Magic and Support Reserves Meeting, Dorm Lobby, Wednesday Afternoon

The blizzard may have stopped, but there was still a lot of snow on the ground and considering today's activity, Magic Reserves was being held inside today. The usual tables were set up however, and they positively groaned under the weight of all the handwavey food. More than just snacks and drinks, there appeared to be several whole meals there, including a few all-vegetarian options.

"Hey everyone," Karla said, looking more subdued than usual. "Thanks so much for coming today. We have kind of an unusual activity planned today, but it involved eating and talking, so hopefully no one will mind much. In any situation, whether it's invading creatures or something terrible happening to the island, one of your most valuable resources for getting through it whole is your allies--your friends. Knowing who has your back and who you can trust frees you up to focus on other things--potentially life-saving things. So today, we're going to share food and talk to and about one another. Get to know folks we might not already, and reaffirm the bonds we share with others. Because this way, when we're facing trouble, we can remember that we don't do so alone."

Dolf, hands in his pockets, nodded. "There is not really much else to say," he said. "Sometimes we just need to know people will pick us up if things are bad, and that there will be food and drink when we need it, too. That we're warm and with each other, we can be safe." His words weren't as smooth as Karla's, obviously, but at least the lad continued to be earnest. Boy scout.

Tara appreciated the Boy Scout thing, today more than ever. "We're safe here," she echoed softly, sounding sad but composed. "Today is for enjoying that, and enjoying being family for each other. Even if the families we came from weren't up to the job. And if anyone wants to talk to any of us, we're here."

Elphaba looked over at Tara as she sat and realized she really didn't know much about the girl.

"Hello," she said, putting on her friendliest smile. "I... I would like to compliment you, but I don't think i really know much about you. We haven't really talked much since our first meeting. Which is silly, because Karla has told me to do so, actually."

"Karla likes setting her friends up," Tara said. "I'm supposed to talk to Ender and I, uh, haven't." She sounded a bit embarrassed by this. "How are you settling in? I mean, I know you've been here a long time I just ... haven't gotten much time with you."

"I've not had the easiest of times, but I think I'll be the first to admit that I've probably been making it more difficult than necessary," Elphaba said, with a half smile, half embarrassed wince on her face.

"I'm hoping to make a better start of that. I... conflicted with those who were just trying to be friendly."

"What happened?" Tara asked. "I had a hard time making friends at first, but that was mostly being shy, and not r-really being much good at talking to new people."

"It's not a matter of shyness," Elphaba said. "Merely that I... I am not quick to trust, and sadly quicker to think the worst of a person's curiosity or motives. I've been told that I'm just as ugly on the inside as I am on the outside, which is something I'm trying to fix."

"Whoever said that to you wasn't very nice," Tara winced. "I, uh, my dad? Said. Some -- pretty bad stuff to me, growing up. It stays with you. N-not that that's the same."

"I know that experience as well," Elphaba said, giving Tara a sympathetic smile. "Though many times he didn't need to actually say anything. How he acted spoke more than words. For instance, he didn't want me to realize the potential of... whatever this power is, inside of me."

"Do you actually do magic?" Tara asked, trying to remember what she had heard. "I think all I know is that sometimes you make things happen."

"I'm not sure, yet," Elphaba said. "I haven't tested it. It's a part of me that I've been reluctant to share or explore. But now it seems... foolish to try and deny a part of me, just because my father says I should."

"If you need help, it's why we're here," Tara offered. She could use a project, anyhow, and she suspected Karla would say the same.

"Thank you," Elphaba said, earnestly. "I probably'd be useless trying to figure it out myself. I've not any experience in magic, after all."

"Come by the Magic Box some Thursday and we can at least get started?" Tara suggested. "Or ... here, but there are so many people and it might make it hard to focus."

"I'll take you up on that," Elphaba said. "And you're right, it'd be better to do it in a more secluded location. If for no other reason that to lessen those who might be accidentally affected."
