Dorm Lobby, Saturday morning

After finishing up his radio broadcast, Dave made his way back to the dorms - with a detour for coffee, of course - and started to set up a table in the lobby. He had a couple dozen jars of various fruit jams that he made last night and a poster hung on the table reading:
Dave Nelson for Sophomore Class Representative
Great with jams
Better with student government

Free homemade jam for all sophomores!

He was now ready to buy votes with smashed up, jarred fruit. Who else could say that?

[OOC: Open lobby, naturally! Dave will probably give jam to non-sophomores, too if they promise to mention his generosity to sophomores.

Oh, and I'm dropping a tiny bit of OCD in here on the off chance that somebody else wants to campaign in the lobby. Dave's not a lobby hog.]

And also what on earth jam has to do with his campaign.

Natalie, with her takeaway cup of coffee and her little paper bag of goods from J,GoB, was not a sophomore. Nor did she have an interest in student politics – or, indeed, in starting unnecessary social interactions with too many people.

But she had to stop here, one eyebrow raised. "Jam?"

"Homemade," Dave said proudly. "Well, dorm-made. But that's close enough to count, eh, Kate?" No, he wasn't used to people looking like other people. Let it sink in for a moment.... "Wait, didn't you graduate?"

Dave would be very apologetic in a moment.

A flicker of annoyance crossed Natalie's face, but she was quick to get it under control, hidden beneath a mask of mildness. "You're thinking about the other girl with a face like this," she said. "I'm Natalie, I just got here last weekend."

"Oh! I'm so sorry," Dave said. "I'm still not used to people looking so much like other people... Want some jam?"

Well, it might not hurt to have jam. Even if she was pretty sure he was offering largely because he'd just mistaken her for someone everyone else was mistaking her for too.

It was most of the reason, yes. "I have grape, strawberry, blueberry, and mixed berry," Dave said. "And since elections are a couple weeks away, I'm happy to take suggestions for the future."

"I'm not really any kind of expert on jam," Natalie said. "And I'm a junior." So, not a potential vote for him. "Can I still get a blueberry one?"

"Sure. Think of it as a welcome to Fandom. And an apology for thinking you were someone else, since I'm sure you're getting that a lot," Dave said, grabbing a jar of the blueberry and handing it over. "But if you could mention this to any sophomore friends, I'd appreciate it."

Rilla had manhandled Jim's stroller (and the baby himself) down five flights of stairs and was now staring aghast at Dave's poster.

"You made jam?!"

She burnt jam. A lot.

"Yes. Is there a problem with that?" Dave asked, confused by the tone and the stroller and the baby. There was a lot there that he wasn't expecting.

Rilla would have flailed if she wasn't holding an infant. "But I haven't made anything yet and I certainly can't compete with jam! I burn jam!"

"Oh, you're running for Sophomore Representative?" Dave asked. "I'm sure you could make something other than jam. It's not exactly flying off the table yet."

Yes, he was going to be encouraging to the pretty shouting girl with the baby. Because that was still a lot of things to take in at once and, yell, that's how Dave dealt with things.

Rilla had been in Fandom long enough to pause and stare at the jam suspiciously, in case it was choosing to literally fly anywhere before regaining her composure somewhat. "Perhaps bread, to go with your jam?" she offered.

"I used to have aspirations of being able to bake bread, but they were deflated when the bread was," Dave joked. "I think it's mostly that there haven't been too many people wandering through the lobby so far this morning. I guess people are sleeping in or out of town for the holiday."

"It is a little early for people here," Rilla admitted. "Is it Labour Day here too?"

Bobby came down the stairs on his way out to run and was distracted by Dave's posters.

"What does jam have to do with government?" he asked curiously.

"For one thing, it shows that I'm willing to work hard to get a good final product," Dave said. "Are you a sophomore, by any chance?"

He nodded. "What's the final product you want? Because I'd think that making jam shows you can follow a recipe. Does student government have a recipe?"

"Just for the record, the jam is my own recipe," Dave pointed out. "So if what you're asking is can I put together some common ingredients in a precise way and get a final product that can inspires school spirit and community action, then yes, I think student government does have a recipe."

If he weren't, well, Bobby, there'd have been a snarky comment. But he was Bobby and so he simply thought about that.

"What do you see as the major priorities for this year?" he asked curiously, well-trained by years of being dragged by his mother to political meetings. "And how do you feel you can solve them?"

"It's student council. The main priorities are planning dances, fundraisers, and things to inspire school spirit," Dave said, chuckling a little at the serious nature of the question. "I'll probably solve them by suggesting things to do at dances, fundraisers, and some ideas for how to raise school spirit and hoping that the upperclassmen like my ideas."

Bobby bit his lip, wondering why both people he'd talked to about this had had the same answer. "Don't you think there should be more to being a leader in society than planning dances?"
