NKOTB Living Room, Wednesday Evening

Topher had decided that he was not going to go outside anymore. Outside were bugs, hot weather, and... the Wild West. Nope, he was going to stay inside for now.

So in the cabin common room he was, going mildly insane because the channel just wouldn't change from what Topher was pretty sure was a horror movie. (It so wasn't.) All he wanted to do was watch something decent, and for a guy with as much technical know-how as Topher, the fact that the TV wouldn't change? Kind of maddening.

Alexander was glad to return to the cabin after not only a long day at the shop, but another long day at the room in the doors cleaning things up some more. It was incredible, really. Spend your whole life as a slave doing nothing but cleaning, and then a handful of years as a prince, and it feels like it's all gone.

He drifted into the living room of the cabin and dropped into a chair without even paying much attention to anything for a moment before looking up toward the television and asking, "What are we watching?"

"I don't know," Topher wailed, sounding truly pathetic. "The remote doesn't work and it won't let me change the channel manually and -- "

Oh, god, that was scary.

" -- girls keep taking their shirts off in it."

He wasn't pleased, no.

Some might not have considered Alexander's response to be a very manly one, but it was certainly a gentlemanly one. He gave a groan, closing his eyes as his head tilted back. "And the channel truly won't change?" he asked. "No chances of just switching it off and reading a book?"

"It won't even turn off," Topher wailed. "And I went to just leave the room, but I can still hear it from everywhere in the cabin."

A truly impressive display of maturity.

That quirked one of Alexander's eyebrows and he lifted his head to glance over at Topher. "Everywhere?" he asked.

The walls were thin! And some areas didn't even have walls! It was horrible.

"Everywhere," he said seriously, eyes wide and horrified.

Alexander considered this for a long moment.

"Well," he reasoned, "I suppose at least it's a lovely night out tonight, if it comes to that. And the film can only run for so long, unless now I've just cursed us to be exposed to it in an endless loop."

At that, Topher had no choice but to facepalm. Because of course Alexander was right and the movie would play forever.

"Thanks a lot, man," he said, his head collapsing back against the back of the couch. It was going to be a long night.

"My apologies," Alexander offered, and her grin did seem to request some sort of sympathy for the observations. "This does seem to solidify why my preferences lie heavily in books for this sort of thing."

Wait, what?

"...What sort of thing?"

Alexander waved an idle, tired hand at the television. "Entertainment. They just seem far more engaging and imaginative, and, with the exception of some of the more rambunctious books in the library, when you close one, you generally get to stop reading it."

Oh, yuck. He was one of those.

"This isn't entertaining," Topher pointed out, as another line of girls on screen lifted up their bikini tops. Lovely.

"All I wanted to do was watch the otter documentary," he concluded sadly.

Alexander tried to close his eyes, but not quickly enough, and part of him, despite not wanting to look, felt curious for a second, but then firmly tilted his head away as soon as he thought of what Cassima might have thought about him perusing the young ladies' bared chests.

"I find the televisions around here are extremely unreliable in that respect," he offered.

Richie had been heading out with a vague idea of maybe sitting by a campfire and eating some s'mores (that was what people did while camping, wasn't it? He wasn't exactly an expert). But look, a movie. That was easier than starting a fire, definitely.

"Any good?" he asked, nodding at the screen.

By now some of the initial insanity the movie had prompted in Topher had died down to a dull, bitter resignation.

"Not at all, my friend," he told Richie sadly. "Not at all."

"Nothing else on?" Richie wondered, innocently unaware of the tv's refusal to change channels. "You can always try just making fun of it. Sometimes that helps."

Topher was far too enraged at the television to make fun of anything it spewed out, thank you very much.

But...

"Yeah, I guess," he conceded tiredly.

"Not even worth making fun of?" That sounded pretty dire. "You could always, uh, turn it off? What's so bad about it?" It just looked kind of stupid to him, but kind of stupid could be fun.

"Try turning it off," Topher offered boredly, waving a hand toward the TV. "Go on."

Richie had seen a few weird things since he'd gotten here (the island was moving around, if nothing else) and that sounded suspiciously like a set-up.

"What, is it possessed or something?"

Possession? The island was crazy, but it couldn't be that crazy... right? Topher eyed the TV in a whole new light, squinting at it skeptically.

"Not that I know of," he said after a long moment of scrutiny. "Stubborn, sure."

"I...didn't know TVs could be stubborn," Richie said. "Did you try hitting it?" That was his go-to electronics troubleshooting method.

Topher looked appalled.

"No!" he spluttered. "I'm not about to hit -- I mean -- it's a perfectly good piece of equipment!"

Even though it hated him.

"Dude, you're not gonna break it by hitting it once. Unless you use a brick or something. Or you're like, superstrong or whatever. You're not, are you?" He certainly didn't look it, but this place was crazy.

He was the furthest thing from superstrong, Richie. The FURTHEST thing.

"No, but -- I mean, come on, you don't just hit perfectly good technology..."

In Topher World, tech was higher than people.
