Main Campfire | Afternoon | Sunday | June 12

Nathan wasn't smoking today. Nathan wasn't drinking or rolling a joint or doing anything illegal that would have gotten him arrested if he didn't live on an insane fucking island where crime seemed to be embraced or, at least, tolerated.

No, Nathan was standing up the lit campfire (it might have been too warm for that but what the hell, he wanted to use his lighter for something) and texting back and forth with Alisha. Why Alisha, he didn't know but she'd been the one who returned his first text.

Of course, the subject of their conversation wasn't very, well, normal. Proving that Alisha really didn't think of Nathan as a friend, she was actually texting him with challenges of jumping into the fire and testing out how long he could last if he avoided the whole stop, drop and roll thing. Nathan kept threatening to take that dare but man, that fire looked really fucking hot.

And then Alisha was calling him names, questioning his masculinity and telling him she was going to tell everyone else that he couldn't even stand a little heat. Nathan wondered what he'd get if he did take the dare, Alisha said she'd let him touch her and go with it and now Nathan was...still staring at the fire.

It just looked really fucking hot.

[Campfire's open and no, he is not going into the fire, I promise. Way too hot.]

"If that's what you're into, I guess." It didn't sound like it, and her dry tone might've implied she thought as much. "But I'm guessing not."

"Relax. It's not like I'm taking her side."

No, she didn't really feel kissing it better. "You don't seem relaxed. You seem pissy," she remarked. "And I like a little more enthusiasm than 'suppose I'll give you a shot'."

A year or so with Alex and the appearance of feelings might've made her a little more discerning about these things. Almost a miracle.

"Because that's a great idea." Sarcasm, that was definitely sarcasm. "How did I not think of that?"

"You don't want to put yourself in my hands." Bad plan, Nathan, bad plan.

Effy leaned back against her log and picked at a few twigs and bits of bark on the ground to throw at the fire. "Not got much of a caring instinct."

Possibly, for anyone else. Effy seemed to be making not telling people her name a bit of a habit.

"Do I really seem that bad?" Come on. Even at her worst she wasn't evil. "I might drag you out and yell a bit." She just wouldn't have a clue what to do aside from put him out.

"Might be worth not chucking yourself in there in the first place." Just a suggestion. "Sounds uncomfortable."

Besides, Effy had enough trauma to keep her in therapy for the rest of her life. No need to add to it.

"Can't just take a picture?" she asked, smirking. "Put a quid next to for comparison."

Effy paused in her little game tossing things at the flames to look across at Nathan.

"And they say men are pussies about pain." Yet here he was, contemplating it to prove a point. 'They' also said she was mental. If he was honestly considering this, she'd say that was a term better applied to him right now.

Effy looked him over a moment longer. "How lovely." Still full of sarcasm. She just couldn't help herself.

"What if there's, like, a limit on number of times or something?"
