Second Floor Common Room [Evening]

Ramona had flung herself onto a couch in the common room, in the interest of actually being social. Now, granted, while she had the television tuned to reruns of Rescued by the Alarm -- because who didn't love reliving the early nineties? Such large phones! -- she did have her nose buried in a book as she kept half an ear on the TV.

Look, the last Barry Plodder movie was coming out in a matter of like, a week, and while she wasn't a super-fan or anything, she had to try and remember exactly what happened when those kids weren't just walking around in the woods all the time. That was all they seemed to do for like, half that book. So she was refreshing herself on the events that took place in the latter half of the book, because she didn't want to be caught off-guard again like she had when she saw the last movie and that cute goblin thing had bit it.

"It's called nostalgia," she said, glancing up. "Look at the colors. Oh, the nineties."

"Is it still nostalgia if I was there two months ago?" Toby wondered.

Well. That got her attention. Ramona actually gave him her full attention then. "Really? Like, full-on early-nineties hilariousness was your life two months ago?"

"Oh yes," Toby said, straightfaced. "Like this one time, I got nominated for Homecoming King? ...And then I got a zit like, the day after. It was tragic."

That actually got a real smile. "Tragic, huh? Was your band involved in any way? And do you have a giant cell phone?"

"Yep," Toby nodded. "There was some hilarious comic misunderstanding that almost ended our music careers, but they came through for me in the end." He gave an exaggerated sigh. "No cell phone, though. Sorry to disappoint."

"Man, the cell phone was my favorite part," Ramona sighed. "I mean, way to tempt me with stories of an era I never really got to experience, only to yank my dreams away."

"Nobody ever seemed to buy my arguments for totally needing a cell phone," Toby mock complained. "A real bummer."

"You could get one now, but I wouldn't want our future technology to confuse you," Ramona offered.

"I've been thinking about it," he admitted. "I think I could probably handle it. Though first I've gotta find someone willing to hire me at some sort of job, I guess." Because there were really only so many times you could go out and pull the guess-your-weight trick. Although now that they were next to someplace where people spoke English again... did the Fandom bank exchange old-timey money, he wondered?

"Can't be that hard," Ramona offered. "I know way too many dumbasses who are gainfully employed here."

"Good to know I'm at least on par with dumbasses in your eyes," Toby noted with a smirk.

"It's literally the very least I can grant you," she said with a smile.

"So does that mean I could use you as a reference?" Toby asked.

"I'm not sure how, given you don't have my name or any of my information...." she said, tapping her chin.

"I know plenty about you!" Toby protested. "First of all- green hair. It's a small town, there can't be too many girls with green hair around. Second-," he tilted his head, trying to get a better look at the cover of the book she was reading, "you read fantasy novels. Third, you enjoy watching ridiculous teen drama television," he finished with a flourish.

"You forgot to mention my devastating beauty," Ramona pointed out.

"I was working up to that," Toby insisted. "Only I would've used the word 'captivating'."

"Well done," Ramona said with a little nod. "I change my hair a lot, though, so the green won't be a solid enough cue for anyone. You might actually need my name."

"You make a good point," Toby admitted. "So are you willing to share that particular tidbit of information?"

"Ramona Flowers," she said, holding out a hand. "And that's my real name and everything."

Well, she had one up over Toby in that department. Not that he had any idea his name wasn't actually Toby Logan. "Toby Logan," he replied. He wasn't quite suave enough to pull off anything like hand-kissing without looking like a tool, so he just went for a standard handshake. "And there you go. We're well on the way to becoming good friends now."

"I hear that's the first step, yeah," Ramona agreed with a smile. "And I give great references. I'll tell a story about that time you wrestled a bear." She nodded convincingly.

"Which was totally one of my finer moments and thus, the sort of thing a prospective employer would love to hear about me," Toby said with a nod.
