"Waah! No fair, no fair!" She tried setting her arm down to block in what she thought would work, but instinct had her turning away at the same time so the kick's impact sent her off balance and to the ground.

Momoko was laughing. "I don't know all the steps yet, remember?" She held out a hand for Dinah to help her up. "Show me the block for that and I'll tell you a secret!"

"Ooooo. Secret? About what? Or who?" Dinah tugged her upward, using TK to make it easy, then said, "Try to kick me the same way, and I'll show you."

Momoko grinned and took her stance. "About a what and a who!" She kicked. "I found out when Jaime's birthday is."

"Oooo!" Dinah bounced, then re-assumed her stance. "C'mon, kick me! And tell! I've been wanting to know ever since he said he was older than me."

"Then stop bouncing! I can't kick you if you're moving!" Momoko dropped her leg, giggling.

"And he totally needs be punished. It was back in April! Just a few days before yours?" She took a calming breath and sent her leg towards Dinah's hip. "We were totally planning your surprise party on his actual birthday!"

"I'm ready!" Dinah claimed, then huffed even as she stood still. "That sneak. Older than me! Two or three days older! April 21st, or 20th? We so have to get him back for that!"

"I know, right?" Momoko's leg was aimed straight for Dinah.

"The 21st. We totally have to think of something to do."

Dinah brought her arm down and across, taking the kick on the outside of her arm and letting it slide off, downward, redirected and harmless. "Like that. Or you can do Helena's trick... we do. Ooo. Maybe when we visit his family?"

Oh, he was so in for it after that, though.

Momoko let her leg fall and frowned at the easy block. "So I had the right idea, just I moved and lost balance?"

"He so won't be expecting it if we surprise him at home!" And Momoko made another mental note to warn Milagro about her visit. "I ordered his present online so it should be here by then."

"Yup. You can't let your weight fall backward, it's got to be evenly distributed," Dinah counseled. "Try it again, and I'll show you Helena's trick." Except without the part of slamming Momoko face-first into the mat.

"He won't," she said in complete satisfaction. "Ooo. Now I have to think of something." She frowned. "Hmmm. Ideas, ideas, need ideas...."

"Okay," Momoko fell back into position to kick again. "But if I end up face down on the ground, I am totally getting you back."

She swing her leg again. "What kind of gift are you wanting to get him?"

Dinah grabbed her leg at ankle and knee, and held it there, twisting it just a little. "If you see this coming at you fast enough, you can grab it. You're strong enough to pull this off. And then twist, and they end up off their feet, on the mat. Got it?" She grinned, then the grin faded a little into thoughtfulness.

"I don't know. Something... personal," she said, sounding a little shy. "Since I won't be here for Christmas, or anything else after that, probably." To remember her by. "Special."

Momoko nodded. "I can totally see how that would work. Basically flipping them by using their leg? Thank you for not actually doing it!"

She pulled back and reached for her water again, grinning as she tossed a cold bottle to Dinah. "So you're not going to come back and visit ever again? Cutting your high school ties and leaving us all behind? So mean!" Like Momoko would let her escape.

"Something personal. Hmm. Maybe something he can wear? Or something that would remind him of something you enjoy doing together?"
