Today, the Reserves met outside. The leaders figured that people might need a little fresh air and the chance to move around a bit. There was the traditional table of moddable snacks and beverages for anyone to partake of. Assuming they had the appetite.

"Today, we're going to be talking about how to deal with an invisible enemy," Karla said, because they enjoyed being topical. "Of all the senses we have, most of us rely far too heavily on out sense of sight. That hinders us greatly when it comes to enemies that are invisible, or when it comes to fighting in the dark or when we're fighting enemies from ambush."

"Or when you battle disease, that some might have given you purposefully," Dolf said quietly. He hadn't quite managed to disassociate any of this from the Crimson Death since Cally's message yesterday. "There are many kinds of enemies that can't be seen, and not all of them are things you can hit. Or they might be things you can see, but that creep in when you least expect it, take someone and then go." Experience with that? Never. "But there are ways to deal with this. Keeping watch, and even just knowing."

"From a martial perspective, it's important to utilize your other senses as much as you can, to avoid letting a lack of a visible opponent become a handicap," Wesley added. "In an ordinary fight, one might not even realize all the clues provided to you by simply listening and being present in your physical space -- but when you're no longer able to see what you're fighting, it becomes that much more imperative to take advantage of these things."

Off to the side, there were basketballs and strips of cloth set out. "For martial and support," Wesley continued, "we'd like you to pair up and take turns approaching one another. One of you should wear the blindfold and try to -- gently -- toss the basketball at the other, using the rest of your senses to the best of your ability to try to locate them, while the other tries to be as quiet as possible. You can trade roles when you're finished."

"For magic," Karla added, "we're going to do the same thing, only use power to try to deflect or shield against the ball while blindfolded. If your powers don't work that way, we can talk about other ways to practice using your gifts while unable to see."

After all the candy and sugary treats devoured when most of the island's inhabitants were transformed into children, Raven was very careful to provide a lot of healthy snacks for this meeting of the Reserves. There were fruits and veggies and whole grain goodness, but in the end she'd caved enough to provide some sweets as well.

"We are celebrating the end of the semester," Raven said to begin the meeting. "We have survived not only our classes, but everything that Fandom -- and our own worlds -- have had to throw at us. We thought we would take this time to take a break from the stress of finals and relax among friends, though perhaps we can also speak of what we have faced over the past several months and what we learned from it, about ourselves and our companions and our abilities."

"I think the most important thing I learned," Tara began, "and this might sound cheesy, is -- trust yourself and trust your friends. I've seen people do amazing things. Things they, they would have sworn they couldn't do if you'd asked. But stress people out enough, and bam. Magic happens. Not just literal magic, either."

"But there are always consequences to your actions," Karla added, sounding a little subdued. "And those consequences can have much further-reaching effects than what you might expect. Be careful of those around you, especially your friends. Just because they are likely to forgive you doesn't mean you have the right to treat them poorly, even for the sake of the 'greater good.'"

"Sometimes you owe your friends more than that," Dolf piped up. "Sometimes the 'greater good' is your friends, and sometimes you need to just look out for them to get the right things done." Not that he had any idea what Karla might have been referring to, but it had been his experience. "So we want to talk about it, and help make this part of the preserve a nicer place for today. Just to talk about the things we have done this year, and what they mean. Because everything means something, and everything we fight for is something important."

The boy was really ridiculously earnest.

"For my part, I have learned much the same as Tara has said," Raven said. "No matter how frightening something is, no matter how ashamed you are of something that is happening to you, you should not keep it to yourself and deal with it alone. The friendships forged in Fandom are strong, and our unique abilities and upbringings may bring valued insight into one another's problems. None of us are alone here."

She smiled and looked around at each of the students attending the meeting. "And if you have any words of advice for new students that will be arriving in Fandom, we would like to hear those as well."

It wasn't Hawaii, but it was in the mid-50s today, so Magical/Support reserves was meeting outside to make the best of the warming temperatures. There was a table of the usual snacks, including quite a few lovely cakes with various tasty frostings (with all organic ingredients, of course, since Raven had procured them).

Unfortunately, the cakes had drawn some attention in the form of gremlins who were in search of a sweet treat. Said gremlins also didn't care about long-winded speeches, so when Raven stepped forward to begin to speak on the day's topic, a piece of cake suddenly came flying through the air right at her head.

Raven frowned indignantly as she scrubbed frosting from her cheek. "That was not very nice," she scolded.

"Really not," Tara agreed, frowning hard at the space the cake had come from. "Guys, if you don't want to come to the meeting, you don't have to, but you shouldn't act like preschoolers while somebody is --"

And that was where she got cut off by a gooey slice of chocolate cake splatting against her chin. Apparently, the gremlins didn't like lectures any more than they liked long-winded speeches.

"Stop that!" Dolf roared, grabbing at his belt for his bread knife and... finding he hadn't brought it this time. Stupid school weapons locker rules-- "Stop it now or I will stop you--"

Splat.

Karla, still slightly off-kilter from her dream last night looked from the gremlins to her leaders and back. Clearly, words weren't going to work. All right, fine. Fire with fire, then. Taking what was left from her plate--what? she'd been hungry!--she threw it back at the gremlin who'd flung cake at Dolf.

Her victory was short-lived as two more slices when flying towards her face. And then, the air was full of flung cake and frosting, lobbed at anyone and everyone.

Cake fight!

The meeting area was set up a little strangely today. Strings stretched between two trees, criss-crossing and forming a giant spider web, and a closer look would reveal tiny bells attached to the strings. A large patch of ground nearby had been covered with a swath of red-orange cloth about 15 yards across, and scattered about it were flat stones that were large enough for one person to stand upon, perhaps two if you were cozy with one another. There were red streamers dangling down from the trees overhead as well, and a pile of small red beanbags off to one side. But that didn't mean there wasn't a table full of food.

"Today we thought we'd try something different," Raven began the meeting. "Often times we must face physical hazards when attempting to find an object we require or reach a place we must get to. We've tried to replicate two examples. The first is this web, which is home to a deadly giant spider. You must get through the web without making the bells on the strings ring, for that will attract the spider to you." She paused a moment, then added, "There is not really a giant spider, that is only pretend." Just in case anyone was wondering.

She gestured to the red cloth on the ground. "This is a river of lava that you must cross, and the streamers represent lava that is pouring down from the above. You may jump from stone to stone to cross, but if you are touched by a streamer, it will make you fall. But as it is only pretend, you may go back and try again." Raven picked up one of the red bean bags and added, "You may also throw these 'lava rocks' at your friends as they attempt to cross to make it more difficult, if you wish."

"Or," Tara added hastily, "you can go through either obstacle in pairs and help each other." She didn't like the idea of making it harder on purpose. "Just ... try not to get fake-killed before you get to the other side."

"Magic or ingenuity can get you through," Karla said, idly tossing a beanbag from hand to hand. She had the strangest desire to hurl it at someone while yelling 'Fireball.' Go figure. "The important thing is to keep trying. Who knows when the island will throw something weird at us next?"

She looked at the small pine tree that was raining glitter on her shoes. "Besides this, I mean."

They made a good point. Dolf smiled at everyone there, his hands in his pockets, though he was aching to give the set-up a try himself. "You never know when learning how to do these things will be useful," he added. "So try doing it again if you're done. It might save you later, and teach you to be careful when it matters. It's not just a game, though we'll hope you have fun. Go!"

Raven glanced up at the glitter with a puzzled look on her face. "That does not count as lava," she clarified.

The Reserves were kind of fidgety today. Karla, at least, was filled with a kind of nervous energy that made it hard to keep still. This would be a nice break from her current state of constant near-exhaustion, if it hadn't come with all kinds of, well, emotional distractions. The kind that made it hard to concentrate.

Unlike last week's meeting with its healthy offers, today's snacks were a tribute to comfort food. Pastries and hot chocolate were well-represented, though there were some fruits and teas, too. "Good to see we managed to survive another Parents' Weekend without something dreadful happening to the island. Or because of it, as the case may be." Trufax, Karla lived in fear of the day something decided to invade while her family was around. "While we definitely want to give everyone a chance to talk about the weekend, we'd also like to focus on something else."

If for no other reason than because people might be all PW'd out by now.

"One of the best parts about coming to Fandom is that there's always someone out there with a different viewpoint. Sometimes it's hard to accept or find common ground--" and Karla was just going to not look at anyone right there, "--but as long as the conversation stays civil and polite, there's no reason that dissimilar viewpoints have to lead to anger or hurt feelings. In fact, different experiences can lead to something very useful and important: new ideas. Synthesis between several different views, leading to something new and interesting. We all have to learn to think outside the our personal boxes."

"That leads us to today's activity." From behind the leaders, Karla picked up a big cardboard box and spilled the contents out onto the end of the table. Out spilled several lengths of cork, candlestubs, and several boxes of tacks. "Form little groups and decide how to affix your lighted candle to the cork wall, without letting any of the candlewax drip onto the ground below. The only materials you can work with are your candle, your box of tacks, and whatever powers and ingenuity your group can lay claim to."

"You may use whatever knowledge or gifts you possess to light the candle," Raven said. She had to wonder if teleporting it to a volcano would count or not. "But it must be lit when you affix it to the corkboard."'

"But don't burn yourself," Tara winced, because ow. "And...like Karla said, if you need to talk about your guests, we're all here."

It was Raven's turn again to lead the meeting, and while she was trying very hard not to dwell on last week (with the exception of crying on Karla's shoulder last night), she couldn't help but let it guide her toward a topic for the day. She hadn't let it get in the way of provided the usual assortment of snacks, though when Raven was in charge they leaned heavily toward fruits and veggies, and water and lemonade and tea rather than soda.

"Many of us here have remarkable gifts," she began, "but they have taken time to learn to use them, and we must always be on our guard to use them wisely. There may be times beyond our control, however, when our powers do not work correctly, which could lead to unintended results. In Fandom, this is often a humorous thing, thankfully, but that is not always the case. Sometimes there may be dangerous consequences."

"For example," Tara put in with a bit of a wince, "You m-might totally and completely by accident make a couple dozen people invisible. N-nobody got hurt when that happened, but that was really just luck. It can take a long time to forgive yourself for something like that. It can even tempt you to just give up."

"It's not just instances where our powers don't work right that can lead to unintended consequences," Karla added. "We have a responsibility to think things through. Just because we have the ability to do something, should we? When do we cross the line between helpful and hubris?"

"Have you ever had an instance where your gifts did not work as you anticipated, or you lost control of them?" Raven finished up. "How did you deal with this? And for the Support Reserves members with us today, what could you do to help someone so stricken to regain control or undo what they had done?"

"Or," Francine added, "How do you deal when there's nothing you can do to help?"

When the magic and support reservists showed up to the preserve this afternoon, instead of four girls standing around in front of a table full of food, they'd find four girls on a white sheet spread out on the grass, in a large, twisted pile of arms and legs and assorted other parts.

One of those parts was Francine's face, which was, thankfully, free enough of the human spaghetti-monster that she could say: "Hi, guys! Don't worry, we're fine!"

She'd say and not doing anything dirty but she was Francine and the concept of whose elbow is that and what is it doing there had only just occurred to her. With an eep. That she was trying hard to suppress, not joke about. "We're just demonstrating a teambuilding exercise!"

Yes. That was what the kids were calling it these days.

"It's a game called Twister, for those of you who don't know it, but the object here isn't to be the last person upright when everybody else falls: it's to support your teammates so everybody can keep going for as long as possible, whether that's with magic or just a nice strong shoulder to lean on."

Tara was flushed as she pried herself loose enough to talk. The position she'd been wedged into had given her a good chance at guessing not just the other girls' bra sizes, but also whether they favored underwires or padding. "If you haven't played before," she observed, "it really helps to be flexible and, uh, not too shy about contact."

She was working on that part. Really.

Raven was utterly convinced now that Earth games were created by the insane. That was the only possible explanation for this "Twister." Either that or it had to belong in 'Dite's shop. "It might also be considered good practice on control for those of you whose powers are based on or intensified by touch," she added.

She was really hoping that no one in the pile started to daydream about, say, Kennedy or Katchoo, or she was going to get a mindful of it.

If Karla was unusually silent, it might have had something to do with her Craft being the major factor in the pile of girls not being a collapsed pile of girls. Or maybe the fact that the answer to Tara's guessing game for most of them was 'Padding? Ahahaahahahaha.'

The usual table of baked goods and refreshments was available for the reserves meeting, with plenty of ice to keep the drinks cool in the heat of the afternoon. It was Raven's turn again to lead the meeting, and she was trying not to flail. She was never going to be used to public speaking. And yes, she'd changed clothes since leaving 'Dite's, thank you very much.

"Last year we had a discussion about recognizing when people were not themselves," she began, "but in light of this past Friday, and because we have many new people here now, I thought it would be acceptable to speak on this topic again." Without love spells this time, please.

"Fandom has many ways of affecting us," Raven went on, "and it is often said that the island has a whimsical sense of humor. People have spontaneously changed sex for a day, or turned into children or animals, or become another person entirely, or just...not been themselves. If you have not experienced these things yet, you likely soon will, or you will observe your friends being thus transformed. While it may be amusing to watch, if something has altered your friend's personality, it is advisable to keep an eye on them so they do not do something they will later regret." No, her eyes totally weren't darting toward Karla when she said that, and she definitely wasn't blushing.

"And -- if they're going to do it no matter what you say?" Tara put in with a blush of her own, thinking of her turn as a chanteuse, "Keep an eye on them, and be reassuring afterwards. Remind them it happens to everybody and not that many people saw whatever it is that they did. Unless it's physically dangerous. Then you have to stop them."

"I personally would consider mental scarring to fall into that category," Emmett added. Not blushing, just... looking mentally scarred. "And yet another afterwards option would be What Happens When Hell Freezes Over Stays In Hell, aka looking your friend straight in the eye, saying "I have no idea what you're talking about" and passing them an ice cream sundae."

Karla nodded. "And when it comes to dealing with the consequences of their--or your--actions, it's important to remember that people might literally have not been in their right minds. It may be hard to be forgiving or just in the aftermath, but, most times, people have no idea anything is happening or different until whatever weirdness has struck has ended. Until then, they are acting 'normal' by the standards of that new reality, and that new reality. You have to understand that whatever actions or behaviors they displayed during that time, they have very little to do with how the person thinks, feels, or acts normally, and take that into account when you decide how to respond in the aftermath."

"Do you have any abilities that might be useful in detecting if someone is not themselves, such as reading an aura and seeing it has changed?" Raven finished. "Or if their form has been entirely altered, would you be able to sense their true self? What could you do to restrain someone who is acting out of character?"

There were two tables at the front of the meeting today. The first held the requisite snacks and drinks that people expected from their meetings, but the second was covered in skeins of silk, hollow wooden frames, a few small baskets of dried plants, some salt, candles, incense, and a few books.

"Kiss kiss and thanks for coming," Karla greeted when it looked like everyone had assembled. "In the past, we've talked about the different kinds of magic there are. My Craft differs from Tara's magic which differs from Raven's powers. But even a single witch or magic user may need many tools to cast the spells they know. Some spells can be accomplished with a thought or by will alone, others may need somatic and verbal components to be spoken aloud or specific hand gestures. And others still need materials. Again, because there are so many different kinds of magic, what materials are needed for a spell or ritual will vary from person to person and spell to spell--" she gestured to the second table "--but oftentimes, there is a bit of overlap."

"At home," Tara added, "you need ingredients for just about any spell, unless you, um, kind of go overboard with power. But that'll just drain you. And besides" -- she shrugged -- "most burning herbs smell kind of pretty. Helps you focus while you're chanting."

"Incense and candles also are sometimes a helpful aid for meditation," Raven said, "which can aid in focusing your powers, as can something like my chakra." She touched her fingertips to the red jewel on her forehead, then continued. "My healing gifts do not require any sort of spell components, but other spells I know do need some sort of object to focus them on, an item for the magics to be contained within." She swept her hair back so that the glow of her earrings could be seen. "These were originally simple gold earrings, but I have attached a spell of light to them. For the spell to be most effective, they had to be of pure gold and finely crafted. The better the quality of the item, the more powerful the spell."

"It's important to learn and understand some basic spell components," Karla continued. "On the one hand, if we're under attack and need to cast a spell, knowing what items are at hand will give you a better idea of what spells can be cast. Knowing the difference between rosemary and rue might be vital, especially if the magic user casting the spell can't be with you when you're collecting the materials for the spell. And, should you ever be in a position to observe an enemy spellcaster, it's good to know a little bit about what they're doing, too. Will knocking the candle over interrupt the spell or just alert the caster to your presence? If you scuff the summoning circle, will you send the evil demon back to its hell dimension or just let it loose on Fandom?"

These were some pretty important questions, okay? No one wanted to deal with ravening demons on the loose.

"So today, we're going to spend some time talking about some of the material components to our spells. Then, we're going to talk about where to find those components and the best ways to interfere with spells that rely on them."

"They kept telling me I'm not allowed to say that you'd find the stuff I use to make magic at 'Dite's," Emmett added with a grin. "So this is me not saying that, and just shutting up and listening this week."

Today, there was something missing. Something whose absence made everything about this meeting of the Magic Slash Support Reserves desperately, desperately wrong.

No, not everybody with magic powers; nobody was invisible today. This was so much worse: the table next to the leaders held NO FOOD! It held nothing but a pile of scarves, in fact.

"Now, now, nobody panic," Emmett called out, raising his hands in a slightly defensive movement just in case they were really as hungry as they looked. "The goodies are here. They're just behind us." He stepped aside to point to a spot a good hundred feet back, where another table could be spotted. "You guys did really well with helping each other out when things went kabloonkie last week, so this week, we're gonna build on that with a teamwork and communication exercise. Which I'd be the first to call lametastic under other circumstances, but guys, guys. There's cupcakes at the end of it!"

"So." He pointed to the open area of grass between the food and the group leaders. "Today? That grass is lava. There's a path through it marked out in duct tape, but you can't step off or bye-bye designer footwear which by the way I hope you didn't wear. Go to the end of the path, grab yourself a cupcake for you and one for your partner, and then make your way back! Easy like peas!"

"Well, maybe not quite that easy," Karla said, grinning a bit. "See, the reason you need a partner is because you're going to be blindfolded." One of the scarves on the table floated over to her and she held it up for them to see. "Trust and communication, remember? You're going to have to trust your partner to get you to the cupcakes, without having you step in lava, or in any of the other ingenious traps we've set about the course." The expression Karla was wearing suggested that she was looking forward to seeing them maneuver said traps.

"The easiest way to do this is via verbal communication, of course, but be creative if you can. Pair up with a telepath and have them look through your eyes or attempt to broadcast your thoughts, especially if you're unused to telepathic communication. Use magic to somehow guide your partner through--and then don't use any for yourself. Levitate someone over the lava if they're about to fall in. Be creative and go beyond your comfort zone. Nothing is against the rules, as long as you have fun."

In theory, Tara knew everyone who came to a Reserves meeting was her friend. That theory wasn't helping her case of the jitters about leading the meeting as much as she'd like. She couldn't look at the group as a whole, or at Kennedy, or at Karla, Raven and Emmett; she was sure she'd completely lose the ability to speak if she did. She settled for glancing between her notecards and a neutral point on the ground a few feet from the altar she stood beside as she spoke, talking slowly and softly so as to minimize the chance she would stutter.

Stuttering should have been the least of her worries. )

Raven was just a little nervous to start the reserves meeting. She'd gotten more used to speaking up in class, but talking in front of a group of people who were all looking at her was a different story. A gentle nudge from Karla had been necessary to get her to step forward and begin to speak.

"Many of us here -- not all, I know -- prefer to avoid the fighting for our own reasons," Raven said. "For instance, I am a pacifist, and as an empath, the emotions that arise during combat are often very uncomfortable for me. I will deal with such things when I must heal someone, but I do not belong in the front lines of combat.

"But for those who are engaged in a fight, whether magically or physically, it is best not to do so blindly. When something invades Fandom, we must find out everything about it so that we know how to best repel the attack, and that is where we can provide much needed support. Some of us have abilities to use various forms of divination, be it tarot cards or crystal balls or prophetic dreams. Others are skilled with a computer or are more at home with books, and may have access to information that the rest of us do not.

"Today we would like to talk about what abilities, either magical or mundane, each of us have for researching threats to Fandom. For instance, I sometimes have prophetic dreams of the future, but I know very little about computers. I am just beginning to learn to use one." Just wait 'til she found Rumor Gal fanfic.

Thanks to baking class today, there were plenty of cupcakes to go around for anyone who showed up today. They were also very...interestingly decorated, but fairly heavy on the frosting, so all was well. There were also assorted pastries and things from J,GoB in case anyone got tried of cupcakes and wanted something else.

When everyone was more or less assembled and had gotten something to snack on, Karla stepped forward. "Welcome to the first ever meeting of the combined Magic and Support Reserves. I'm Karla and this is Tara, for Magic; Emmett, for Support; and Raven, who's liaising for both because she's just awesome that way." Karla smiled at the other leaders and turned back to the group. Although it wasn't snowing or raining or terribly cold outside, it was still uncomfortable enough that the girls thought it best to stay inside this week.

"We've spent a great deal of time preparing ourselves for just about everything this place could throw at us," Morgana said once everyone was settled in with their food. "Monsters, gremlins, animal transformations, we've covered it all. But last week's vacation brought up a new thought: what if disaster strikes while we're not in Fandom? The school provides us with many opportunities to travel, usually to far away places that few of us have been before. What if there was a natural disaster, or what if something that wanted to attack us decided to strike us elsewhere, while we're away from the safety of the island? Are there things we should do to prepare before school trips, or should we take these vacations as a time to relax and not worry, and leave safety measures to others?"

Early in the afternoon, Morgana came downstairs and stuck a note up for anyone looking for the Support Services meeting:

Support Services is

There was a plate of cookies beneath the note, as that seemed like a requisite gesture after all this time. With that done, Morgana went back upstairs to attempt to finish packing. She was going to end up wearing the same clothes every day at the rate she was going.

In the lobby (because it's cold out there) but out of the way of the ticket-sales, there was an entire table full of pink-frosted valentine cupcakes and a girl with pink frosting on her nose, but those two facts were utterly unconnected.

Lo, there was a sign, and the sign read:

Support Services Meeting
Called On Account of Vanilla

Regular meetings will resume next week.
Go hit the Club Fair!

NOTE: If you have chocolate spots,
we've got your cure!
You can either go out in the rain
or have some vanilla cream horns.
We know which we would pick.

On the table below the sign, there were indeed several large bakery boxes of vanilla cream horns. (And some oatmeal-vanilla hand lotion for the calorie-conscious.)

If it looked like there were a lot more cookies and treats around this week than usual, well, that was because there were. The girls figured everyone deserved a bit of a reward after last weekend.

"We seem to have survived the attack of gremlins very well, and Francine and I would like to thank all of you who came and offered support over the weekend," Morgana said. "Caritas might not have been the ideal location we imagined finding ourselves in, but I think we managed well enough. We thought we'd take this week to talk about how things went for all of you. Did you learn anything? Is there something that worked or didn't work that we should remember in the future? For example, I think having places for people to lie down to rest might be a good idea." Whether or not they could get certain people to lie down was another issue entirely, but at least the option would be there. "What else can we take from this experience?"

Look, it's cold out there and there's a fuzzy bunny sitting on the counter who doesn't need to make the trip to the Perk again. The adventure to retrieve the large white chocolate mocha sitting next to her was chilly enough.

It's all about the bunny. Yes. Also about cookies. Come on, it's Francine.

Who could be found near the stove with a container of Quaker Oats in her hand and a smile on her face. Mostly because there was also a tray of chocolate cookies next to her.

"Okay so, I think everybody's had a chance to see that part of keeping Fandom running is keeping people happy, and nothing keeps people happy like cookies." Please. Try to argue that with her. "But not all of us know how to bake. And that's okay. You can learn, and I'd be happy to help teach people sometime, but there are also cookies you can make without ever turning on the oven!" She wasn't looking directly at anyone when she said that. Really. "These are no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies, and these are rice krispy treats. You have to use the stove or the microwave to melt some of the ingredients, but this baby--" She tapped the oven. "Can stay cold."

"So. No-bake cookies. Just as tasty, easy to make, slightly less chance of burning the dorms down. Also, fun!" If sticky.
