Magic + Support Reserves, Outside the Dorms, Wednesday After Classes

"Hey, welcome back," Tara said, her hands were in the pockets of her jeans, and she looked fairly comfortable as she started talking. "So, uh, we figured this week we'd do something sort of goofy and fun and summer camp-y to take our minds off how cold it is and the snow and everything. We're having a scavenger hunt."

She paused for a moment to pass out sheets of paper with the list of things to look for on them. "So what you do," she explained, "Is, you have an hour to go around the island, either alone or in pairs. You can use whatever powers you may have, if that makes it easier. Mostly, though, this is about being innovative and really seeing what's around you. At the end of the hour, whoever comes back with the most things from the list wins."

Raven had her cloak wrapped around her, as usual, with the hood up, shadowing her face. "You are, of course, allowed to make creative interpretations of what each item is," she said. "You are not bound to literal interpretations of the list."

"Just be careful, okay?" Karla added. "There's ice and snow everywhere. Also? If someone gets gremlin bit, we can't guarantee we won't take pictures."

"There's not that much snow and ice, though," Dolf interjected, who had seen it a lot worse in his time. "So that is no excuse if you miss all of them. And look around really well! All the things you see today might save your life or someone else's tomorrow!"

Because it wouldn't be him if he didn't throw in a fretty warning. He coughed, cleared his throat, and added, "And good luck, everyone. We'll be waiting."

Elphaba quite didn't mind the activity, actually. It'd give her something to do.

Though she had to wonder why being gremlin bit was suddenly such a high possibility. It hardly seemed fair, if the leaders were goading people into being bit for their own amusement. She didn't think Raven and Karla were so cruel, though. She didn't really know Dolf or Tara, but hardly thought so awful of them, either.

She'd have to think on that.

It should be stated for the record that Alexander was particularly pleased at the prospect of a scavenger hunt for funsies.

It was much more fun than the kinds of scavenger hunts he was used to, which tended to involve, you know, not being killed by evil magicians before your next birthday.

It pretty much went without saying at this point that Kennedy was going to show up, right? These days, she had somewhat more of a motivation in keeping an eye on Raven and Maladicta to make sure nothing went badly there, but then again... maybe she should just be concerned with Raven right now.

Thus the focus of her slightly frowny, worried look over her coffee today; any competitive allure to a scavenger hunt had to take a backseat to that.

Stephanie wasn't going to turn down a scavenger hunt! She could totally try and be sneaky through the whole thing, use it as practice, and chalk it up as a perfectly normal extracurricular activity. Score!

. . . she wasn't turning down the snacks, either.

Cally took one look around at the weather, despite Dolf's protestations, and disappeared back into the dorm, returning in a few minutes with an insulated canteen. (Otherwise known as a thermos, but Cally wasn't much for brand-name recognition of a brand she'd never heard of before coming here.)

That hot chocolate was coming along on any snowy scavenging trip she might make, thank you.

• A pillow from someone other than you or your roommate
  
• A Perk receipt
  
• Something from a faculty member's office
  
• A gremlin (stuffed, photographed, or drawn is fine)
  
• A picture of the stone angels
  
• Something from the beach
  
• Something blue

Read it over, pair up (or not) and off you go!

As Alexander reviewed the list, he considered how it was possible to find most of these things back at the store, but, then again, that did seem to take quite a bit of the fun out of it.

Doing it by himself also took out some fun, so he lifted his eyes and glanced around for someone who might be interested in partnering up.

Raven kept her hood up, using the chill outside as an excuse, but it was really to hide the fact that she looked like hell, and even makeup wasn't going to completely conceal that.

She had a feeling this was going to be her last meeting.

Dolf was there, and at roughly normal, resting levels of fret. Which was probably a good thing, because otherwise the odd glance he was shooting at Raven might have really worried him.

Tara figured playing would be a cheat, but it didn't keep her from wistfully considering how she would find some of the things on the list.

She was fretting a bit over Raven, but the girl kind of had her on perma-fret.

After people had mostly dispersed, Karla headed over to Tara for a chat. "You look a little twitchy," she said quietly. "Worried about Raven, too?"

"She says it's just stress," Tara said, as if that was what she wanted to believe more than what she actually did. "Th-that she's having a hard time with some classes. I guess I ... h-have to believe her."

"I don't and you don't either," Karla said. "Stress from classes wouldn't cause this. And it wouldn't explain what happened to the web I spun on Monday." She explained the fragments of images she'd seen right before the web had caught fire. "That's never happened before," she said, voice grave. "I think Someone realized I was looking where I shouldn't and stopped me before I saw something important. And I think it's Someone we've tangled with before."

Tara bit her lip. "You think her father is back."

It wasn't a question. "I ... when I was playing around with telepathy before? there's something in her head. I thought it was a demon thing, but maybe..."

She couldn't finish the thought.

"Jono said..." Karla swallowed and tried again. "Jono said, back in Agio, after Jaenelle..." Words were difficult, weren't they? "After everything happened, Raven got into some kind of struggle. He says she was crying that she wouldn't give in and that her Soul-Self was flickering. I think...I think Raven witnessing all that death and destruction gave Trigon a foothold. And he used to his advantage."

Tara froze, feeling tears spring to her eyes. She blinked them back. "How long would we have, if we're right?" she asked. "W-we can't confront her, not without a plan."

"I tried to press her a little bit about what was wrong yesterday and I worried that she was just going to up and vanish on me," Karla agreed, sounding frustrated. "But what can we do? Just wait for all Hell to break loose?"

Tara shrugged helplessly. "What else could we do? Maybe -- does Jono know anything?"

"Nothing more than we do," Karla said, tucking a lock of hair away. "Unless he's found out more in the past few days. Just that Trigon's there and things are getting more dangerous for Raven."

"I'll do some reading at the shop tomorrow," Tara promised. "But -- I'm not sure I'll find anything. H-he's bigger than the demons in my world, most of them."

"We didn't find anything in the library, either," Karla admitted. "Maybe a trip into Special Collections sometime this weekend? There may be something more in there. Or we can try to talk to the jerks from the JLA. They might know something."

"Are we sure they won't swoop in and try to kidnap Raven if we tell them she's acting funny?" Tara asked ruefully.

"Ugh." Karla really, really wasn't a fan. "Maybe we can tell them we're doing a book report on the JLA's stupidest moments and information about Trigon is necessary."

That broke the tension enough that Tara laughed. "Wow, evil. And yet they might be dumb enough to buy it."

Karla was there and tightly bundled up as well. Personally, she was inclined to agree with Dolf about it not being that much snow--they'd gotten outside, hadn't they?--but she had plenty of Healing supplies for injury and frostbite on hand anyway.

La, hope this will be fun! Usual rules about not modding anything you can't always mod apply (e.g., I couldn't say Tara took Ghanima's chair out of her office without asking Ahddie). You can handwave as much or as little of the hunt as you want.

Henry DeTamble's boring, normal office stuff is up for grabs, for what it's worth.
