Magic Reserves, The Preserve, Wednesday Afternoon

About ten minutes after the usual start of the Reserves, Karla came dashing into the Preserves. "Hi...everyone," she said, panting. "Sorry...late...Portal..."

Was there a law that said that the Portals had to open up in the most inconvenient place possible? Was there?

"Gimme...sec?" She waved to Dolf to begin while she caught her breath. Or maybe pick up where he'd left off, she wasn't sure if he'd been waiting for her.

"...Hi," said Dolf, looking... surprised. Surprised was a good word. He'd put out a lot of stuff on the tables, stuff that wasn't just food, but also bandages and clothes. Though there were cookies. Many cookies. "Um, everyone, Karla is here, so we could have waited another... three minutes?"

Sigh. "Uh, we were talking about putting boxes of important things around the island in case we might need them...?"

Straightening now, Karla looked over at the tables and nodded. "Oooh, yeah, that makes sense. Little caches of items and gear to make safe drops at places. I like that. So, okay..." She was getting her breath back, at least. "So, we have a lot of ~~moddable~~ stuff here. Let's brainstorm what we'd want to find in little safety stashes around the island and start putting those boxes together. Let's see how comprehensive we can make them without ending up with something too big to be useful."

"Yes, that," Dolf said, helpfully. He was distracted from anything else he might have liked to say by the noise of a crying baby. "...She has been loud," he muttered, sprinting off to one of the tables and picking up little Lies. "And then when we are done talking, we should take some of them out and put them places."

Try not to eat ALL the cookies Dolf set out.

Well, no, Kennedy wasn't going to eat all the cookies, sheesh, even if it looked like it; she'd had plenty of leftover pizza for breakfast, and lunch, and probably enough for dinner tonight too, and it wasn't like she was going to hoard cookies or anything like that, geez.

She could totally express her appreciation of them by eating about a handful enthusiastically, though. Shut up.

Cally would be lucky to eat any of the cookies. Every time she reached for one, there would be the tuneless wail that Cally had identified as BOTTLE NOW.

Baby Joy was having a cranky day.

"Um, so sorry about the weekend," Dolf said, rubbing at the back of his head. Or trying to do so without jarring baby Lies, anyway.

To say that Cally was not quite with it today, especially in the middle of trying to bounce Joy out of a whining fit, would perhaps be understating the case. "What about the weekend?"

"Um, the yelling," Dolf said, shooting Joy a vaguely pained look. "And the throwing things-- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that, I swear."

He was babbling.

Give her a moment... before the explosive burst of laughter that even shocked the droidbaby into silence. "Are you sure? Peeling the potatoes that way can't have been good for your teeth, but the beard was rather attractive, in its own odd way."

No. No, it wasn't.

Dolf went really, terribly red, and nearly used baby Lies to hide his shame. "I don't know why I thought that was a good idea!" he ~~whined~~ said.

"Did you perhaps drink something you shouldn't have?" Cally guessed. Which around here could be... anything.

"Not that I know?" Dolf said. The Swede had eaten a lot of mayonnaise, but that had been after the fact. "I... think something bit me?"

The red was not fading any, no.

"Oh, a gremlin?" Cally had been lucky enough to evade that so far, but... "They threw things at my hair. Rude little monsters, aren't they?"

"They made me throw things at people!" Dolf pointed out. Loudly. And this time, he did duck behind the baby.

Cally was trying to be kind, truly, but it was difficult to do that and not giggle. "At least no one was seriously injured? I heard nothing about any potato or meat-related incidents on the radio."

"I think I didn't hurt anyone," Dolf offered, and ducked his head, "But I also think I scared Rilla." And that other girl, boy, he wasn't sure.

Cally winced slightly. "She is a little...easily startled, I suppose."

"And then she started yelling," Dolf added with a wince.

Ahem. Yes. "...who is the baby's dad?" he said, seguing with spectacular subtlety.

His subtlety was so subtle it was undetectable!

"She might have two mothers, you know." Not that she did, but hey.

And here half the reason why he'd changed the subject was because he wanted to stop blushing. "I didn't mean that she couldn't!" he protested vehemently. "Of course she can have two mothers!"

He was so easy to bait.

So easy Cally almost felt guilty, now. "She could, but she doesn't; her 'father' is Warren Worthington."

"Right!"

Oh, for the love of god. Dolf switched the baby to his other knee and tried not to jostle her too much. "Uh, I mean. Do you think he can take your baby...? Karla is taking mine today."

So they could bounce the babies over to the other couple. It almost felt like a weird surrogate thing going on.

MP Cally had only just now put that together. "Oh dear - they're dating each other, aren't they." She glanced down at the droid infants. "I hope the children like each other; it seems they're destined to spend a lot of time together. Warren said he would take Joy for the second half of the week, yes."

"Okay, good," Dolf said, before he lost his nerves, "Because it's been two days since we got them and I would like you to come over."

He was five seconds from tacking on to read books or to study, but thankfully for his cool he kept that in.

"For a play-date?" He really was too easy, sometimes; she needed to learn some restraint when it came to teasing him.

What should go into them? What can be left out? How big should they be?

Once the boxes are made, feel free to wander the island and drop them in places. Just make sure you note where they go, so a master list can be made.

There're only two today. After Karla shows up, anyway.

And at least one of them was sitting on one of the tables with a baby on his knee. Say hi to baby Lies and Dolf, everyone!

"Hey Tante!" Karla said, once she'd finally recovered. "Did you miss me?" Giving Dolf an unsure-but-game grin, she added, "Sorry, I had to go home yesterday and take care of a few things."

AND NOTHING BAD HAD HAPPENED. TAKE THAT, DOUBTERS.

"But I'm ready to take care of Lies whenever you'd like."

The robobaby attempted for 'true to life', and sort of gurgled in Karla's general direction.

"It's okay," Dolf said, quickly. "She makes a lot of noise, but it isn't so bad... if you pay attention."

No more making out with Cally in his room for him this week.

"Are you okay with keeping her then?" Karla asked, sounding almost confused by the idea. "I mean, I don't mind keeping an eye on her, but if you'd prefer to keep her, that's fine, too. I just don't want you to think that I'm just going to leave you stuck, or something."

"Um, I think it's okay?" Dolf said, after a long and polite pause in thinking that over. "But I'm not sure my girlfriend would really agree with me keeping it all the time."

"...Girlfriend?"

No, Karla, that had not been a subtle sign that Dolf wanted to gossip with you. Stop grinning at him like that.

"I'll be happy to take Lies with me after the meeting, if you want. Seriously, whenever you like."

Dolf made to look really hard like he wasn't planning to convince Cally to dump her own baby on someone and come to his room to, um, hang out.

He sort of succeeded, except for the part where he briefly glanced her way and probably gave the game away entirely. "Could you?" he asked, at last. "I can take her again after class tomorrow."

"Ooooh, of course," Karla said, and look at that. Her grin was much wider now, wasn't it? "I'd be happy to take her. Or both! I can baby-sit for Cally!"

Who was Cally's partner again...?

Karla was still trying to catch her breath. In her defense, however, she had just spent the last few days bleeding into random buckets.

...Look, it was a Kaeleeran thing, okay?
