Magic Reserves & Support Services, Wednesday Afternoon

Unlike last week's meeting with its healthy offers, today's snacks were a tribute to comfort food. Pastries and hot chocolate were well-represented, though there were some fruits and teas, too. "Good to see we managed to survive another Parents' Weekend without something dreadful happening to the island. Or because of it, as the case may be." Trufax, Karla lived in fear of the day something decided to invade while her family was around. "While we definitely want to give everyone a chance to talk about the weekend, we'd also like to focus on something else."

If for no other reason than because people might be all PW'd out by now.

"One of the best parts about coming to Fandom is that there's always someone out there with a different viewpoint. Sometimes it's hard to accept or find common ground--" and Karla was just going to not look at anyone right there, "--but as long as the conversation stays civil and polite, there's no reason that dissimilar viewpoints have to lead to anger or hurt feelings. In fact, different experiences can lead to something very useful and important: new ideas. Synthesis between several different views, leading to something new and interesting. We all have to learn to think outside the our personal boxes."

"That leads us to today's activity." From behind the leaders, Karla picked up a big cardboard box and spilled the contents out onto the end of the table. Out spilled several lengths of cork, candlestubs, and several boxes of tacks. "Form little groups and decide how to affix your lighted candle to the cork wall, without letting any of the candlewax drip onto the ground below. The only materials you can work with are your candle, your box of tacks, and whatever powers and ingenuity your group can lay claim to."

"You may use whatever knowledge or gifts you possess to light the candle," Raven said. She had to wonder if teleporting it to a volcano would count or not. "But it must be lit when you affix it to the corkboard."'

"But don't burn yourself," Tara winced, because ow. "And...like Karla said, if you need to talk about your guests, we're all here."

Alexander rubbed the back of his neck a little, not really having much of an appetite with the topic at hand. The irony of who was touting them to think outside their own personal boxes and the encouragement to use 'gifts,' as they called them, for something as little as lighting a candle to no real end except doing it made him wonder yet again if this was something he really wanted to be a part of.

Now, if they had to light the candle to get into a dungeon so they could get a secret item that would help serve some other random important task, that would be another story....

Still, perhaps, then, what Alexander decided to strive to do, was figure out the solution without the easy solution of using magic.

Raven had managed to recover from her fit of pique about Rumor Gal and was in a much better mood today, really.

Except for having Vampire Issues on the mind thanks to talking to Scully the night before. Stupid vampires.

That was me on Saturday.

Oh, my infinitely palpable sense of rejection, let me show you how pathetic it was.

Tara knew the solution, but she was willing to help a group that just needed a hand.

Don't ask her to cheat and give away the answer, though.

Dolf was actually having a Moment with the candle, or rather, thinking about the candle, and the tacks, and how this was really supposed to go.

He was starting to have Doubts about this endeavour, though he did wind up decorating a candle with some tacks while no one was watching. Shush.

Tara would appreciate that dance, actually.

Maladicta seemed okay, and she'd met Kennedy's watcher without anything going wrong. So life was good. She just wanted to see dancing.

Eating? Check. Merriness? Pending. Weather? Zatanna didn't mind it.

She was more interested in deciding which would be the less unfair way to do the whole candle trick. Maybe she shouldn't use her magic? But Karla had said they could so...well, she would decide when she got to do it.

Now, Zatanna wasn't a prideful person, but someone that tended to answer 'with magic' to every question as how something would or should be done, it was easy to get a lot of hot air in her head.

She was trying to find a way to do the trick without magic though. The little flame dancing on her index finger was as much as she thought it would be fair, since she didn't know how else she was supposed to light the candle.

Teamwork would be much appreciated~

Alex helped herself to a pastry and hot chocolate (it was her weakness, after all). Sure, her favorite time of year was the summer but she didn't really mind the fall -- if only because the leaves changed colors.

It was pretty, okay?

Cally could handle eating and drinking; calm would have to substitute for merry as she availed herself of hot chocolate and a raspberry-filled pastry.

As for the weather, it would hardly be fair to complain when she still hadn't trekked into town to buy herself a jacket yet.

"If any of you encountered a very nosy overly enthusiastic slightly hyper guy who thought it was awesome to meet you, and he pestered you or your family, I apologize. So much." Scully rubbed her forehead from a phantom headache. "The only thing my brother didn't do this weekend was get bit by a gremlin."

Kennedy was hanging around per usual, of course, shamelessly taking advantage of the snacks and mostly just observing to see how everyone was going to pull this off.

She was paging through an online newspaper on her phone as she nibbled, past an article about the need for better odor control in the Sunnydale junkyards, because whatever. Who cared about that?

He might have done it when no one was watching, but that hardly hid the fact that he ended up holding a tack-decorated candle. Cally looked at it from a few feet away for a moment before wandering over.

"I'm not sure about that pattern, but it seems to me that putting tacks in the candle might be a solution to stopping the wax from dripping -- if you were to build up a sort of lip around the top."

Dolf blinked up at her. So maybe he'd started drifting off just a little bit. Leonardo wasn't far from his mind, after all. "I guess?" he said, squinting. "But there would still be holes to drip in."

"Then you build another ring below it, with the tacks shifted to cover where the top set don't." There was still something missing there, Cally knew: how would you tack a candle up when the candle itself is thicker than the tacks?

"We'd also have to burn it," Dolf pointed out, pointing at the tip. "...Do you have matches?" Pleading look: on. "I don't even know why," he muttered.

It was probably undermining his fellow leaders' authority, but still.

Apologetic wince: also on. "I haven't. I suppose it's a test of our creativity, but unless you're hiding secret fire-starting powers, I'm not sure how we're supposed to accomplish that part."

"No powers," he said, and sighed. "Maybe find some stone...?"

He used to always have a little bit of flint around, or a stick, or something.
