The Roof, Saturday Evening

Really, there were probably a hundred-odd other things that Jono could be doing right now to make better use of his time. He was going on that break trip, and so there was packing to be done, after all. But why pack, when procrastination was so much more appealing?

He could have brought his guitar up to the roof, but that had seemed a bit too much like effort for him this evening, too. Instead of effort, he'd made his way up to the roof with a book (Vonnegut) and a portable CD player (playing Pearl Jam), and he was taking advantage of the last few daylight hours to lose himself in a bit of both.

[Open roof, open post! I haven't been out nearly enough this week, poo.]

Yei was on an Adventure!

Her tail was up, her ears were forward pointing and her whiskers were all intent. She was very very very serious about her adventure as she bounced-padded-wriggled her way up the stairs. Up and up and up and where would she end up?

... There was a door. She could smell-see-hear the outside on the other half of it.

It would not defeat her! Never!

She turned her head and mewed imperiously. Imploringly. Adorably.

Hinata could not possibly be blamed for laughing as she pushed the door open for her cat, really.

Yei paraded through the door like a tiny Queen, Hinata following behind, amusement on her face.

Air! Place she didn't see that often! And omigodwasthataperson?!?!?! Yei had to go explore!

HELLO PERSON! That was a teeny kitten sniffing around your feet now. Just for you.

While Hinata hung back a little and bit her lip to keep from laughing out loud.

Heeeeey! Was the person talking to her? WAS HE? HI PERSON, HI!

To show just how utterly delighted she was, she was going to rub her head against his ankle. Like so. And purr adorably. And he didn't really mind her doing that, did he?

She mewed up at him. He had a funny voice, did he know? It was weird for her to hear, but he sounded okay! HI! She was going to just plant her front paws on his leg and see what she could see. He had pants. Very good.

Maybe she could knead them? Yes? No? Purring time was now! Hihihihihi!

Hinata, meanwhile, was going to suffocate with the effort of keeping her giggles down. She should interrupt and she knew it--but...

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Her claws were claws of love and affection and sunshine!

And more purring. He was pointing at her! That meant he loved her! Right? Right?

Rightrightright!?!?!

Hinata wandered over, her eyes all but glowing with laughter. "I would say I'm hers," she said, lightly. Trying not to laugh. "Her name is Yei. She is very... ... affectionate."

Yes. He had probably figured that one out.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
The purring intensified until there was far more noise coming from a teeny kitten like Yei than should've been possible. Haaappy. So haaappy. He could keep doing that? She was going to try and nudge that hand with her head and look even cuter!

And, see, while she was distracted? She wasn't clawing his pants to bits! Win-win!

"I can--remove her," Hinata said, a bit tentatively. "If you d-do not wish her to bother you."

In which case Yei was going to be sad and pathetic and plaintive, but that was something she could handle.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, kitten! Kitten who was going to be in dire threat of falling over if she didn't quit paying so little attention to her footing and so much attention to her purring and his hand. Snuggles! He was a good person! Could she keep him?

"She's not--shy," Hinata said, and in a way it was a bit embarrassing that her kitten was so much braver. "The world, in her mind, revolves around her and... it is a friendly world."

She wished she could visit it.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Too cute to kick and anyone who dared to try would be facing a very, very angry Hinata. Who was mild until severely provoked and then reacted much like an avalanche.

"If I have a say," she said, smiling because she did, in this. "Then her world will stay as it is. She is certainly in no hurry to grow up."

Two years a kitten. Hinata didn't need to know animals well to be aware that that was unusual.

Yei? Puuuurring. Life was fabulous.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Two years and counting," she said, taking a seat on the roof edge and keeping an eye on the two of them. "Wh-Which I understand is quite unusual."

He could absolutely kitten-sit! Or playdates! Though Hinata might pause for a bit before asking if he had an animal as well...

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Not really," she said, trying to decide how much of that was simply having the practice and how much of that was truth. "I don't think, so... their litter needs to be changed frequently, they need to be fed and their water changed. A vet, to make certain they're healthy..."

She shrugged a small bit.

"Mostly affection and care. They will let you know, in their own way, what is needed."

Like Yei. Who was going to mew at him. Surely he could pick her up?

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes," she said, smiling as Yei purred like only a kitten could purr and went into puddle-of-kitten mode where bones seemed to be optional.

Hinata hesitated. "Are you... thinking of one?"

Perhaps? Maybe?

Yei was just going to purr.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
She nodded thoughtfully. It was... pretty obvious what he was referring to, in some ways.

"I don't suppose," she said carefully, "that simply taking your cat to a vet here would be feasible after graduation? Most alumni visit..."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"If they're healthy," she continued, smiling slightly. "They need only a check up every now and then. It is not much of a hassle."

Not for someone that loved and purred and snuggled with you.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Nothing lasts forever," she said, quietly. "But the price they ask is a small one for what they give us."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Her eyes gentled.

"I am sure, for that, that no one would begrudge you extra time on the island."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Hinata cast her smile up towards the sky as Yei yawned happily.

"Then... why not?"

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yei was happy and warm and in true kitten fashion was all tuckered out from her grand adventure! Yawning was normal!

So was the fact that Jono was going to have a kitten sleeping on him in another minute or so. Sleeeeeeepy. Little sleepy purrs, even.

"I think," she said, not sure if it was her place to say anything. "Th-The fact that you think you would m-means that you care enough to work towards not doing so."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
"They do not expect you to be perfect," she said, glancing at him. "Trying, and listening to them: that is what they want."

Perfection, after all, was impossible to obtain.

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"You do," she said, smiling slightly. "Though toys are advisable as well. Bells and catnip mice and a scratching post..."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-10-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Don't laugh at him Hinata. Don't laugh.

"Of course," she said, keeping a straight face. "Not having a cat would make such consideration moot."
