Fourth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Morning

By now Jo was acutely aware of just how little time she had left in Fandom, but rather than mope, she'd decided to be proactive about things.

Which was why the floor of the fourth floor common room was (barring enough room to step around them) completely covered in road-maps for every state from Maryland to Nebraska.

She also had her laptop open to several news sites. No reason.

Edmund carefully walked around the maps to hand Jo a cup of coffee before setting his own cup of tea down at the edge of the table. "North or south?"

Jo smiled as she took the coffee. "Thanks. Not sure, there's not really that much difference either way." She gestured at the map. "Mostly depends whether I want to swing though Chicago or Kansas City on the way through."

"Mostly depends on what you find in the news?" he corrected.

Jo did her best to look innocent. "Would you believe me if I said it didn't?"

"Not for a moment. I also wouldn't believe that this is the first time you've been browsing the news this week."

"The second?"

"Third. Maybe."

"Then it's totally the third time." It wasn't.

"Well not now I don't."

"How about fourth then?"

"The number is going to keep creeping up as we go round and round, isn't it?"

"Maybe?" Yes, yes it would.

"Then let's go with 'a lot' and move on to a concerned plea to be careful."

"I can work with that," Jo said. "Besides, I'm not going to go after anything too nasty by myself." Not deliberately, anyway.

"It's what might be lurking that you don't intend to go after that bothers me."

"I'm not going to try anything dumb," Jo assured him. "My mom would murder me if I got killed."

"I have faith in your abilities," Edmund assured her. "Goodness knows you've survived years here and held your own." Plus he'd seen her in action and knew Jo to be quite handy with defending herself. "It's the stories you've told of what might sneak up on you. That," he started, then let his comments stand as they were.

"Yeah." Jo grimaced. "But I'll have Jet with me, and dogs can figure out those things are coming before people can."

"Jet's a good companion, but if you're going to keep doing this, having someone who speaks English and can fire a weapon would be better."

"I'd need someone I trusted for that. Even if it was only once in a while." There was totally an open ended offer there.

He gave a small smile. "I don't know that I can. But a visit one weekend here or there in between classes might be possible."

Jo smiled back. "I can think of worse ways to spend a weekend here or there. Especially since I somehow managed to get accepted to college." She didn't even remember applying.

"You were accepted?" he asked, realising a moment too late that he shouldn't have sounded so surprised. "Why didn't you say?"

"I was still trying to decide if I was going," Jo admitted. "Though the subjects would be useful."

"Well congratulations are in order for being accepted," Edmund insisted. Then he recognised the look on her face. "What subjects would be useful for what?"
