Fifth Floor Common Room [evening]

Rilla, after listening to the radio avidly for the last few days, had decided that the other candidates for Student Council had tapped out the baked goods bribery market, which was why she was seated at the table writing a series of very polite notes to the members of the sophomore class and tying blue (which were scary, but school colour-related!) and yellow carnations to each with a pair of blue and yellow ribbons.

Jims was snoozing in a wicker basket nearby, and pot of tea was waiting by the stove. She'd share with anyone who stopped in, but especially if you were a Soph.

"I'm completely kidding," Rilla assured her. "I'm fifteen and I barely do housework."

That's not much to brag about, Rilla.

"That'll take care of any accidental leading-by-example." Stephanie snapped her fingers. "I can't believe they let you bring a baby to school with you."

That was kind of cool, actually.

"I think Father must have pulled some strings," Rilla admitted, "but Jims really couldn't have stayed at home. My mother is too frail with my oldest brother heading for the front, and the advancement in medical care here was too much for my father to resist."

"I'm really impressed, actually," Stephanie admitted. "Not many kids around our age would be okay with taking on that much work."

Rilla blushed. "Many other people are doing so much more right now," she said. I'm only watching him until his father returns from the front."

". . . oh." Stephanie blinked. "I thought . . . oh god, never mind, the point is it's a lot of work and you're actually doing it."

Rilla stared at her for a moment. "Oh, he's not mine! His mother passed away."
