Roof; Wednesday Evening

It was by no means warm outside, but it was still nice enough for Luke to be out on the roof with a coat on and not be completely uncomfortable. He was sitting out on the ledge of the roof with his legs stretched out in front of him, just looking out onto the island and getting lost in his own thoughts. He might go out and fly in a bit, but right now he seemed content with what he was doing, even if his thoughts weren't so pleasant. Maybe if he got all of his thinking out of the way now it wouldn't bother him later when he went to sleep.

Maladicta felt like a bit of fresh air and some night sky. This didn't mean opening a window because clearly that would be too easy.

So, the ever popular for socialization roof it was. Which would be why seeing someone there wasn't all that shocking. "Is that the brooding only section?"

Luke pretended to think about that for a moment. "I wouldn't say it's brooding only, but I'm gonna have to ban anything resembling chipper. It's just not a favorite emotion of mine."

"As long as it's not required to sit there," Maladicta replied. "I'd rather not give into the cliche any more than necessary.

"Oh man, am I feeding a cliche and not knowing it?" Luke asked. "I don't spend a lot of time up here so I don't know all the rules."

"As long as there are no longing looks at the moon, I suppose you're safe."

"I think I can hold off on that," Luke assured her. "I'm more of the indoor, lay in bed, glaring up at the ceiling kind of brooder anyway. This out here was just me being contemplative. Totally different thing."

Maladicta nodded sagely, completely seeing his point as she hopped up onto the ledge before taking a seat. Vampire.

"Do you curse anyone's name while you do so?"

"Sometimes. When I've really been at the whole contemplating thing for a while," he said. "But I do not shake my fist in the air when I do it. That's just embarrassing."

"I've heard that the occasional monologue does wonders for your health," Maladicta replied. "How else would evil scientists live so long?"

"Well they are super smart evil scientists. You'd think they would have many ways to up their life expectancy," he pointed out. "Oh, right, I'm Luke by the way."

He sometimes forgot the name part.

"Maladicta," she replied, offering a hand. "Their only weakness, I gather, is hubris and a well placed angry mob."

"I think they can also suffer if they have a poor test subject out for revenge," Luke said, shaking the offered hand. "I remember your name from radio. Gave me some trouble for a while there."

Too many a's for him to get in the right order.

"It's a family name." One of so, so many. "It could have been worse. I could have been named Payn. That's with a y, mind."

Yes, shudder with her.

"Oh man that's unfortunate," Luke said, shaking his head. "At least Maladicta sounds nice to hear."

"Or like I'm plotting to steal puppies and turn their fur into a patchy little coat."

Luke laughed. "Has someone actually accused you of that or have you spent far too much time analyzing your name?"

"Well, the first time Alexander met me, he thought I was an evil witch."

Which was totally wrong. Witches were from Lancre.

"You're not, are you?" Hey, he wouldn't be surprised if she was. He had seen weirder things.

"Vampire." Natch.

"Oooh. That's a new one for me," Luke said, looking at Maladicta a bit closer just to see if he could notice anything vampire-y about her. "Please say I'm your first demigod."

"Well, there was one girl in my unit that channeled a duchess who was like a goddess," Maladicta replied slowly. "If that counts."

"That's not exactly the same, but pretty impressive nonetheless," Luke decided. "There's less channeling for me, but more divine DNA."

Maladicta give his arm a prod with her finger. "So gods everywhere get around then."

"Yep, just like in the myths." He was just glad that the gods seemed to stop the weird bestiality thing. "I have more siblings than I can count, and even more cousins than that. And yet Christmas is usually a bust. Seriously unfair."

Yeeeeah. They were freaks like that.

"They're less mythic and more obnoxious where I'm from," Maladicta replied. "Do you also have a turtle god?"

"Can't say I have one of those," he said. Luke kind of wished he had one now though. "Is the turtle god obnoxious?"

For some reason he just couldn't picture turtles being obnoxious.

"He does have a lot of priests that run about with explanatory pamphlets." Oh yeah. Discworld had Jehovah's witnesses.

"Well. I think that's a requirement for almost every god." What was a hero but a walking pamphlet for why a specific god was awesome? "I'm impressed that a turtle can run an operation like that though."

"Well, it's no crocodile god, but he seems to manage well enough," Maladicta replied. "What is yours then?"

"Greek gods," Luke answered. "They look human most of the time but, uh, back in the day my grandfather used to turn into animals to seduce women. Which is...gross."

So gross, Zeus. So gross.

"That sounds like Io. Is he also a fan of lightning and smiting the heretics in interesting ways?"

Because being impressive at killing humans was a surprisingly good way to gain followers.
