The Gardens, Mid-Afternoon

Cassidy had given up on dressing like a Queen today and her mother had laughed at her about it with great affection. After breakfast and Devra had visited some of her teachers, she had met her daughter at the gardens as asked.

"And this is where I spend a lot of my time, and no I promise it's not all of my time, but they're such nice gardens, Mother. I love working in them and I keep making all kinds of friends or having nice discussions when I'm here..."

Devra couldn't help but laugh softly at Elle's surprise. "I take it that was a surprise." She was speaking to Elle but looking at her daughter.

Cassidy blushed. "I may have forgotten to ask her," she admitted ducking her head.

"It's okay, though," Elle said quickly. "I don't mind. I just... isn't that kind of uncommon? To have someone like me in your Court?"

Cassidy gave her a confused glance. "Someone like you? You mean someone kind and capable and protective of the people she cares about." She looked at her mother. "Mother? Isn't that what courts are usually made of?"

"I meant someone who doesn't wear a Jewel," Elle said. "Someone who has an ability like mine. Someone who isn't... normal."

Devra gave the other girl a gentle smile. "What some people may call normal, others call something different. You don't have to wear a Jewel to be an asset to someone. Cassidy seems to think you are important enough to be Court, but in the end, it is always by choice that someone serves." She put an arm around her daughter. "Cassidy is still learning."

"It isn't that I don't want to serve," Elle said, surprised to find it true. "It's just that I'm not even from your world. I thought a Court had to be made up of people like Cassidy."
