Garage - Afternoon

The garage had been somewhat dusty when Jake had taken his present down to it, but he'd freed up a corner in the garage and had gotten a tarp down for him to work on. Getting the motorbike's frame together had gone pretty smoothly and the bike stood happily on its center stand as Jake worked on getting the engine together. There was a lot of cleaning involved and oiling things up and fitting it all back together, but it was a fun job and Jake had missed getting to tinker on engines.

He'd almost missed it enough to take his time to finish up, but then he was kind of eager to see if he could get the bike to work and take Caroline for a spin. She was still crazy for getting him this, but he really couldn't hold it against her.

A whole week off of classes meant Caroline was seriously regretting giving Jake that bike when he seemed to really enjoy spending all of his free time with it. So obviously, when she was feeling a little on the bored side of things, she wandered downstairs and leaned in the doorway.

Silence reigned for a moment until she sighed.

Jake tried not to laugh, his attention on the pieces in front of him. He knew how this was going to work. "I heard you come down, babe."

Oh right, because ignoring her was totally the best way to reply. "So? I heard you playing with metal parts. And still, here I am."

"Uh huh. My girlfriend got me this awesome bike," he told her, putting the pieces down before he turned his attention to her.

"Oh right, because your girlfriend rocks," Caroline replied, smirking as she surveyed the dusty old garage. "Why do you work on it down here? Are you afraid people will see?"

"Because it's the garage and I'd hate to lose any of the pieces moving them around constantly," he replied, tilting his head as he took in just how much leg she was showing off.

What, was she supposed to wear long pants in the summer? Shorts were somewhat appropriate if she was going to manage to drag him away.

"But it's so dirty here," she complained, wrinkling her nose as she looked around. "...are your fingers all black with oil?"

He laughed and held up his hands for her to inspect. "It kind of comes with the territory, babe," he pointed out.

Her nose was just going to stay crinkled as she moved over to join him, taking a seat on what she hoped was a clean portion of tarp beside him. "You're so going to need a shower before doing anything else, huh?"

"Only if you're afraid of a little oil," he teased, reaching out to try and smear her cheek. She'd look cute with a little dirty on her face!

Caroline disagreed, trying to block his hand, which only caused her to end up with grease smeared on her hand and cheek. "Hey! You're not supposed to do that!"

"I'm not?" he asked innocently, beaming at her. "You look all cute, like a proper greasemonkey girlfriend."

"Says the greasemonkey," she sighed at him, lifting her chin. "So what are you doing anyway? Other than trying to get me all gross."

Mercy was wandering around looking for garage/mechanic like places, because, hello, budding mechanic here. "Oh, that's amazing!"

The footsteps had been different enough not to be Caroline and Jake glanced up as Mercy entered the garage. "I am pretty amazing," he agreed, grinning at her.

Mercy laughed. "Yeah, yeah, whatever, you're amazing. But that bike. Wow."

"Nice, huh?" Jake was beaming widely and giving the bike an affectionate look. "A Triumph 1958. Caroline got it for me. Can you believe that? It's kind of insane and awesome at the same time."

"Wow, yeah," Mercy said, walking around it to get a good look. "She's something else. Caroline and the bike, I mean."

"I kind of freaked at first," he admitted. "Cause it's an expensive gift, but she means it and god, they're both hard to say no to."

Sorry, Mercy, he was just going to gush now.

If somebody gave her a gift like that, she'd be gushing too.

"You're a lucky guy, Jake," she said with a smile. "Not only is your girlfriend really nice, she's got great taste."

"I am," he agreed instantly. "She called in the cavalry to help her pick, but it's pretty amazing either way. I can't wait to get this baby fixed up and take her for a spin."

"Nothing wrong with calling in the cavalry," Mercy said. "Smart even."

She finished her walk around of the motorcycle and smiled up at him. "I know a lot more about cars than bikes, but this is an amazing one, Jake."

Jake nodded. "Cars are more of my usual mojo, but I've fixed up bikes before so I'll manage. It's nice having someone to work on again, I haven't since I've gotten here." And somehow that just made the gift even more awesome.

"Yeah, I used to help out in the shop back -" She stopped herself. She had to stop thinking of it as home since it never would be again. "Back in Aspen Creek. Charles got me started after I crashed Bran's Porsche into a tree."

Stole it then drove it in an ice storm into a tree, but hey, details, right?

"Ouch," Jake said sympathetically. "Instantly picked the Porsche to crash, huh? I didn't know you liked cars."
