With his one class over and done, Nathan found himself almost energetic. He didn't want to go laze around his room like he usually did and he didn't want to smoke near his window in his most sincere imitation of a hipster emo poet douchebag. He didn't (and wouldn't ever) have the beard or scarf for that.

He ended up in the common room because that was the next best thing to going into town. This little dinky island had absolutely no nightlife to speak of which was unbearably sad and needed to be changed. Of course, Nathan had no money and no drive to really change that but he'd perfectly happy to encourage someone with a round of applause should they take the initiative.

Nathan clicked on the television and then actually practiced jumping onto the couch. He wanted to see what positions he could contort his body into before landing. There was the flat on your back, flat on your stomach, stretched on your side, tuck 'n roll, ass down, and swan dive. Eventually, he stayed on his stomach, head pillowed on his arms while he watched whatever the fuck was on the television.

So much for his energy. He was fickle like that.

Swiftly and neatly sucking her finger clean was the perfect excuse for a pause, not that she really needed it to come up with something.

"Sometimes when you smile."

"And yet, sometimes not?" Nathan asked, making her face at the near sex she was having with the remains of her pudding.

Kate glanced over at him, the corners of her mouth quirking upwards just a bit. "Well, you tend to shatter the illusion by talking."

"I think you're just jealous," Nathan remarked, shrugging a shoulder. "You want to be as adorable as me and as witty as me and since you can't, you're forced into slighting me to make yourself look better. How sad, Kate."

"Hey, if i'd wanted to slight you I would've said you're never adorable," Kate shrugged, moving onto her other pudding cup. "I just find it hard to find you adorable when you're talking about random girls wanting guys to come on them."

"It takes a special breed of girl to find me adorable and I guess you just don't have the talent," he said, smug. "I'm sure you're too busy finding blokes who wear loafers and cardigans all kinds of adorable. So adorable you can't even keep your hands off them and you must ravish them at once, cardigan and all!"

"What makes you think adorable is even a quality I'm attracted to?" Kate wondered, like it wasn't. "Could totally be a quality I'm definitely not looking for in a partner."

"Are you saying it's not a quality you're attracted to?" Nathan asked, just asking point blank because he wasn't about get himself run in circles because she wanted to be confusing.

Oh like that waould stop her from being difficult.

"Why should I tell you?" Kate asked, but then added, because this was supposed to be a somewhat easy day, "I'm attracted to a lot of different things. That's one, in some people. Sometimes."

"Some people? Who, besides me, is hitting your adorable meter recently?" Nathan asked curiously. "Who is wearing cardigans that just make your loins heat up because you just must have that checkered pattern of softness against your skin."

Kate rolled her eyes. "I don't have a cardigan fetish, but I'm starting to think you might. And I didn't say it was a quality that's been getting a lot of my attention lately."

"So, this rich douche Zach isn't adorable?" Nathan inferred from that statement. "What is he, then? A good lay? Don't make me start singing that fucking awful golddigger song, Kate. Cuz, I will."

"Oh shut up," she replied, rolling her eyes again. "He's... handsome. And nice. And, I suppose, occasionally adorable, but that's not the main thing there."

"And what is the main thing there?" Nathan asked, sounding interested now. "Does he buy beer for you since you're still criminally underage? How...patriarchal of him."

Kate shook her head. "I just like him, and he likes me. Is that really so hard to understand?"

"Have I given any indication that I'm having a hard time comprehending?" Nathan wondered, raising an eyebrow. "I merely wondered why. Most people do find traits they like in another person which, in turn, leads to a like of the person. How am I the one explaining relationships to you?"

"I'm wondering the same thing," Kate replied, raising an eyebrow back at him. "It's not always that clear, I mean, you can't always pinpoint the exact things."

"Or you don't know," Nathan decided, snickering. "You have absolutely no idea why you like him. Compare him to the ex that Caroline fucked -- "

Sorry Kate, he didn't care about your feelings at the moment.

" -- and tell me if there was a difference between them. Could you pinpoint it there?"

Kate sighed and tried to get her frustration out that way. All she could really hope for was that if he kept referring to it like that, she'd eventually get desensitized to it.

She wasn't quite there yet. "Could you maybe occasionally stop being an asshole for longer than mere five seconds at a time?"

"What? It's an honest question," Nathan said, seeing no issue with what he'd asked. "And while avoiding answering the question might work, you're still going to be thinking about it and asshole or not, you're going to realize I made a good point."

"No you didn't," she said, face something of a mask of being unimpressed. "I can like a guy without knowing specifically why. I can like the combination of qualities."

She could like that he liked her.

"Why do you care, anyway? I'm just gonna start seriously thinking you're jealous."

"Nope, I don't do jealous," he said lazily, turning his attention back towards the television. "You apparently do and I find it just hilarious. Without all these grudges, I think you and my roommate could be the best of friends, you know. She's really not that bad."

"And I really do not care," Kate drawled, scooping up a spoonful of pudding only to let it slowly slide back into the cup again. "She can be Mother Theresa for all I care, doesn't mean I have to like her."

Nathan rolled over onto his back, already laughing at how much she hated poor Caroline just for her one night stand. Girls were so pretty sometimes.

"And yet, you like me. And she likes me," Nathan remarked, tapping his chin. "Does that mean I bring you two together?"

Kate shoved the pudding cup on a nearby table. Didn't feel like eating any more of it. "No, that just means you know two people. Congratulations."
