5th floor common room- Monday evening

Susan knew that this place was much different than her own world- it still felt strange to think of it that way but she supposed that was the best way to put it- and she was determined to adapt as quickly as possible. The most glaring differences were the technological ones, and so she'd started there.

She'd quickly decided that anyone who took longer than five seconds to deduce what a light switch was for and how to work it was an idiot. With that accomplished, she moved on to the common room, testing out whatever it was she didn't immediately recognize and see if she couldn't figure it out. To her surprise, it hadn't been difficult to work anything. It was almost as if she already knew how to turn these things on and make them go, which she knew was ridiculous. She'd never seen these devices before, so there was no way that she would know how to operate them, and therefore they just had to be simple to operate.
The only thing that was causing any trouble at all was the television. Susan knew that pushing the button would make it turn on, and she'd figured out that pushing these other buttons would make whatever was on the screen change. Of course, anyone coming into the room would find her doing so by standing next to the television and making the channels change that way. She was already deciding everything on this thing was drivel. There would never be any reason to learn to use the remote.

"If you were a vampire, you'd have, like, all of eternity, you could do whatever you want, and you'd spend it in high school macking on human girls? Or guys." Petra made a face. "I don't think so." Rosella still thought vampires were real. That was so adorable. Or sad. One of those.

"Well," Rosella reasoned, "if you had all of eternity, perhaps one would make a list of all the sorts of things one could do, just because you have all the time in the world so you may as well try everything."

"But hanging out with teenagers? Come on, Rosella, you have to admit that's totally sketchy," Petra argued. "Some two hundred year old guy and a sixteen-year-old girl? Ew!"

Rosella lifted her finger, then lowered it. Opened her mouth, then seemed to change her mind, and then tried it again.

"Hm," she said, looking a little stumped. "Maladicta was probably hundreds of years older than Alexander, but their relationship wasn't anything more than friendship, so that's a little less disturbing. I do see your point, though. I wouldn't want to be with someone two hundred years older than I was..."

She didn't exactly want to be with anyone, really, though the only one even remotely in the running was a fairy prince, so....

"Right? Totally creepy. I mean, my boyfriend's twenty, but we decided to take a break until I finish school. So I guess he's not really my boyfriend any more." This thought made Petra kind of sad, because Sinjin was hotness.

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"And how old are you?" Rosella asked. "Twenty years old is not old at all! Some of the princes Mother tries to flag as potential suitors are downright ancient. At least twenty five! Blech!"

"Sixteen and a half? But it looks weird, which is ridiculous because it's only illegal if you have sex and I'm not about to do that anyway." Not because she didn't want to have sex with Sinjin; she simply had come with the wrong equipment and hadn't gotten it switched out yet, but she didn't want to overshare with her new friend. Which thought made her realize she probably had just done that. "And wow, TMI, right? Sorry."

"Tee em eye?" asked Rosella, who had to laugh a little. "Oh, Petra. I believe it should take me ages until I can understand half of the things that you say, but it should be rather interesting discovering your manners of speech."

"Too much information?" Petra said. "I forget how much slang I use."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Too much information," Rosella repeated thoughtfully before the light went off in her head. "Oh! It's an abbreviation, taking the first letters. TMI."

She turned a smile toward Petra. "I like your slang. It's so different from what I'm used to."

"You catch on quickly!" Petra told her. "And I'm sure you'll pick up lots if you stay here for very long." Since they didn't appear to have much slang where Rosella was from, "Your mother will probably be appalled."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, believe me," Rosella laughed. "None of these words are going to ever cross the ears of my mother, if I can help it. Well, perhaps if I can use it to my advantage when she tries to pair me up with some boorish prince from who-knows-where."

"Most of the modern princes aren't that bad," Petra argued. "There's that one Swedish guy who's a total looker, but he's way too old for you. And Prince Harry..." Sigh.

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Rosella made a face. "Please don't let my mother know there are other princes here, too!" she said. "The last thing she needs is a wider selection to pester me with. I don't care if they're handsome or clever or anything. I'm not ready to get married."

"I don't think there are any princes here," or at least, she hadn't run into them yet. "But don't worry, I'm not about to go telling your mom anything. I don't even know her."
