It was Alex's turn to sell tickets fort he upcoming Valentine's Day dance and flowers for the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday. He was just glad he didn't have to be completely surrounded by pink and red. He might have retched up his breakfast if that had happened.

Taking up a seat behind the table in the lobby, he started slowly sipping the coffee that was needed to wake him up while he contemplated sending flowers to anyone. He wasn't really a flower type of guy but he knew girls got a kick out of them and he wanted girls to get a kick of him too so maybe he'd have to make a sacrifice.

For now, he was just sitting there, looking lazy.

Sov had noted that there were tickets and flowers being sold in the lobby, but they had no idea why. Eventually they had decided that asking might be a good idea, in case they missed something important.

A little shyly, they approached. "Excuse me. Can you tell me what this is about?"

"Sure, yeah," Alex said, sitting up in his seat a little. "Which part? The dance? Flowers? Or both?"

He'd gotten used to people coming from different worlds without the knowledge of holidays finally.

The helpful response made this easier. "Both," Sov replied, nodding.

"Okay." Alex paused for a second, trying to figure out how best to explain this all without sounding too confusing. He had to at least act presidential right now.

"Well, they're both revolving a holiday called Valentine's Day," he started, looking up at Sov. "And to be really basic, it's a holiday about love. For people that are in love and stuff. There's gifts, which is where the flowers come in, and celebrations, which is where the dance comes in."

"A holiday about love?" Sov repeated. "People who are in love?"

Romantic love had never been a big thing in the Thade family, so forgive Sov for looking a little confused and surprised.

"It can go either way there," Alex said, shrugging. "People who aren't in love celebrate it sometimes but it's mostly for people who are in love, yeah. It's kind of a day around celebrating that love and spoiling each other with presents and nights out and intimacy."

"So it's not really a dance for everyone?" Not that they had to go, but it seemed a little excluding. On the other hand there would probably be other celebrations, wouldn't there?

"Nah man, it's totally for everyone," Alex said, shaking his head. "It's really an excuse for us to hold a dance. We need occasions for our dances and this holiday just gives us one. It's like a big party. Lots of people go who aren't in love and just have a good time. It's fun, actually. There's lots of free food and drinks and dancing for people that like that kind of thing."

That sounded a lot more like a proper celebration, and Sov brightened immediately. "I think I'd like to go, then."

"Sounds like a plan to me," Alex said, reaching for his roll of tickets to tear one off. "And it's sort of a formal thing too. Basically, it means we all get a little dressier than usual. Whatever kind of thing that is for you, that's what I'd go with."

He passed the ticket over with a half smile.

Sov looked at the ticket and smiled. "I think I brought a few things." Like that bright red shirt. It really suited them, or so everyone said.

"Then, you're set," Alex said, nodding. "Plan on making a night of it. These things go on pretty long because the school goes all out for these things. What kind of party would it be if it was cheap and lame?"

Not familiar with the word 'lame' in that context, Sov still thought they understood the meaning. "A bad party?"

"Yeah, pretty much," he said, chuckling a little. "And who wants to go to a bad party? I'd rather sit in my room and trim my toenails honestly but I'm sure there are some people out there who like bad parties."

"I don't," Sov assured him, then added: "You mean the ones where no one dances because the musician got drunk on the beer before the whole thing started and accidentally poured out the rest of the barrel?" That hadn't been fun.

Alex raised an eyebrow and couldn't stop a laugh from slipping out at that depiction of a bad party. "Yeah, that sounds pretty bad. I've been to parties where the food's bad, everyone gets sick, and retches on your feet. Not one I wanna repeat. Ever."

Sov made a face. "So, let's hope for better luck with this one. I'm Sov, by the way. I'm new here."

"Alex," he said, extending a hand across the table. "Not new at all. And I've been to a few of these dances and never gotten sick so I think we're good on food. Hopefully I didn't just jinx us."

Shaking Alex's hand, Sov said: "Hopefully not. But I promise I won't hold you responsible if it does."

"Thanks," Alex snickered, shaking his head. "Wouldn't wanna get an even worse reputation around here than I already have. People would be out for blood if they thought I ruined their dance."

"And how did you get a reputation like that?" Sov asked, amused.

"Perseverance and hard work," he said, smirking mightily. "I don't censor myself or really care what I say and sometimes that means offensive things come out and not everyone likes that."

Clearly Alex enjoyed that reputation. "That's true in many places," Sov noted. "I try not to offend people, but this place is really different from home."

"You're not alone there, at least," Alex said, nodding. "I mean, for me, it's nothing that new besides all the weird crap but a lot of people here are from radically different places so it's understandable to feel like that."

"The weird crap?" Yes, Sov still didn't know. "And you're from... Earth?" It was still strange to say that. Sov grinned.

"Yeah, you know, like the rose petals?" Alex asked because maybe Sov had missed that. "That were everywhere yesterday? That kind of stuff doesn't happen outside this island. And yep, Earth. Born and raised west of here."

"Oh, those! It was a lot to clean up." Of course, Sov had just thought that it was a natural occurrence on a planet with so much plant life.

They nodded. "I'm from a planet called Gethen, which you've probably never heard of." No one else had.

"Nope." Alex confirmed with a shake of his head. "Totally different from this place, then?"

"Totally," Sov confirmed.

"Yeah, that's what most people say," he replied with a nod. "Takes awhile to adjust even for us that came from places on Earth."

[Night!]

Mmm, Valentine's Day candy.
