5th floor common room- Monday evening

Susan knew that this place was much different than her own world- it still felt strange to think of it that way but she supposed that was the best way to put it- and she was determined to adapt as quickly as possible. The most glaring differences were the technological ones, and so she'd started there.

She'd quickly decided that anyone who took longer than five seconds to deduce what a light switch was for and how to work it was an idiot. With that accomplished, she moved on to the common room, testing out whatever it was she didn't immediately recognize and see if she couldn't figure it out. To her surprise, it hadn't been difficult to work anything. It was almost as if she already knew how to turn these things on and make them go, which she knew was ridiculous. She'd never seen these devices before, so there was no way that she would know how to operate them, and therefore they just had to be simple to operate.
The only thing that was causing any trouble at all was the television. Susan knew that pushing the button would make it turn on, and she'd figured out that pushing these other buttons would make whatever was on the screen change. Of course, anyone coming into the room would find her doing so by standing next to the television and making the channels change that way. She was already deciding everything on this thing was drivel. There would never be any reason to learn to use the remote.

"I'm certainly glad to help fill that void, then!" Rosella said proudly, even though she knew it couldn't be any longer than a year. "It's certainly more preferable than spending yet another year at the castle back home."

Elphaba chuckled. "Well, I do hope you find this place as friendly as Alexander did. And I also hope you won't mind if I pester you on occasion for news of him."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
A bit of Rosella's smile faded, but she worked it up again, slightly. "Of course," she said. "And then I shall have to pester him about why he can't seem to be bothered to write to his friends more directly. I know he's King of the Land of the Green Isles, and everything, but that's hardly an excuse."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Elphaba noticed that, but didn't say anything quite yet. "But I think that's enough of him. I don't think we've really ever gotten the chance to be properly acquainted."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
There was almost something nervous and wary about that chuckle of Rosella's just then. "No, we haven't," she said, a bit tentatively, because she wasn't exactly sure she wanted to get properly acquainted with Elphaba. It was nothing against Alexander. But being raised by a tyrannical, murderous magician did rather stunt your social skills considerably, and so his choice in friends while he was here certainly wasn't...ideal. Over all. "There was an awful lot going on, what with the wedding and everything. Did you enjoy it? And how did you like the Land of the Green Isles over all? It seems a lovely kingdom, and I know it makes Alexander quite pleased to be with Cassima."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Elphaba noticed that as well, and it had her twisting her lips just a bit in apprehension. "Well, that whole ordeal, shipwreck aside, was rather excitingA proper adventure, like you read about in stories. And to help Alexander with something so important, well... that was an honor."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Drat. Rosella knew she couldn't truly dislike anyone who would say such a thing about her brother, but it would take more than that to shake her reservations.

"Adventure seems to follow my family around quite a bit," she admitted. "It will be good to know, though, that the Land of the Green Isles should be on the rise to prosperity, and anyone may visit whenever they want. And I'm sure he was quite honored to have you there to help him, as well, Elphaba."

See, she could be polite.

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
"That is very good of you to say," Elphaba said, smiling. The comment actually did help her relax a bit. "And here's hoping it is not the last adventure I experience before I return to Oz."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
And hopefully none of those adventures included kidnapping princes, or eating children, locking up people who were prettier than you, or flying monkeys...

...Ahem.

"Oz?" asked Rosella, her training serving her well in an attempt to make digging for information sound like being interested in knowing Elphaba companionably. "Is that the name of the land you are from? Oh, I realize now how little I seem to know about you, Elphaba, for all Alexander has mentioned you!"

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, the flying monkeys would wait until Elphie was back in Oz.

"I think we are in the same predicament, there," Elphaba said. "We've heard each other spoken of, but never really learned much actually about one another. But to answer your question, yes. Oz is the name of the land I am from."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"What's it like?" asked Rosella. "Is it much like this land? Or is it quite different?"

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, from this land, very different indeed," Elphaba said. "The technology here is far beyond that of even the Emerald City, our capital. I come from Munchkinland, specifically. But I'm not a Munchkin, as is evident. Or, well, would be if you knew what they were."

Elphaba chuckled a little. "It's a rural area. Lots of farms and fields. Scarecrows, talking Animals, all sorts of things."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Like much of Daventry itself," Rosella mused, "though perhaps not as many talking Animals. Those seem more prevelant in the other countries; you saw the guard dogs in Alexander's new home, and my father was once aided by a talking Owl."

Was that a faint shudder?

You'd shudder, too, if you'd met Cedric.

But the first part of Rosella's response seemed almost idle; her attention went into inquiring more. "But what is a Munchkin? You're from their land, though you're not one yourself?"

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"They're just like you or I, really," Elphaba said. "Only much, much shorter. They're a very... stout-hearted people. Sometimes a mite superstitious. But not really that different from people who are twice their height."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Green woman, with a tendency towards black, living with people of a different kind, particularly short. If fairies were brought into this conversation any time soon, the parallels to Tamir would be just that much more complete.

"They sound very similar, then, to our dwarves and gnomes."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose they might be," Elphaba said. "If it's my fortune, I've always wanted to take a group of friends to see Oz. Though it would probably be a little tricky to do so. But perhaps if Ozma wills it, I might take you to see for yourself."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Rosella was thinking that of course a witch would want to take a group of 'friends' into her territory; Rosella was also thinking that if she was inviting Rosella, then that witch also had a bit of a death wish.

Still, Rosella smiled. "I'm sure that would be quite the adventure! I should hope one would not find the sort of trouble Alexander found when he took all of you with him to the Land of the Green Isles, though, of course, with everyone's help, the bad guy was defeated and there was quite a happy ending."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"In reality, everyone else would have probably a much better time of travelling about Oz than I typically do," Elphaba said. "My skin is not as accepted, there, if I may be blunt."
