It felt like a long time since Nathan had made it up to the roof. He'd taken to smoking in his room, smoking on the way to class or even smoking outside the bar but the roof had been ignored until today. It was a nice enough day, not too rainy like it had been bloody Japan and not hot enough to give him a fucking sunburn so it was the perfect day to pollute the air.

Nathan had lit his cigarette before the door to the roof had been shut behind him and was nearly halfway through it when he hopped up to sit on the roof's ledge so he could look out across the small, strange island. For a second, he thought about jumping just to give people a right scare on a quiet afternoon but the thought of all that pain put him off.

Maybe he'd jump tomorrow. Hell, maybe he'd even land on his feet. That'd be fucking swell.

"Been there, done that," she smirked. "I like sticking with nature. It'd be like if you tried straightening out that curly rug of yours. Desperately uncomfortable and begging for reprieve."

"Wait, you've...actually had red hair before?" Nathan asked, almost surprised. "When was this? I wanna see pictures!"

Caroline laughed. "Oh hell no. You so do not get to see pictures from that era." Possibly because they'd all been destroyed.

"Unfair!" Nathan protested, frowning. "Why'd you have red hair anyway? Were gingers a thing over here?"

"Ew, when you say ginger, I think like, Annie levels of orange-red," she answered, a little grossed out by the idea. "I was more like a near-burgundy red-head. I did it for the drama, obviously. And because my mother told me not to."

"You should listen to your mother more," Nathan chided not at all seriously. "You never know when she might get tired of you and change the locks so you've gotta live fucking elsewhere."

"Dude, CPS would be on her ass so fast..." And then Caroline remembered she was technically eighteen now and no one would care. "Or something, right?"

"Maybe?" Nathan shrugged. "All I know is that my mum did that to me and I was the fucking bad guy!"

So he treated Jeremy like shit. So what? Jeremy was a fucking dog at night!

"Your mum's a cop though. I bet she could get away with it easier than other people."

"Yeah, probably," she agreed. "I guess there comes a point where you do what your mom says or you deal with trying to not live in a shelter or with friends." She supposed if that happened to her Stefan and Damon would let her in, but ugh, creepy.

"Your mum doesn't have a boyfriend or anything, right?" Nathan asked, recalling that from previous conversations. "That's what got me in trouble. I allegedly treated Jeremy badly. What my mum doesn't understand is that I was just trying to look out for her. Jeremy thinks he's a fucking dog now. Come on."

"Jeremy of the ugly sweaters is a dog? Well, I could think of worse things," she supposed, not actually minding dogs so much. "So you insulted him to her face and thought she'd take your side even though he's the one keeping her uh, happy so to speak?"

"Well." Nathan hedged a bit. "And maybe I punched him. But it was just the fucking once and he was acting like he didn't even know what the fuck I was talking about with the dog shit!"

"Nathan," Caroline tsked at him and shook her head. "See, I was considering feeling sorry for you but come on, hitting the guy? Never a winning choice from what I know about moms."

"Well, don't worry, my mum hit me in retaliation," Nathan shared, rubbing his cheek. "She hits harder than you, just so you know, and she's not even a vampire."

Well now Caroline was outright frowning. "She so does not hit harder than me! I've never hit you at like, full force...though I could if you wanted. Might break your face, though."

"Hey, my face is not your punching bag!" Nathan had no doubt that she could probably crack his skull in two with one carefully place fist. "You need to find better ways to work out your aggression. I'd suggest punching twats. I could point one or two out for you, if you want. It could be like a teamwork thing! I get the laughs at seeing cunts punched and you get to punch people!"

"I do have a little pent up aggression," she agreed, though it was doubtful that punching random people would help that. "Which people would you point me at if I said I'd hit anyone?"

"Let's see, let's see." Nathan rubbed his hands together and looked over the island like those twats were out there right now.

"Oh, Cara! You could punch Cara! She was the fucking person who told me she was a bank and then kicked me in the stomach." Nathan was gonna leave out a lot of the story.

"She told you she was a bank? What, did you try to make a monetary withdrawal from her naughty bits or something?" Caroline wondered how that story worked at all.

"Fuck no!" He shook his head. "The island was having a laugh and it made Kate a fucking vampire and Cara a fucking bank. She came to my door and was trying to tell me about interest rates and shit. I thought she was a whore, of course."

"Oh, so then she kicked your ass for the assumption?" Caroline finished up for him.

"Hey, it was a natural assumption!" Nathan protested, shaking his head. "She was asking me to give her money for services! What the fuck was I supposed to think?"

"Since when to banks give people money for services? I thought they gave money for like, your soul and more money later." Even if services would be a whole lot better.

"I don't know!" Nathan said, shrugging. "She was just a bad fucking bank who got mad when I assumed she wanted sex. Like I was the first one to assume that. Anyway, she needs to be decked. Hard."

"Hmm, I'd consider it," Caroline nodded. "You think she'd cry? I don't know if I could deal with that."
