Marshall had a sheaf of printouts with him, a collection of pages on proper exercise and stretching that he'd printed out from a link sent to him by Corrine after he'd emailed her to ask her to ask Vaughn to check his email, since he hadn't gotten a response from Vaughn and figured that he probably just wasn't, y'know, as obsessive about checking it as Lucas Corrine some people he knew.

So, y'know, stretching. Between Outdoor Fitness on Mondays and Zombies on Wednesday -- and the homework for Zombies, ugh -- Marshall figured he might as well do things right, so he was trying to follow along with the print-outs as he stretched in preparation for a run. 'Trying' should be stressed; it's not like he had all that much experience, after all.

Please, someone come and help him. Or point and laugh; that works, too.

"I see someone is trying to get straight A's in zombie class," Peter said. He'd stepped out onto the deck about a minute ago to catch some air, and-- well. It wasn't like he remembered Marshall's name from introductions, but he recognised the face.

And he was still hoping to make some connections with important people who didn't associate with his time-displaced little brother.

"And Outdoor Fitness," Marshall replied, making a face. The words were, in Marshall's mouth, almost a curse.

The guy definitely looked familiar... "... Peter, right? Or Pete? You're in Attitude with me, too, I think?"

"Peter," Peter corrected, conversationally. He nodded. "Yes. With that loud-mouthed sadist. Though that covers a great deal of the faculty..."

Hey, shared pain over teachers was an excellent way to convince people you were 'bonding' with them.

Marshall nodded. "I thought the teachers at my last school were bad, but at least there the principal was only part of a conspiracy, not trying to kill us with zombies."

Yeah. He'd be a little while getting past that.

"How is it that no one has gotten this place closed down?" Peter wondered. "I'm sure some government agency probably frowns on 'students eaten by zombies'."

Now he just needed to figure out if this guy was going to be useful.

Marshall gave up on the stretches for the moment -- it's not like he actually knew if he was doing them properly anyway -- and stood up. "You're assuming the government even cares. The right corporation pays them off... Oh, great, I'm starting to sound like Lucas. Anyway, my point is that a lot of stuff can happen at a school, and as long as the right people keep their mouths shut at the right times, or do what they can to have things look all right whenever anyone comes to look at things..."

To be fair, Marshall had just as much experience keeping things hidden; it's not like the government would have done anything other than bungle what was going on at Blake Holsey. Not that Marshall had any opinions about the Canadian government.

Peter raised a brow. Okay-- maybe he would be useful - or maybe he was just another crackpot conspiracy nut, like there were millions on the nets if you dipped even a centimeter under the surface. "Does that mean you've been to a place like this before?" he asked, all fake wide-eyed curiosity.

There were just new faces popping up everywhere. For a small island, Sam was pretty sure he hadn't seen the same person more than twice since the picnic.

"I feel like I should ask if you're a new kid since that's the question I've gotten about ten times already," Sam joked, giving Peter a little salute. "But, I won't because I have no idea if you're new or not."

"Yes, I'm a new kid," Peter said, and narrowly bit down on a in a matter of speaking. He didn't exactly want to go into his so-called alternate family right now - the very thought of it made him feel sympathy for Valentine's firebug tendencies. "And so are you, if I'm reading that right. Hey. I'm Peter Wiggin."

He offered a hand.

"Sam LaCroix," he said, taking the offered hand and giving it a shake. "And yep, I'm a new kid. I've been contemplating getting it tattooed on my forehead. But, I'd lose all conversation material so there'd just be awkward silences all around. Nice to meet you, Peter."

"At least we can commiserate about being new," Peter suggested, dropping his hand after the shaking had ended. "And all the frustrating questions that status brings. Let me guess-- the next big favorite is 'so what are you taking', or maybe 'have you seen the vice principal in the pyjamas'?"

"I've gotten the first one a couple times but the second one, not so much," Sam replied, shrugging. "And I haven't gotten 'what's your sign?' at all which is good, I guess."

The mention of the vice principal in pajamas sounded too amusing not to seek out at some point. Ramon would love a picture of that. "So, in answer to those very important questions, I got myself into a class on outdoor activities which is basically the professor's excuse to run us ragged and a class on trying not to die. Helpful, really. And no, haven't seen the pajamas wearing vice principal. Bet he's a scream, though."

"Haven't talked to him, just seen him," Peter said, easily, "But he definitely looks like a big scream, yeah."

Or psychopath calls to psychopath...

He jabbed his thumb over at Marshall. "He mentioned the exercise class," he said. "At least you didn't get the one with the zombies. I think these people watch too many vids."

As Sam was passing by, he glanced over at the deck and spotted the familiar kid doing what looked like stretches. After a minute more, he realized the familiarity came because they were in the same brutal class on Mondays.

"Prepping for a marathon?" he asked idly as he climbed up onto the deck. "Or something less heart attack causing than that?"

Marshall couldn't help but laugh a little. "That depends," he said, "on whether or not a PE class and a class about the zombie apocalypse are more or less heart-attack inducing than a marathon. I definitely felt like my heart stopped in the zombie one."

Give him a minute, Sam. He'll recognise you soon enough. Although your name may be harder to come by; he was focusing on more important things -- like breathing -- during introductions.

And now Sam was focusing on something other than the whole stretching thing Marshall was doing right in front of him. At the word 'zombies', Sam's eyebrows had shot up before he managed to control that immediate reaction.

"There's a class about the zombie apocalypse?" How had he missed that one? Granted, he probably would have had an unfair advantage but still. "The zombies real or just actors in zombie makeup?"

Shaking his head, Marshall explained, "They've got some kind of crazy holograhic classroom thing. The 'Danger Shop.'" Which, really, Marshall would love to examine in more detail when not getting attacked by zombies, fake or otherwise. "So they're not real, but they're a lot more convincing than actors. The teacher's got these, like, rules. For surviving. Rule number one is cardio."

"Well." Wow. Sam almost regretted missing that even if the zombies apparently weren't real. He wondered if his ability to control zombies would transfer over to something like that.

"You got an interest in zombies or something?" he asked curiously. "Or just accidentally dropped into the class without your knowledge?"

It seemed to be happening a lot this week.

"Kinda the second one. My parents signed me up for all of my classes before even telling me I was coming." Like, a week before the welcome picnic. "I think they figured it was some kinda theory class? Which would be awesome. Instead, I spent the entire class running from zombies and trying to hit them with a golf club."

He even got a couple of (lucky) good hits in!

Mercy wandered out onto the deck to get some sun. "Hey Marshall," she said with a smile.

"Mercy! Hi!" Marshall smiled back. "How's your first week been?"

"Surpisingly good, despite the fact that someone thought it would be funny to sign me up for the two Monday fitness classes," she said with a grin. "How about you?"

"Just the one on Mondays, thankfully," Marshall said. "I still don't know what my parents were thinking."

"Unfortunately I have an idea what these guys were thinking," she said with a rueful grin.
