Even if it was chillier than previous days, Nathan wasn't going to let that stop him from eating an ice cream cone he'd picked up in town. He'd only had a few bucks on him and ended up having to make the devastatingly difficult choice between ice cream and alcohol. In the end, he'd given his liver a break for the afternoon and gone with the ice cream.

Now, his long limbs were sprawled lazily in a chair, feet up and eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses. The clouds overhead would protect his fair skin from a burn even if he hadn't been wearing a soft hoodie and jeans. It was chilly but he was comfortable. He felt good.

Nathan would have liked to say he'd been busy thinking about important things but really, his mind was a complete blank save for the occasional explicit mental image that popped in there. Hey, he was a guy and that happened. He made no apologies for his dirty nature.

That got Kate's attention. She actually turned to face him, eyebrow raised. "So you're going? When?"

"Early May," he said, reaching into his pocket to try and pull his cigarettes out. "Figure why wait, right? I'll stick around to see if any hot co-eds show up and then I'm gone."

Kate... looked a bit disappointed, to be honest. Just for a moment, before she managed to school her expression into merely a slight twisting of her lips.

"Well," she said, slouching some more in her chair, "good luck with that, I guess."

"Yeah, thanks," he said humorlessly, shaking his head. "Don't miss me too much. I'd hate to know that I've left a veritable trail of broken hearts and sad ladyparts when I leave."

"Life goes on," Kate drawled, turning her head to look up at the sky. "I'm sure we'll all cope, somehow."

"What the fuck do you want me to do, Kate?" Nathan asked because he wasn't stupid enough to pick up on the shift in her emotions there. "Stay here?"

"I'm just disappointed it's so soon," she replied, a bit more quietly, albeit also a little flatly. "Sorry I'm being selfish, though it shouldn't be a fucking surprise that I am."

"Yeah well, shit came up and hit me in the fucking face and my mum happened to ask me at an opportune time. I took the out," Nathan said, fixing his eyes on the deck's floor.

"I know." Plenty of times had gone by that she would've gladly made the same decision if the opportunity had come at the right moment. She sighed. "I... know."

"Quit acting like this, Kate, I don't know how to deal with it," Nathan said, frowning briefly before he turned his face up to the cloudy sky.

"Emotional girls not a turn-on then?" Kate wondered, honestly trying for a lighter tone now, eyes still on the sky. "Shame."

Rolling his eyes, Nathan lit his cigarette and shook his head. "You trying to turn me on? I thought you had a boyfriend now. Love of your very young life or something."

"I don't use terms like that," she replied mildly. "Love of my life, I mean. But yes, I do have a boyfriend. It was a joke. I'm trying."

"Yeah, don't worry about it or me," Nathan said, snickering down at his lap quietly. "Though honestly, I think you'll be the only one doing that. You'll have to keep my memory alive."

He was being melodramatic and he knew it but he couldn't stop it either.

"It's not like you're dying, Nathan," Kate replied immediately, with another eyeroll. "Or like no one else is gonna notice you're not here. You make an impression, even if generally it might not be a good one."

"I could be dying!"

No, he'd be dead in a few weeks. Spoilers, though!

"What if I had some tropical disease and was just trying to spare everyone the thought of me dying here?"

Kate snorted and glanced over at him. "You're not considerate enough for that. Come on, remember who you're talking to."

"True." He shrugged a shoulder. "You can come visit me in England, if you want. I'm sure I'll be able to put you up in smashing accomodotions and give you dinners of KitKats and chicken nuggets. That's obviously the dream, Kate."

"Mm, that and the constant bad weather." She was teasing; she'd been in Bristol enough to know it really wasn't all that bad. "But what if I want fish and chips instead of chicken nuggets?"

"Well, that's simple, Kate," Nathan said, leaning forward on his knees. "You count out the Euros and pay the nice man or woman, equal opportunity, and they will give you the food and then you have your fish and chips. Got it?"

Kate pretended to be awed by this new revelation. "Thank you, I feel so enlightened now. Does that work with getting a soda too?"

"I think it does!" Nathan said, eyes wide. "Now, when you put your new knowledge to good use, you just remember who educated so thoroughly, yeah? I'd hate to be forgotten."

"And you won't be," she replied, still lacking in sincerity just to keep the tone she'd set. "Though, I have to say, I've already had to deal with some pretty tricky purchases in Bristol, and I had to figure those out all on my own, so I think this might pale in comparison a bit."

"You're making me feel so second class here, Kate!" Nathan protested, flopping back against his chair. "Aren't you supposed to be sucking up to the bloke that's leaving?"

"Why?" Kate wondered. "Aren't you supposed to suck up to people you can actually get something from instead of the ones that are fucking off?"
