By now, Alex had gotten used to there being pretty much no one in the damn dorms. It was quiet which meant he wasn't getting any surprising headaches. Instead, he was just alone with his own thoughts. To some, that may have been worse but Alex just didn't care right now. He hadn't heard from Aaron or Amber on Christmas and his phone call to his mother had been met with confusion and crying.

So, that was a nice damper on his mood. After that, the quiet was actually nice. He didn't have to worry about any gnome roommates or anything like that bitching at him. He could just turn on the television, find something mindless and eat the Chinese he'd ordered earlier.

It'd been pizza yesterday and Chinese today. Alex didn't really do typical holiday fare.

After a day and then some spent alone in his room, Bruce figured he probably needed some kind of human contact. The holiday was over and he didn't mind the next one, so it was probably safe for other people to be around him.

He had hoped that the first human contact he found around the dorms would be someone other than Karev, of course, but he'd make due. "Alex. What are you watching?"

"Something stupid," he said without looking up, "but it's not a Christmas movie so it wins points for that."

"With your cheery personality, I'd assumed you would turn off anything that wasn't Claymation," Bruce joked. "Actually, I'm right there with you."

"And here I would have pegged you for a sappy holiday movie guy," he said sarcastically. "Get your fill of the romantic obnoxiousness?"

"I was already sick of Christmas back in October," Bruce said. "I can't wait to get to New Year's and declare the rest of the season over."

"Well, we can agree on that," he said and smirked. "You didn't go home? No spoiling for Bruce?"

"Unfortunately my parents haven't figured out how to spoil me from beyond the grave," Bruce said, cutting to the chase. "How about you? What are you still doing here?"

Oh, if Bruce wanted to play that way, Alex thought he could measure up.

"My dad's probably got a needle stuck in his arm and a hooker in his room and my mom's insane," he said, shrugging. "Not the setup for a good Christmas."

"Institutionalized, or just generally insane?" Bruce asked.

"We don't have enough money to institutionalize a fucking pine cone," he said. "No, she's just crazy and on as many meds as I can afford."

"Well, at least we know why neither of us care for Christmas," Bruce mused.

"I'm not really all that upset to miss out on garish Christmas sweaters or fruitcake," he replied, making a face. "New Year's is really more my holiday but that's because it's a day for drinking."

"And a day for turning the page, getting on with something else," Bruce said. He apparently had a slightly more poetic heart than Alex did.

"How philosophical of you," Alex said, just barely resisting an eyeroll. "How is a poet like you not snatched up yet?"

"Mostly because I'm not much for settling down," Bruce said.

"You wouldn't even settle for the kinky ones?" he asked, smirking. "I would."

"Thanks for sharing," Bruce said. "... But no, not long-term. I don't have time to sort out whatever kind of psychological torture that would end up being for both of us."

"Psychological torture?" Alex repeated, glancing over at Bruce. "What the hell do you do to girls?"

"Disappoint them, mostly," Bruce said. "And no, not in the way you're probably going to joke about."

Alex would have made the joke anyway but decided just to laugh instead. "So what, you stick to hookers and one night stands?"

"Please, I don't need hookers," Bruce said. "If you're really that curious, yes, I've had a few one night stands and a few short relationships."

"So've I," Alex said and shrugged. "It's just easier, I think. No strings, no attachment, no crying."

"And it leaves more time to do other things," Bruce said. "I'm here to learn as much as I can, not get tangled up in drama."

"Nerd," Alex said and smirked. "You really looking for knowledge about how to shop or whatever weird ass class this place might come up with?"

"I'm a little more discriminating in my class selection than that," Bruce said.

"What, learning how to shop too beneath you?" Alex asked, shaking his head. "I think whoever teaches that class might take exception with that attitude."

"Probably not, but it's not going to hurt my grade if I'm not in it," Bruce said.

"You could need some shopping expertise," Alex pointed out, shrugging. "Maybe an invasion will happen and that's the way to defeat the megalomaniac that's in charge."

"If that happens, I'll finance a shopping spree for people who are better qualified to spend recklessly," Bruce said. Ariel would be his first stop for that one, yes.

"Oooh, rich boy," Alex said and waggled his eyebrows dutifully. "So, I should wish for something like that to happen so I can get me some money. I need a new pair of shoes."

"Sorry. I'd also be more discriminating with my shoppers," Bruce said.

"What, we're not friends?" Alex asked, frowning at him. "I thought we'd just bonded or something."

"Not enough for me to hand you my credit card," Bruce said.

"How sad," Alex said even if he didn't sound that sad. "You don't get any of my Chinese food for that."

"I'll find some way to live with the disappointment," Bruce deadpanned.
