Main Campfire | Afternoon | Tuesday | July 27

Alex didn't have a damn thing going on today which made it easier to decide to hoof it out to the campfire and take a seat there. Outside meant he could smoke and not get bitched at by cabinmates. Outside meant he could watch people passing by, maybe entertain himself by annoying them. Outside meant not feeling like the walls were closing in.

He was feeling a little better than he had been the past few weeks but that still wasn't anything special. He lit a cigarette and leaned back against one of the logs, glancing up at the overcast sky before looking back around the camp site and wondering when the other shoe would drop. Things had been quiet for too long. It was bound to change.

[Open, of course. Working late at work so entertainment is neeeeeeeeeeded!]

Wesley walked over to the campfire without looking up from the book in his hands - oddly enough, the same book that had spent the weekend as a cranky older British man. When he finally looked up to choose a log to sit on, he saw Alex. "Oh, hello," he said. "Would you believe this isn't even the first time this week that I've come across someone smoking at the campfire?"

Okay, it wasn't the most fascinating thing in the world. Whatever.

"Oh.". Well, how was he supposed to know?

"I believe her name was Ellie, or... Effy, maybe?" he ventured.

"Yes, I believe she said she was from Bristol?"

To Wes' credit, he only fell for that story for a second. It probably showed on his face as soon as he figured out that it was crap, though. He grinned knowingly as if it was obvious.

Wesley smirked a bit himself. "Oh, yes, you're social butterlies," he laughed.

At the moment, outside meant Lindsay had escaped class. That was always a nice feeling.

"You could probably light the campfire with that," she said, indicating the cigarette.

"Yes, I seem to be spending a great deal of time with people lately who are prone to sulking and brooding," he observed.

"And no, I don't have class today," he added, sounding (as only Wes could) actually disappointed about that. "But this campfire proved to be an excellent place to read this past weekend, so I thought I'd come out here. And yourself?"

"Or you're just keeping them all for yourself," Lindsay replied, the grin on her face revealing slight amusement.

Mock-scandalized, Wesley protested, "I resent that accusation! Not all British people are -" He pulled up his sleeve to examine his forearm and promptly modified what he was going to say, "- er, quite this pale."

"Oh, yes, we've all been waiting on the edge of our seats for your return to society," he drawled, having had no clue that Alex had even been hiding from society at all.

"Not sure even chocolate and marshmallows are worth that," Lindsay snickered, taking a seat on one of the logs.

"And I imagine socializing isn't quite at the top of that list?" he guessed, smiling.

Wesley snickered at that. "Oh yes, I can hardly keep from jumping up and down from excitement."

He didn't know why he was being so social and snarky all of a sudden. Probably because Fandom was the first time in years that he'd actually been around peers who didn't automatically hate him as a rule.

"Blast!" he exclaimed, voice dripping with sarcasm. "I suppose I'll just have to gaze from afar."

And that was taking the sarcasm a little too far. He shifted awkwardly.
