In Front of the Dorms, Friday Morning

Christmas was always a very ambivalent time for Calvin, attempts at good behaviour spawned from the desire for presents competing with, well, his Calvinness. This year hadn't been as much of a struggle...at least until the snow had started falling.

That had tipped the balance well and truly in the favour of Calvin giving up completely on getting anything but coal (and the odd can of tuna courtesy of Hobbes) in his stocking.

He had been up since the very wee hours, building what he was quite certain was the most awesome snowfort in the history of ever, then stockpiling ammo. As Hobbes kept watch, he carefully patted yet another slushball into shape, waiting for his first unsuspecting victim to make their appearance.

A "Victim" Approaches

[personal profile] wrongkindofsith 2010-12-24 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
After the weirdness of the past few days, Cara was relieved to find the only thing out of the usual this morning was the thick blanket of snow covering the ground and still falling from the sky.

Okay, maybe relieved wasn't quite the right word, but this early in the day it was unlikely anyone was around to see her grin.

Cara had spent most of the past few weeks even more on-edge for potential attacks than usual, but snowballs were a silent killer, and she reacted just a touch too slow to avoid half-frozen slush dripping down the back of her neck.

She spun on her heel, trying to determine where exactly the missile had come from.

It wasn't exactly hard for Cara to spot the toy, even if it hadn't been perched on top of a snowdrift that didn't exactly look natural, its black and orange fur stood out against all the white.

She ducked down and started scooping up snow into a ball, before creeping towards the fort.

Considering that Cara was leaning over the edge of the wall about to drop a sizeable snowball on his head? Not really, no.

Maybe not escape, but Cara did back away from the wall to clear the snow from her eyes.

And to collect more ammunition.

Bruce was coming back to the dorms after getting back into town early this morning. He'd been on a plane all night, he was tired, he had spent a week getting punched in the face by a championship boxer as a means of training, and it was Christmas.

If anyone were to tell him 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Holidays' this morning before he got some rest, he might actually break out a 'Humbug.'

Honestly, he probably needed a snowball upside the head.

When Cara caught sight of Bruce, she was momentarily torn between warning him about the fight in progress, or aiming at him herself snowball and blaming Tiger Boy.

The latter won out.

Besides, coming from Cara a snowball to the head was practically an affectionate greeting.

After taking a moment to consider what just happened, Bruce wiped the snowball from his face and turned toward the thrower. ...He hadn't expected to see Cara there. "Really?" he asked. "You're actually getting into a snowball fight?"

He put his bags on the ground, just in case this was going to have to retaliate.

"It's not a fight, it's a battle." That would be a 'yes', then. She pointed towards the spiky hair barely visible over the edge of the fort. "He threw it at you."

A muffled "Liar!" came from the direction of the fort as the hair ducked back out of view.

Bruce bent down, scooped up a large amount of snow into a ball... then pulled it in two, throwing one half at Cara, and launching the other in a trajectory that he thought should clear the wall of the fort. He had taken his best guess at Calvin's position based on the quick flash of hair. If nothing else, it would serve as a warning shot.

Carefully wiping snow off her face, Cara supposed she deserved that. She should have ducked faster.

But it wasn't like she hadn't fought multiple enemies at once before, she could handle this, especially since it looked like Calvin wasn't leaving his fort any time soon.

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-12-24 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have a feeling you picked the fight in the first place, so it's still your own fault," Bruce called back to Calvin. The person hiding in the snow fort was usually the one who threw the first snowball.

Bruce was leaning slightly to his right just in case he needed to dive and scoop up some more snow. But he figured he'd give diplomacy a shot for the moment. "We're even right now, Cara. Do you really want to take this further?"

Cara considered her options, she was quite certain she could take Bruce if she needed to, but she had only been acting on impulse when she'd lobbed that snowball at him. "Depends, are you going to help me with him?"

She didn't really feel the need to clarify which him she was talking about.

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-12-24 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"No," Bruce said. "I don't have any issues with him. So, what do you choose?"

A tumbleweed would have been thematically appropriate at that moment, but it wouldn't have fit in with the season. Too bad.

[personal profile] wrongkindofsith 2010-12-24 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
A smirk and another snowball aimed directly for Bruce was a very eloquent answer, Cara felt.

Look, she'd had a very stressful month, and found violence extremely cathartic. Even the mock, snowy kind.

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-12-24 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce dove to his right, taking the snowball in the side. He rolled as he hit the ground, scooping up another snowball as he went. By the time he got up to his knees, he was already throwing a retaliatory ball.

Re: Of Course You Realise This Means War...

[personal profile] wrongkindofsith 2010-12-24 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Since she hadn't been planning on blaming Calvin for that one, Cara had already been ducking for the cover of a nearby snowdrift. Sure she still got damp and cold when she hit the ground, but the important thing was getting out of the line of fire.

Not that it'd be hard for Bruce to figure out which snowdrift she was using for cover, given that red on white was never going to win awards for seamless blending in.

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-12-24 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like Bruce had it better with his black overcoat, but he had an advantage. He picked up his bag to use as a shield after forming another snowball. He started to make his way over to the girl who was blending in very poorly with his defense up.

Re: Of Course You Realise This Means War...

Advantage or no, Cara tended not to use defensive tactics beyond what she considered strictly necessary.

That didn't stop her frowning when she caught sight of Bruce's makeshift shield. While she tried to figure out the most effective way of dealing with that, she started semi-randomly tossing snowballs at him, hoping either some would sneak through or he'd tire himself out deflecting them all.

Re: Of Course You Realise This Means War...

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-12-24 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce only deflected what he needed to in order to get him close enough to throw the snowball in his hand with confidence that it would hit. Then he dropped the bag, dove to his left, and scooped up a couple handfuls of snow. Obviously he couldn't do that while holding any kind of shield.

The major disadvantage of very rarely getting a chance to spend time in the snow was that you forgot just how incredibly cold it was when it got under your leathers.

But Cara was Mord'Sith, cold meant nothing to her. Not when Bruce was close enough that she could go from throwing snowballs at him to simply attempting to shove a double-handful of snow down his shirt.

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2010-12-24 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh come on!" Bruce yelled when he felt the cold hit his skin. Fortunately, he did have two handfuls of snow himself that he tried to smush into the back of her neck in an attempt to get some of it down her back.

He would have just tried to shove it down the front of her leathers, but he was a gentleman.

Bruce may have been a gentleman, but Cara was most definitely not a lady. Even if some sense of basic decency was keeping her from trying to shove yet another handful of snow down his trousers. So far.

It was debatable which of them would be more surprised by the fact her reaction to having clumps of wet, clammy snow dripping down her back was to start giggling.

Well, drawing attention to the fact she was acting like anything other than the most Mord'Sithliest Mord'Sith ever was actually a pretty good way to stop Cara doing something. "It's only snow."

Bruce got up and brushed himself off "Well, since you're beig kind, I should probably take the moment to head back inside."

So of course he bent down, grabbed a handful of snow, and flung it wildly at her before dashing toward his discarded bag.

Why what's this? A call to arms for the blood of any warrior! Or even just a bored Elf Queen, angry at herself for missing the kissing contest.

She made two snow balls, one for each hand and charged foward. "Banzai!"

Leda dodged the first barrage, but since she did it by ducking and rolling, she lost one of her snowballs. Undaunted, she threw it at Calvin.
