Proto had an actual cookbook out. He was staring at it dubiously, and with a mild expression of confusion, but he had it out, dang it! Of course he didn't recognize a number of ingredients listed on the page he had open, and he wasn't entirely clear on how one properly 'sautéed' things, but he was going to try.

Though... any help would probably be appreciated.

It wasn't like it was unusual for Dolf to go poking around the various common rooms. Certain friends of his would have actually called it typical.

He poked his head into the room accordingly. "Hi," he said, easily, and slipped into the room properly. "What are you doing?"

Guy, book, food. It deserved clarification.

"Attempting to follow a recipe," Proto scowled. It apparently wasn't going all that well.

"It doesn't look like a recipe yet," said Dolf, because unsolicited opinions were his thing. He walked closer, peering over at the book.

"It doesn't?" Proto leaned over the book to examine the page more closely (http://www.grouprecipes.com/45645/tenderloin-with-sauteed-mushrooms.html). "What is a recipe supposed to look like?"

Dolf blinked at him, and his looking back and forth, and his-- ... he blushed. "I mean the food," he said, hastily. "Doesn't look like you have made anything yet."

"Oh." Proto grinned. "Good eye. I'm still trying to figure this part out." He tapped the book in frustration.

"Which part?"

Dolf didn't particularly want to admit that his English wasn't good enough for him to identify half the ingredients yet. He leaned over a little more, squinting at the words, trying to make sense of it all.

"All of it, really," Proto admitted. "I'm... not really all that good with recipes." Mostly because he'd never used one before.

"Got any tips?"

"Make sure you have everything on the recipe?" Dolf offered, helpfully. "My mom cooked."

"Mine did too," Proto allowed. But... that had been a long time ago.

"I've got most of it?"

"...and start with one," he added, pointing on the book.

Yes. Very helpful, that.

Proto chuckled. "Thanks. I think I'll go with that."

Dolf shrugged. "And if that does not work," he said, "Just put the meat over a fire and done."

"Now that I've actually got some experience with," Proto responded, laughing outright.

"It seems simpler," Dolf added. "And if you're hungry..." You'll eat anything.

"True enough. I'm just... trying something different, you know?" He had a girlfriend he wanted to impress.

Dolf shot him a look. Right. Okay then. "What's so hard about the recipe? It's just steps."

"Have you ever sauteed anything before?" Proto asked.

Really, that confused look in Dolf's eyes should say everything, shouldn't it?

"Yeah. That's what's hard." Proto sounded amused.

"But it says how in the recipe?" Dolf attempted. Don't take away his hope, dammit.

"Unfortunately not. Apparently you're just supposed to know."

There was a short pause.

"I have a dictionary," Dolf volunteered.

"I'll remember that for next time. Fortunately someone explained it to me. It's apparently a fancy word for frying things. With butter."

Dolf stared. "Isn't that how frying works?"
