Second Floor Common Room, Monday Morning

Natalie was pretty sure there had been sofas in the common room when she'd come in a few times over the weekend. Normal, common room-y sofas. She was pretty sure.

Right now, though? Nests. Just nests. This was probably part of that oh-so-wacky Fandom weirdness that she'd been hearing about, right?

So far, it wasn't really impressing her. It was more of an inconvenience than anything. Still, she went about making her oatmeal, and thanked whatever higher power happened to be at work on the island that a table and a few chairs had been spared from whatever this nest thing was supposed to be about.

She leafed through some random magazine while she had breakfast, and hoped nothing important had suffered from a transformation.

Jack entered the room, still in pajama pants and a t-shirt, and did a short walk around. "Not only the third floor," he declared. "I thought maybe it was a weird third floor hazing thing for the new kids."

"Nope," Natalie replied dryly, glancing up at the new arrival. "Unless it's some hazing thing all over the dorms."

In which case she was going to give it points for creativity.

"I could probably find out the truth, but I'd prefer breakfast. Is there any milk down here?"

Natalie shrugged. "I think I saw some in the fridge, but I don't know whose it is."

Which might have also had something to do with not yet knowing a whole lot of people in general.

"Pretty sure the milk belongs to whoever gets to it first." He headed to the fridge. No, it wasn't his floor, but there were enough people who came to his floor in search of food that he felt comfortable doing it. And yeah, he was under the impression that Kate had a new hairstyle and he hadn't noticed. He hadn't seen her in a really long time, okay? "Met any of the new kids?"

Sam had woken up in a nest and he was embarrassed to think that it'd taken him way too freaking long to figure out how to get out of that nest without hurting himself.

Eventually, he'd ended up just rolling out onto his feet and staring but after that, he'd made a quick exit from his nest laden room in case the nest meant he was about to turn into a freaking bird.

The common room down the hall seemed like a safe place but when he appeared in the doorway and saw more nests, he frowned.

"Did birds conquer the island overnight?" Sam asked, mussing his sleep tousled hair and blinking. It wasn't a great greeting but it was a greeting.

It was Monday morning. The fact that there was talking instead of random grunts of acknowledgement was greeting enough.

"If they did," Natalie replied, "they came and went and left their homes behind."

"I guess that's better than thinking I did this on my own while I was asleep," Sam replied, padding in to try and find some orange juice he'd shoved in the refrigerator awhile back.

"I don't think I wanna be ruled by birds anyway," he added offhandedly. "Too weird."

"Very feathery," Natalie drawled, poking at her oatmeal with the tip of her spoon. "Bad for people with allergies."

"I don't recognize you," Sam said after a moment spent downing his orange juice. That meant he wouldn't be mixing her up with Kate, at least. "I missed the welcome picnic too. The president called and needed my help."

That was a lie. He'd just been anti-social as hell lately. "How's the new kid shine doing?"

Jack thought about it for a moment. "If you see any eggs, worry."

Sam paused to actually think if he'd seen eggs anywhere around his room. He was pretty confident he hadn't which meant he could stop imagining laying an egg.

"If that happened, at least we'd have breakfast for awhile?" he joked, trying to find a spot that wasn't a nest to sit on. "Eggs are a pretty adaptable food."

Of course, eggs from a human might be different.

Jack grinned. "As long as they don't have anything in them that shouldn't be eaten, and I'm not even going to guess what might come up, I think we could make a killer omelet."

"Yeah but how would you know if there's something in there that shouldn't be eaten until you eat it?" Sam wondered. "If you take that first bite and your throat tightens up, you're pretty much screwed."

Cassel had gone down a floor just to see if he could find some place that was nest-free to eat breakfast. "Oh good it's not just my floor."

He didn't know why he thought the third floor would be the only one afflicted with nests, but he did there for a moment.

"No," Natalie confirmed again. As weird as it felt to say. "From what I hear, it's an equal opportunity thing for all floors."

"Good," Cassel said, heading towards the fridge. "I would have been pissed if it was just me."

Clearly if he was annoyed everybody else should be too.

Natalie was often an advocate of that way of thinking. However... "If it had been just you, at least you probably would've been able to find a place that didn't have nests."

"You do your best imitation of a bird this morning too?" Sam guessed since Cassel didn't look too surprised at the nests cluttering up the common room.

"Yep. Been pulling twigs out of my hair all morning," Cassel said with a nod. "I'm just grateful there wasn't a giant bird there trying to feed me puke."

"I hadn't even thought of that," Sam admitted, wincing. "I was more concerned that I'd turn into a bird if I stuck around my room. I got a little scared of laying an egg."

That would have been so so painful.

Freddie didn't have any classes today. So Freddie was wandering about, poking at his PearPad, and generally looking to find new people to talk to. And possibly rope into being on the show.

"Hey everybody," he said, wandering in. "If anyone wants leftover spaghetti tacos, there's some in the fridge two floors up."

Natalie gave him a faintly disgusted look for that suggestion. "No, thanks. That doesn't sound like a breakfast food."

But, this was coming from a girl eating oatmeal. She may have been a purist.

"They're delicious at all times and all occasions," Freddie replied with a smile. "Unless you've got a gluten or tomato allergy. And then you should probably stay away."

"I have neither," she replied, though less disgusted. "I just don't want tacos for breakfast."
