Bruce made his way over to the common room, curious to see if there would be any change in the television's treatment of him as part of his final year on the island. He turned it on only to find...

Football. Plain, simple, American football.

"Preseason football?" Bruce asked himself. "That's even more pointless than what I usually get." Bruce was apparently not a fan of exhibition games. He was so focused on his standard television challenge that he barely realized there was cake on the coffee table with a sign next to it saying, "Free cake."

As such, he didn't know where it came from. But he wasn't going to try it, just in case it was a trap.

"Jims is asleep, at least for the next few hours," Rilla exclaimed, collapsing on the nearest sofa. "Oh, cake!"

"You sound excited," Bruce said. "Just to warn you, the cake was here when I got here. I'm not sure where it came from."

"Cake fairies?" Rilla offered hopefully, taking a bit.

"I wish I could say 'that's silly' and dismiss it," Bruce said. "But around here, that's as good an explanation as anything. Who knows, they could have left it for your benefit."

"In that case, they could have made some tea, too," Rilla fake-complained, smiling. "Would you like a cup?"

"Please," Bruce said. "You do have practice making it, right?"

"Loads, especially after the August we've had at home. No one's been sleeping very well," Rilla said. "With cream and sugar, lemon or black?"

"Lemon, please," Bruce said. "Did you get to practice your baking, too? And don't take that as criticism. You came a long way last year."

"Not as much," Rilla said. "When Susan gets worried, she bangs around in the kitchen and doesn't like to be disturbed. But I'm glad I've gotten better--it means I can send boxes to Jem and Jerry."

As there was someone making Ozma-knows-what in her own floor's common room, Elphaba had gone up a flight of stairs to this one.

"...Free cake?" she said, thinking it looked rather tasty. Of course, she probably couldn't have any.

"Don't know where it came from, but apparently," Bruce said. "Unless it's some kind of bizarre trick. That doesn't seem to be the case, though."

"It does seem odd someone would leave a cake unattended," Elphaba said. "Almost as if it were... bait, but that's just me being dramatic, I think. Are you well, Bruce?"

"I am so far. Unless the cake gets to me," Bruce said. Yes, he had some after Rilla proved it to be safe. "But otherwise, I'm happy to be getting back to actual classes. What about you?"

"The same, actually," Elphaba said. "Since I'm not exactly a social butterfly, I prefer to be occupied with classes. Taking anything interesting this term?"

"If it weren't interesting to me, I wouldn't be taking it," Bruce remarked. "Basic Strategy, Tricks Cons and Bamboozles, and Fighting for Funsies. I figure the first two will help in the business world."

"But not the last one?" Elphaba said, amused. "I'd think it would almost be more useful."

"Strangely, things don't go well when you kick a rival CEO in the face," Bruce said. "Even if it might make you feel good."

"Sweet, free cake!" Petra said from the common room doorway. "Add one thing to the plus column for this place."

"It's definitely a Fandom perk," Bruce said. "You never know where food will turn up."

Well, usually in a common room or falling from the sky. Bruce didn't think Petra would believe that second one yet, though.

Bruce, Petra remembered, was one of the moderately sane ones. "Did you make it? Or buy it?" she asked. "And where would I find a plate?" She pointed to an area that looked likely and guessed, "Kitchen?"

"Kitchen," Bruce confirmed. "And the cake was here when I walked in. It tastes like something from J,GoB, though, so I'm assuming bought."

He was only 60% sure, though. He wasn't an expert on baked goods.

"J,GoB?" Petra called from the kitchen. She emerged with plate and fork after some rummaging through cabinets and asked, "What the heck is that?"

"Jeff, God of Biscuits," Bruce said. "It's the bakery in town. As far as I know, nobody's claimed that it's an actual god."

"...the pony mentioned that." Petra was more and more beginning to get the impression she hadn't hallucinated the pony, though how that was possible, she had no idea.

"That makes sense. She enjoys baked goods," Bruce mused. "In any event, the cake's pretty good." The pony would probably like it, too.
